I just did a standing ovation. Powerful message!

That's it really!

Did anyone else see it?

I thought the mentioning of Meghan Markle was ridiculous. And insulting to a Royal Family and country who welcomed her with open arms at the start.

So how do you explain the contrast in how Kate and Meghan were treated by the press? That's all he said in the song.

Quirrelsotherface · 19/02/2020 20:02

soupdragon

There was no difference. D of Cambridge was treated abhorrently by the press in the beginning if I remember rightly. Cameras following her in the street, everything she wore reported on, her poor family insulted daily (her mum, sister, brother and uncle in particular). Called lazy and stupid for waiting for William to propose. I could go on.

I am by no means saying it was right but you can't say it was any different.

june2007 · 19/02/2020 23:35

Well what about Princess Di, What about Caroline Flack? What do you say when you can,t play the racist card.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/02/2020 03:21

If I didn't already have bingo, 'racist card' would be a full house.

crankysaurus · 20/02/2020 03:41

Didn't watch the Brits but caught it as it was doing the rounds on Twitter, amazing song!

GEEpEe · 20/02/2020 06:52

Kate and wills were completely left alone at university and enjoyed many years in peace.

SoupDragon · 20/02/2020 08:27

There was no difference.

Oh, there absolutely was. There was an article comparing how they were treated over the same things. You'd have to be really blinkered not to see it.

SoupDragon · 20/02/2020 08:28

What does that have to do with anything? You know there can be more than one problem, right?

Notthebloodygym · 20/02/2020 08:49

I hate it when people say "play the racist card". It is usually said by people who like to think racism is an invention.

JustForTheTasteOfIt · 20/02/2020 09:12

I say things about relevant factors so when race isn't a factor I tend not to mention it obviously...

I do see that phrase and ‘you can’t say anything anymore’ as a hint to how the conversation is going to go

Its like an early warning system

chocolatespiders · 20/02/2020 09:34

He is amazing... took DD to paris to see him perform and WOW!
Question time is also another one worth listening to by him.

TooTrueToBeGood · 20/02/2020 10:00

Agreed. I'm not sure the plonkers that say it even really know what they are trying to say. They are just repeating something they've heard before and never actually thought through. Maybe everyone should start giving a standard response along the lines of "and I see you've decided to play the dismissive bigoted wanker card".

Gilead · 20/02/2020 10:43

play the racist card Always wheeled out by racists.

Isn't it just!

Nowhere, as far as I remember, did Kate have dog whistle racial associations made such as the press referring to her as "Straight Outta Compton" which is a reference to an area of LA with some gang issues.

And the picture of Meghan with the word "niggles" printed over it? Its not too hard to imagine what word they really wanted to print, is it? Total dog whistle racism.

As a white person, it disappoints me when white people don't "see" racism, but what makes me furious, is when a white person maintains that because they haven't seen it, it doesn't exist - try respecting the opinion and experience of the black person who would actually KNOW.

How much of an arrogant arsehole have you got to be to say you know better than a black person, about whether they have experienced racism. It's sort of like men defining for women what is and isn't sexist, and refusing to accept a woman's take on it.

Xansaf · 20/02/2020 13:51

At a time where the country is still so divided along political lines, provocative political stunts like this by entertainers are not helpful or appropriate. He doesn’t even know Boris Johnson, but it’s ok to attack him isn’t it? Because he happens to be a conservative.

Xansaf · 20/02/2020 13:52

Also praising jail inmates? They’re there for a reason, as he well knows.

SoupDragon · 20/02/2020 13:59

You don't need to know someone to judge their actions.

recordbox · 20/02/2020 13:59

This. And I am white.

The arrogance of people dismissing racism makes me sick.

ThatGuy36 · 20/02/2020 14:08

I managed to catch the performance, it was thought provoking and blunt.

I doubt with this many comments the conversation has mainly been about the music though.

TooTrueToBeGood · 20/02/2020 14:15

We are a democracy. Citizens have a right, indeed a duty, to hold our elected politicians to account. Why on earth would you object to that? You may not share the individual's opinion but it's rather arrogant to think they don't have the right to even express an opinion.

yomommasmomma · 20/02/2020 14:18

Dave was amazing.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/02/2020 14:30

I don't know Hitler, Mao, Stalin or Pol Pot. Happy to have a go and none of them are Conservative. Dave is British, he's allowed an opinion on his Prime Minister, particularly as that Prime Minister has a history of racist slurs.

recordbox · 20/02/2020 14:49

He doesn’t even know Boris Johnson, but it’s ok to attack him isn’t it?

Eh? Surely no one is this short sighted!
