I just did a standing ovation. Powerful message!

That's it really!

Did anyone else see it?

Racist? An opinionated rant?

I know this is a cliché thing to say but what world are you living in?

I think you need to listen properly.

Divebar · 19/02/2020 01:11

I follow Dave on Instagram and although I’m no doubt not his target demographic I love that he doesn’t hide his musical training - he can play the piano and he’s not pretending otherwise. He's clever and he’s not dumbing down. I enjoyed Stormzy too although I didn’t think it was as powerful as his previous Brit appearance when he stood without his shirt in the “ rain”.

Nousernameforme · 19/02/2020 01:37

@boredbored this is what people are saying about how no one can be pure enough.
Someone does something amazing and inspiring and an internet voice pops up to say " yeah yeah but last month they did something really shit." Just to take the shine off.

user1471449295 · 19/02/2020 02:16

@Whydididothatfuckingthing what part of his performance did you find racist? Please do tell, as I’m scratching my brain trying to recall racist remarks.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 19/02/2020 02:35

I’m scratching my brain trying to recall racist remarks.

There is a mentality that pointing out the inherent racism that exists in the UK is - somehow - racist.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/02/2020 02:58

Personally thought it was racist

There's a Navajo saying. When you point a finger, three point back at you.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 19/02/2020 03:08

Or the MN saying, MrsT.

When you point a finger, you may get the finger. :o

His performance certainly raised his media profile, which should help shift more units. Clever move.

OccasionalNachos · 19/02/2020 05:43

Indeed, good for him, raising his profile and doing well Hmm

GEEpEe · 19/02/2020 06:08

Dave is amazing.

Anyone who hasn't watched Top Boy really should.

mamamalt · 19/02/2020 06:30

Amazing. He's so so young too. It's incredible, it was a beautifully written poem performed with passion.

TooTrueToBeGood · 19/02/2020 06:42

Last verse was an opinionated rant

I agree with you. Where we differ though Is that I support everyone's right to an opinion and when someone is ranting, frustrated or angry I keep an open mind and try and understand why they feel the way they do. I heard him.

recordbox · 19/02/2020 07:38

Not so much clever as normal. Isn't this what all artists are trying to achieve?

GEEpEe · 19/02/2020 07:42

Dave is an absolutely huge star with US following through his association with Drake.

buttonmoonb4tea · 19/02/2020 07:52

Personally thought it was racist.

There's always one 🙄.

Did you actually listen to the words?

OP posts:
buttonmoonb4tea · 19/02/2020 07:54

And YY to watching Top Boy although I really didn't like the character Dave played. He was nuts!

OP posts:
GEEpEe · 19/02/2020 07:57

"Daily offender, Crazy Eastender"

boredbored · 19/02/2020 08:00

this is what people are saying about how no one can be pure enough. Someone does something amazing and inspiring and an internet voice pops up to say

No, I feel uncomfortable that a song on his Mercury award winning album features his brother (who is serving life for stabbing a 15 yr old to death).

I'm not sure how you can class that as yeah yeah but last month they did something really shit."

Should I not find it uncomfortable or inappropriate in order to not take the shine off?

Squirrelpeanutbutter · 19/02/2020 08:03

Has he even met Boris?

London91 · 19/02/2020 08:04

I love Dave and love the song Black. It's one of those songs that give me goose bumps because most of the words ring so true in society today. I think he's an inspiration to young men out there. His performance last night was amazing.

GEEpEe · 19/02/2020 08:05

I don't get the problem. Plenty of violent criminals have made money and found fame after or during their conviction. His brothers are a big part of his life. 2 of them have long sentences if I remember rightly.

I... dont think you have to meet Boris to see what he's all about.

maddy68 · 19/02/2020 08:05

Incredible. Just watched it

recordbox · 19/02/2020 08:08

Has he even met Boris?

Spectacularly missing the point with this wee gem.

CallofDoodee · 19/02/2020 08:11

His performance certainly raised his media profile, which should help shift more units. Clever move.

Lol, imagine a music artist wanting to raise his media profile and sell his music... Shocking! Hmm

I thought it was pretty good, although Stormzy did the exact same thing last year didn't her re: Grenfell and calling out the PM? So it wasn't exactly groundbreaking

I loved the mic drop at the end though, it was so cute!
