Priti Patel address

She seems cold and untrustworthy. Her speech is full of words such as ‘compassion’ but I feel she isn’t worthy of addressing the nation like this in view of how she’s behaved.

Two words for you

Esther McVey

ChilliMayo · 12/04/2020 06:26

BJ will have be available to watch the briefings live now, and let's hope he spends some time considering who deserves their place on the team and who doesn't.

Bluegem01 · 12/04/2020 06:29

It's always "I" when she speaks! "I" did this and "I" have been working so hard - she makes my blood boil and she seems so two faced.

The minimum she has to be is competent. If she were compassionate as well that would be a bonus. Unfortunately she is neither competent nor compassionate, but luckily for the government, she is a convenient scape goat. She can go out there now and repeatedly put her foot in her mouth, looking like she wouldn’t spit on her own grandmother if she were on fire. Then when Bojo comes out of hospital, looking vulnerable and being grateful to the NHS, and he asks who made this mess, everyone else can point at Priti while believing Bojo’s Damascan conversion to a defender of all things NHS.

I won’t feel sorry for her then, but anything that distracts from the government’s collective responsibility for this mess is a shame.

Egghead68 · 12/04/2020 08:12

She’s only in her job to appease the right wing of the Tory party.

She’s very ambitious but has no talent or humanity.

ivykaty44 · 12/04/2020 08:19

Patel was the only competent MP the Tory government had to speak yesterday...

cavabiensepasser · 12/04/2020 08:25

She has that 'dead behind the eyes' look that a certain, um, section of society often has. I do not trust her.

Viviennemary · 12/04/2020 08:56

She appears completely devoid of any human emotion. I hope she doesn't last long.

emilybrontescorsett · 12/04/2020 09:11

Let's be honest none of them give a shit.
Borris is conveniently hiding because he can't be trusted to say anything right can he. How convenient that when the shot but the fan he was dreadfully ill with covid 19. Hmmmmm.....truth is if he was usually upfront and led his party from the front , then I'd be more inclined to believe it.
However he has done the same as he did with the election campaign and the floods in the North of the country, nothng. Call me sceptical but I find it all fits a pattern . Cried wolf far too many times, never facing up to anything. Then the going gets tough and he becomes 'ill'.
Matt Handcock became a liability.
So Priti Patel was wheeled out.

I'm sick and tired of being told it's all our fault.
No I'm no longer buying that.
People are not dying because I go outside and stay miles away from everyone ,that's not true. I am clean and always have been hygenic.
People are dying because there is insufficient protection. Those working with the public have not been adequately protected.
I'm not taking the blame for that and the government are running out of gormless idiots to address the nation.

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2020 09:44

Good post Emily

greenlynx · 12/04/2020 09:48

OMG!!!!
Business secretary just said in Andrew Marr’s show : “We are sorry for the loss of any deaths.”

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 12/04/2020 09:55

The lack of PPE and now telling NHS staff to not change it means it the rate of hospital acquired infection will saw. Other germs haven't gone away just because Covid has arrived. There will be huge opportunity to cross contaminate between patients. Imagine having Covid and MRSA? Who will get the blame, or be left to deal with it? I wouldn't blame doctors and nurses for resigning en masse over this. They deserve to be protected and so do their patients and the government has to be left with no other option than to supply adequate amounts of PPE needed to provide safe care

Lumene · 12/04/2020 10:00

Priti Patel is as many have said neither competent nor a pleasant person.

She has been wheeled out because it was becoming too obvious that someone with her position was not being subjected to proper scrutiny.

She is basically like the Dougal character from Father Ted if he was also not a nice person.

TheReluctantCountess · 12/04/2020 10:31

@emilybrontescorsett you are right.

Booboostwo · 12/04/2020 10:39

Business secretary just said in Andrew Marr’s show : “We are sorry for the loss of any deaths.”

What an illiterate fool!

RishiSunakFanClub · 12/04/2020 11:28

I like Priti, she's a good Home Secretary and I honestly doubt if she gives a fuck what you think about her. Sticks and stones and all that.

DameXanaduBramble · 12/04/2020 11:53

She’s dreadful - what planet are you on, Rishifanclub?

Hermanhessescat · 12/04/2020 12:03

Spot on emily

ilovesushi · 12/04/2020 12:18

She's awful. Insincere, rude, lacking in basic empathy and humanity. Surprised not see much analysis of her speech today in online papers. Only mumsnetters dissecting it so far.

Agree with Emily - too much chastising the public to distract from indecisive, dangerous policies which prioritise economics over human cost, and reveal a weakened health system.

dontcallmelen · 12/04/2020 12:24

Emily yy you are right.

midsomermurderess · 12/04/2020 12:26

How can you conclude that she is a good Home Secretary when she has been in spot for so short a time before this happened, Rishi Fan Girl? What exactly is her track record here? You applaud her hard right, anti-immigrant stance, as of course is your right, but stop pretending she has actually achieved anything one can actually discern. That's just rampant sycophancy.

midsomermurderess · 12/04/2020 12:28

And please, please let's not go down the first name, like she's my pal, route with her. I can't believe e how many on here still do the "Boris' nonsense either.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/04/2020 12:29

Much as I didn't warm to her think about that not quite apology again.

All week, longer, male politicians have dodged the same demand, that they apologise for the lavknof PPE, they have not apologised, not said the word sorry. But the first woman asked felt the need to do so, even though it was badly phrased. What happened next?

The journalist immediately re phrased his question and asked her to confirm that she was sorry for the government having been personally responsible for the danger, the deaths, the heartache etc etc.

THAT is why nobody apologised previously, the journalist probably thought all his Christmases had come at once.

Think again... why was it a woman who couldn't brush off the demand to apologise?

Why did the journalist think his rephrasing was appropriate?

Why the fuck is there a thread dissecting a woman's way of speaking?

chipsandgin · 12/04/2020 12:32

I doubt she gives a shit about what we think too, mainly because she clearly lacks any self awareness or empathy (or basic maths skills, that was cringeworthy).

Unpleasant, cold and incompetent were what I took away from that appearance & that has nothing to do with her gender, race or even her questionable politics - I would say the same of anyone coming across as she did.

chipsandgin · 12/04/2020 12:32

Oh and unbearably smug too, which always puts my back up.
