Just read this on their instagram page.
They plan on becoming private citizens

OP posts:

Can't say I'm shocked but at the same time, I am.
I reckon they'll move overseas, possibly Canada or South Africa?

Vintagevixen · 08/01/2020 18:44

Has been predicted on blind item sites ever since they married, no suprise.

DonPablo · 08/01/2020 18:44

Can't blame him!

Well....not quite. They plan on stepping down as senior royals.

CormoranStrike · 08/01/2020 18:44

Wow! Not renouncing titles though.

Whataboutthattthen · 08/01/2020 18:45

Can’t say I’m surprised. All the best to them.

Stronger2020 · 08/01/2020 18:45

Er - that’s not what it actually says, is it! Hmm

2020BetterBeBetter · 08/01/2020 18:45

In fairness, the royal family doesn’t need as many members as it currently has and I doubt many would enjoy being under the spotlight like they are.

Are they planning on keeping titles, security and money from tax payers or completely stepping down for totally private lives?

DecemberSnow · 08/01/2020 18:45

Always on the cards.

Best of luck to them.

edgewater · 08/01/2020 18:45

They are stepping down as Senior Royals. Not stepping away from the family.

Good for them I say.

Stronger2020 · 08/01/2020 18:46

Talk about a click bait headline OP

Chihaha · 08/01/2020 18:46

It's worth reading the actual statement. They clearly stay theyll be staying within the institution.

I can't see anyone being allowed to do something that would put andy higher up in the order of succession at the moment.

2020BetterBeBetter · 08/01/2020 18:46

Just googled and can already see they are just stepping back as senior royals.

Stronger2020 · 08/01/2020 18:46

Also - they’re spinning it a bit as being sixth in the line of succession means they’re not really senior anyway and will become even less so as the three children grow up and have their own children.

Chihaha · 08/01/2020 18:47

Working towards being financially independent. Which is hilarious given how much harry has inherited over the years!

Fraggot · 08/01/2020 18:47

What will be the difference in senior royal to royal?

frankincenseandmur · 08/01/2020 18:47

Fair play to them

LightOff · 08/01/2020 18:48

Just read the msg now. Was expecting it but not this soon. I know lots will be happy but I think it is sad news.

Conformingtoregulations · 08/01/2020 18:48

Is there a link please?

DesLynamsMoustache · 08/01/2020 18:49

Senior royals have to do lots of stuff. Appearances, state events, etc. More minor royals don't.

Stronger2020 · 08/01/2020 18:49

Also

“Working towards” means jack.

I’m “working towards” being a size 8 and a millionaire.... Hmm

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 08/01/2020 18:49

The right thing to do in my opinion. Becoming private citizens would be even better still.

I wonder if this is an attempt to signal that the RF will definitely be streamlining after HM passes and if there's been any gentle encouragement to make this move or it's entirely their idea.

PortiaCastis · 08/01/2020 18:51

Ah the media have achieved their gaol

MCBerberLoop · 08/01/2020 18:51

TBF I think if they could get to the fame/attention level of Zara and Mike, everyone would be happier.

You never know, she could go back to acting and he could be her house husband! She’s clearly a lot happier engaging with the world and they can live in the states and have a nice life. Good for them.

Lulualla · 08/01/2020 18:51

That isn't what those said. They are stepping back from the current definition of a senior royal, which is someone who works full time as a royal and is given a decent wage by the queen. They will probably stop doing all the engagements expected of them as full time royals, and just become similar to the other further afield royals who can work privately and be paid for that work, whilst still attending big things like memorial days etc.

Sounds like they will be going onto private endeavors which they will accept parent for, which right now they cannot do. And finding a progressive way forward within the institution makes it clear that they wont be leaving royal life or giving up titles. They want to remain as royals, with the benefits and treatment that gets them, whilst being able to work privately and be paid. I'm guessing Meghan will start up something in the arts, harry will focus on military things and mental health etc.
