She seems cold and untrustworthy. Her speech is full of words such as ‘compassion’ but I feel she isn’t worthy of addressing the nation like this in view of how she’s behaved.

OP posts:
midsomermurderess · 12/04/2020 12:35

It's not about her being a woman.

PerkingFaintly · 12/04/2020 12:40

Well, CuriousAboutSamphire.

There was a thread dissecting a man's way of speaking, when Paula Sherriff pleaded with Boris Johnson not to use the same inflammatory language which she and other female MPs were receiving in death threats.

"They often quote his words 'Surrender Act', 'betrayal', 'traitor' and I for one am sick of it. We must moderate our language, and it has to come from the prime minister first."
In response, Mr Johnson said: "I have to say, Mr Speaker, I've never heard such humbug in all my life."

If I remember rightly, you were on that thread complaining that people had criticised Johnson, and saying you didn't see anything at all wrong with any of what he'd said.

Stuck in my mind.

PerkingFaintly · 12/04/2020 12:42

So in answer to your post, yes, some of us do dissect and criticise men's speech.

Not all of us, though, clearly...Hmm

I think she gets chucked under the bus every single time the Tories are in a shitty situation because they know the public dislike her. I also think she's inept and does a terrible job in politics because she doesn't give a shit about anyone, which makes it so much easier to chuck her under the bus because when the shit hits the fan, she smirks and shouts "party" rather than try to resolve the issue. .

So it's hard to feel sympathy or kindness towards her when she perpetually behaves like an angst-ridden teen "I'm sorry if you feel". My 14 year old knows not to apologise like that because it elicits a strong bollocking about not owning his shitty behaviour; turns out our Home Secretary has less about her than a sweaty teen boy.

But this is exactly what the Tories want; chuck her to the press and they look like the good guys, waltzing back in and taking charge. Who else were they going to throw to the wolves? Boris is hiding, Rishi is the only one liked by more than his own family, Handcock is desperately working to shift the blame, there was no-one else to feed to the press but Patel who lets not forget we already hated because of all her other mis-steps (and I don't deny there were many). She's no worse than the rest of them. No better, certainly, but no worse.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/04/2020 12:44

That was a thread about the content of a speech. This, and others recently, seems more about the way women speak, whether or not they still have shapes eyebrows etc.

Even the cameras did it, pulling back to show her standing non a platform.

Appearance over content.

There was much in what she did say to criticise without focussing on her appearance or lack of gs

PerkingFaintly · 12/04/2020 12:47

BTW I have a great deal of sympathy for people who stumble over words a little, on occasion. I think Ruth May, the CNO, got a little tangled at the podium a few days ago, and I haven't heard the Business Secretary on Marr, but I'm inclined to cut them a bit of slack.

Patel repeated "measures against counterterrorism" over and over again. It wasn't a momentary tongue-tangle. She either doesn't think about what word comes out of her own mouth at any given time, or doesn't know what the words mean in the first place.

Neither is good.

oldmum22 · 12/04/2020 13:08

PP was very poor . Her statements were incoherent and her manner unsympathetic. It is very sad that the Tories cannot muster a female member of the Cabinet to engage with the media without there being a backlash about her lack of empathy . There are Tory MPs capable of delivering the message without getting so mixed up. The old adage of "Preparation Prevents Poor Performance" springs to mind.

SunshineCake · 12/04/2020 14:55

How on earth can anyone saying Boris is hiding?! He's just had an illness that could have killed him and necessitated a stay in ITU ffs.

Alsohuman · 12/04/2020 15:06

But no one comments at the smirking we get from Emily Thornberry and the patronising language she uses

She’s not Home Secretary to my knowledge. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/04/2020 15:35

I missed the Boris is hiding comment... nope! Can't get my head round that!

midsomermurderess · 12/04/2020 16:07

Emily Thornnerry isn't the Home Secretary, on tv, giving a briefing. And I think a man dropping his 'g's would be as much commented on as a woman doing it, fwiw.

PigletJohn · 12/04/2020 16:38

Boris' cabinet is bound to come over as inept, because he sacked, deselected or hounded out all the experienced, thoughtful, competent politicians.

There's an old German joke about Party loyalists that I won't repeat now.

B1rdbra1n · 12/04/2020 17:28

I think a man dropping his 'g's would be as much commented on as a woman doing it, fwiw
maybe you're right but I think I'd find it just as objectionable if it were a man.
It's as if she is trying to be a bit 'street' but it sounds contrived and unprofessional to me

midsomermurderess · 12/04/2020 17:41

Look at Twitter, so many people have found her 'g' dropping unbearable. Right;y, wrongly, it drives people mad.

midsomermurderess · 12/04/2020 17:51

And people used to comment on Gordon Brown's odd mouth/chin thing he did. We notice and comment on irritating ticks.

Womenwotlunch · 12/04/2020 18:37

I think that most of the politicians at these briefings have been piss poor.
I really want to like PP, God knows that we need more women and people from BAME in senior positions. However, I can’t bear her.

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2020 18:52

Curious I actually pointed out here or maybe the other thread that they immediately went to her to ask for apology when they hadn't asked the ones directly responsible for sourcing it the same thing.

I didn't think that fair - but on the flip side I think they attacked her because her attitude makes her an easy target.

It's just so uncomfortable and such a shit show

Egghead68 · 12/04/2020 19:59

Sadiq Khan also says “in” instead of “ing” and it is equally distracting and annoying imo.

campion · 13/04/2020 12:22

Yes that dropping of the 'g'. It's like they only learned 25 letters of the alphabet.
Don't they have any instruction in public speakin?
