I just did a standing ovation. Powerful message!

That's it really!

Did anyone else see it?

I would have thought more of him if he hadn't dedicated the award to his brother.

I also wonder how the reparations thing works. Presumably I need absolute proof that my ancestors were enslaved? how on earth would I get that? And why would I ask for compensation from people who had nothing to do with it?

MimiLaRue · 19/02/2020 11:58

wow I LOVE him

GEEpEe · 19/02/2020 12:01

....

It's really easy to know if your ancestors were slaves if you are black. For one, if you are black and Caribbean then it's like a 98% chance. Same with African American. For Africans it is a little more complex but your ancestors would have a good chance of being taken from your place or Origin to a Western country like the US or a Caribbean Island.

A good few countries have systems which try to counteract some of the inequality caused by colonisation. Reparations could work that way.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 19/02/2020 12:03

Just watched the YouTube video up thread

He was fantastic, very moving, great talent

Im a bit lost for words...thank goodness he isn’t!!

AutumnRose1 · 19/02/2020 12:05

GEE - oh, so Dave isn't referring to personal reparations?

a % chance doesn't track anyone directly. But even if it did, I wouldn't want to go to the government and ask for money to compensate for something they didn't do.

Bellapaws · 19/02/2020 12:07

i actually found he is the racist one ! imagine if it was some one white singing about been racist there would be uproar

GEEpEe · 19/02/2020 12:07

No as in you can trace your family back to slave records. I think a 98% chance is pretty high. The 2% will be people who know why they don't have that history. Regardless, because of slavery, all black people are disadvantaged just by not being white.

I dont know Dave's personal views on reparation but I do know that reparation doesn't mean a handout of cash in all cases.

GEEpEe · 19/02/2020 12:10

What if the people in our Government today have only risen to such heights because they benefited off of the slave trade and have acquired inherited privilege ever since?

This site gives us some insight into how our own families might have been involved in the slave trade.

Not RTFT but my goodness, I just 'wikepediad' him - he's 21!! Amazing, I could be his mother! 😳

Kokeshi123 · 19/02/2020 12:18

Spiked has just described it as "a Guardian editorial put to music". It's well intentioned I'm sure, but great rap it is not!

Helloitsmemargaret · 19/02/2020 12:22

@Squirrelpeanutbutter do you have to have met someone to know they are racist? I've never met Hitler but pretty sure he was racist.

Astonishing that a song about race as powerfully written as that and people still don't hear what he is saying.

boredbored · 19/02/2020 12:22

Do watch. Dave would likely want you to.

I'm pretty sure what Dave would think of you...

There is an issue with young black boys killing each other

Please Mr white man tell me why the above statement is racist? I'm not talking about why there is an issue, I don't need you to teach me that thanks.

GEEpEe · 19/02/2020 12:27

As a young, black guy, Dave should be rightly suspicious of me (white guy in authority position). I wouldn't blame him for being anything but that.

The above statement isn't racist alone. It's the context in which the statement exists. Dave would probably start sentence that way but it wouldn't finish without pointing towards factors other than their race that explain the actual reasons why.

boredbored · 19/02/2020 12:38

Yeah like I said I don't need you to educate me thanks.

I'm gobsmacked how you can simultaneously tell mothers of black boys that they are wrong & ignorant & racist. Maybe you should check your privilege.

GEEpEe · 19/02/2020 12:40

Why would having a black child make you less likely to fall for media hype?

Gilead · 19/02/2020 12:41

i actually found he is the racist one ! imagine if it was some one white singing about been racist there would be uproar
Good grief! And there he was talking about and thanking Jack Merrit.
You obviously have no concept of racism, but please, explain...

CallofDoodee · 19/02/2020 12:43

As a young, black guy, Dave should be rightly suspicious of me (white guy in authority position). I wouldn't blame him for being anything but that.

Sweetheart, you're not coming across as you think you are coming across.

The above statement isn't racist alone. It's the context in which the statement exists.

Did it not occur to you that people on this thread already know very well the context in which this statement exists and therefore didn't feel the need to explain it?

CallofDoodee · 19/02/2020 12:44

i actually found he is the racist one ! imagine if it was some one white singing about been racist there would be uproar

🙄🙄🙄

GEEpEe · 19/02/2020 12:45

I think in a climate where that statement is used by all sorts of people, it needs explaining.

I'd be more worried about appearing frightfully racist than some sort of well read White Knight.

boredbored · 19/02/2020 12:51

Why would having a black child make you less likely to fall for media hype?

i'm talking about my own experiences.

Just because you watch Top boy, listen to Dave & have searched the urban dictionary doesn't mean you have a clue.

Your posts are coming across as the ignorant & racist ones but hey I'm used to it.

boredbored · 19/02/2020 12:56

I'd be more worried about appearing frightfully racist than some sort of well read White Knight.

Well that would be a fail then....

derxa · 19/02/2020 12:56

Astonishing that a song about race as powerfully written as that and people still don't hear what he is saying. But I did hear what he is saying. He is saying that Boris Johnson is racist. But people kept saying this throughout the last election and it didn't make a bit of difference. In fact people got fed up hearing it. And I'm no BJ fan.

GEEpEe · 19/02/2020 12:58

No I listen to experts and attend lectures in my spare time on it to better understand the obstacles of the population I serve. I'm literally regurgitating their work on it.

golddustwomen · 19/02/2020 12:59

Hadn't heard of Dave til reading this thread today. Not really my usual type of music and never watch the brits. But wow.. that was fucking powerful. Off to Spotify the shit out of Dave..

Rollergirl11 · 19/02/2020 13:05
