Priti Patel address

She seems cold and untrustworthy. Her speech is full of words such as ‘compassion’ but I feel she isn’t worthy of addressing the nation like this in view of how she’s behaved.

Surely “being good at delivering a speech“ is actually a core skill of being a senior politician?

mbosnz · 11/04/2020 18:09

I don't think the time is really right for pissy little 'well I'm sorry if people feel that way' responses. . . if you're in the bloody hot seat then respond genuinely, and with at least an appearance of understanding that people have died more probably than not with a lack of PPE being a significant contributing factor.

WinterCat · 11/04/2020 18:10

I know there has been a lot of questions about where she has been and why she hasn’t been doing any of the speeches but better that for the government than what they did, which was bring her out and let people see how awful she is. She smirked, she rolled her eyes when the first journalist’s question couldn’t be heard and was so insincere and incapable of answering anything.

I havent read the full thread, and I am not a PP fan by any means, but the journalists seems to be much more sarcastic and rude than any of her male counterparts.

MamaMeeAh · 11/04/2020 18:12

I’m not clear whether Boris Johnson is too sick to work or playing Sudoku at Chequers. Very mixed messages. I personally think he must have been very very ill and they won’t admit it.

Chienloup · 11/04/2020 18:12

I thought she tried really hard to come across as compassionate. But 20 minutes in, she was answering the question about being sorry for lack of PPE through noticeably gritted teeth and had to rein in her natural agressive.

smiften · 11/04/2020 18:13

She was very poor, so was the police representative. The first one of these briefings that I didn't bother watching all the way through.

Hopefully they'll keep her well hidden in future.

GrumpyHoonMain · 11/04/2020 18:15

I thought she did very well and came across as good at her job which is more than Hancox at least.

MamaMeeAh · 11/04/2020 18:18

Not a fan of Hancock generally but I actually think he comes across a genuine and fairly empathetic during his conferences.

Mrsmadevans · 11/04/2020 18:22

'Not a fan of Hancock generally but I actually think he comes across a genuine and fairly empathetic during his conferences.'
Yes me too

Sostenueto · 11/04/2020 18:22

' I'm sorry if you feel....'. Grrr! How many times have I heard that from people who are not really apologising! This was no apology whatsoever. I absolutely can't abide the woman. Am glad I'm not the only one that felt like throwing something at the tv!

Sostenueto · 11/04/2020 18:28

They are all slimy liars who put their careers before anything else. They put economics before life too. That's why they were so slow to react, why they ran down the NHS, why there was no prep for a pandemic after SARS and Swine flu! They will open lockdown too early as they are terrified if economy and second wave will be right on top of flu season. And worst thing even the press aren't asking right questions like why haven't you told everyone the deathrate yesterday was even higher than the worst day for Italy and Spain and why are your figures not including care home and community deaths and get what IS the actual true figures? Sorry! Rant overBlush

Cam77 · 11/04/2020 18:28

New political excuse of the day "it wAsnT mE wE Was Just fOlloWin' DA SciENcZ"

Except of course for climate change, education, drugs , Brexit, or any other issue which might impact our right wing ideology.

PickAChew · 11/04/2020 18:34

Her comment about lack of PPR amounted to "I'm sorry you feel that way." Dreadful woman.

Lovebb · 11/04/2020 18:35

Mumsnet posters doesn’t like a Tory MP

What a shocker!

MaxNormal · 11/04/2020 18:35

Typical of the idiot journalists, though. And it was Priti's turn to do a stint answering those imbeciles. How the speakers manage to keep their tempers is beyond me.

Oh quite, can't possibly have politicians having to do pesky things like answer perfectly valid questions from the press and other such annoyances of a working democracy.

itsgettingweird · 11/04/2020 18:37

It was a shit show!

She is cold and robotic. She is repetitive and unempathetic.

And the media spent too much time trying to exploit this rather than ask valuable questions.

Why ask the Home Secretary to apologise for nhs staff deaths due to lack of PPE when they haven't asked the PM, his deputy or the actual health secretary.

I feel she'll be MIA for another 3 weeks minimum.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 11/04/2020 18:37

I'm sorry ' if' = I'm not sorry at all but am being forced to apologise.

Because if you were really sorry, you would not be doubting the views of people who you are apologising to.

itsgettingweird · 11/04/2020 18:43

I actually don't like her and agree with PP as a BAME female political you so want her to succeed.

But I do not think it was fair for media to beg her for an apology for something she doesn't deal with.

Ask Matt Hancock, Dominic Raab or even BoJo to apologise for PPE.
I don't like the media exploiting government weaknesses for their own gain rather than actually focusing on the task in hand.

She's not a good person. But she did actually have a good plan and message for those at risk (minus the twee signage) and was food at admitting some police had over stepped the remark.
She did over egg the policing by consent message though!

AlternativePerspective · 11/04/2020 18:44

I’m not clear whether Boris Johnson is too sick to work or playing Sudoku at Chequers. Very mixed messages. I personally think he must have been very very ill and they won’t admit it. well, given he’s spent half the week in ICU I think it’s fair to say he’s been very very ill. No? What a stupid statement.

As for Priti Patel, she is a ghastly woman, a crap public speaker and the way she snapped at that journalist about being sorry just showed her up for the awful human being she is.

it’s not hard to see why she’s turned down the opportunity to do the commons address four times....

Hopefully she’ll crawl back under her rock now and will be got rid of in the next reshuffle.

MamaMeeAh · 11/04/2020 19:02

It’s not a stupid statement. No need to be so rude Hmm They said he was sitting up in bed and doing sudoku the other day. No?

Bloomburger · 11/04/2020 19:28

But no one comments at the smirking we get from Emily Thornberry and the patronising language she uses 🙄

Viviennemary · 11/04/2020 19:30

It was dreadful. She is totally out of her depth an should be replaced. She wasn't even attempting to have any empathy. Disgraceful.

Lonelycrab · 11/04/2020 19:40

Mumsnet posters doesn’t like a Tory MP

No it’s probably more they don’t like rubbish MPs, that all.

Confusedbutheyho · 11/04/2020 19:57

@lovebb

Some of us are a bit partial to some Tory MP’s when they’re delivering their speeches actually Grin
