Anyone Else Excited For AUTUMN :-)

The weather where I am this week has been crap, hot one minute, then blowing a hoolie and lashing it down the next, I never know what to wear each day and end up either cold and wet or hot and bothered because the weather hasn't made up its mind and I get caught out!
Don't get me wrong when summer is actually SUMMER ie. blue skies, sunny & a gentle breeze- I love it!!!! But this is just urgh.

I'm longing for crunchy leaves, boots, furry gilets, hot chocolate, pumpkins, roast dinners, dying my hair as dark as my soul 😆... anyone else with me?!

Indeed Lindormilk Grin

I don't mind the cold when it is sunny, but I hate the claustrophobic feeling of the long dark nights. It makes me feel really low, as do low light levels. It doesn't help that I have poor eyesight and need good light levels to see well.

There are no small children in our family, and we are a family of 3 with no relatives living nearby so festivities like Halloween are non existent, and Christmas is so low key that is can get a little dull. Life just seems to go on hold from 24th December until after new year as everyone else is busy with their own families.

Ideally I would like to go somewhere hot for Christmas and New Year and basically forget about it.

HeadintheiClouds · 10/08/2019 18:07

Ffs, sooty Hmm

wanderings · 12/08/2019 08:12

Noooooooo!

I wish I was good at art, because if so, I would be drawing the following (would anyone care to do this for me? Wink ):

Autumn being a huge monster, wearing Ugg boots and a heavy coat, surrounded by falling leaves, chasing me along a windswept beach, away from the sunshine, while I run away, my flip flops flying off my feet.

When I was a child, we had this Play School record with the song "Summertime is over, winter's almost here..." which I hated. I had another story where the seasons and months were people, and Autumn was an irritable young man, who treated his months badly.

OtraCosaMariposa · 12/08/2019 08:21

When I am queen of the world I am going to ban the following words:

snuggle
cosy
hot choc

S0CKS · 12/08/2019 08:24

Yes!! I was sat under a blanket watching TV Saturday afternoon and i said to my DH i am ready for autumn now i would say its my favourite season all the colours etc

TapasForTwo · 12/08/2019 08:30

Yes OtraCosaMsriposa!
It felt very autumnal this morning. 11 degrees when I left the house. I have been wearing socks for the last few days.

BenWillbondsPants · 12/08/2019 08:36

Yep, I'm with you. I'm fed up with some days pretending to be Autumn then the next it's summer again. Yesterday was like bloody November here and it's warm and sunny again today but apparently going to pish down this afternoon.

Don't know if I'm going for a BBQ or a hog roast when it comes to getting dressed and it's very vexing! Grin

mrslaurenbrown · 12/08/2019 08:42

I'm with you. All our big celebrations (birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas etc.) fall over autumn/winter so it has massively exciting and positive connotations for me. Also I'm not great with the heat and suffer from hayfever so I'm much more comfortable in the winter. Anyone else getting excited for apple and cinnamon? Because same!

Delatron · 12/08/2019 08:46

The weather is shit at the moment and I do hate the confusion over what to wear. Love it when I can just fling on shorts and flip flops and not worry about a coat.

I genuinely do not understand the appeal of sitting under a blanket on the sofa? Reminds me of old people in a home or something. And that is appealing and makes autumn and winter and all the cold dark nights and mornings ok? Because you can sit under a blanket on the sofa.....?!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 12/08/2019 08:50

I'm NOT SWEATING today. It's bliss Grin I'm perfectly happy for summer to continue for a while longer; I enjoy this end of it, when the fresh green new growth on the plants has settled in and everything's less frantic to grow and is just relaxed and basking in the hazy liquid gold. It's my favourite time in gardens. But the slight hint of impending change - the cooler mornings, the odd leaf on the ground, the occasional waft of smoke on the air - that excites me like no other time of year. Jumpers are coming...

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/08/2019 08:51

Yes, season of mists and mellow soupfulness!
I've always loved the run-up to Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas.

And a big plus of soupfulness is that big, main-meal bowls full are so cheap to make with seasonal veg, lentils and pearl barley, etc. Always a colder-season mainstay in this house.

I won't even be dreading early January like I usually do, since a new little Gdc is due then.

TapasForTwo · 12/08/2019 18:53

What is the obsession with soup?

Delatron · 12/08/2019 19:24

I have soup in summer quite often and apples, cinnamon, hot drinks and chilli!

managedmis · 12/08/2019 19:24

I was actually day dreaming today about my burgundy suede boots

Confused
managedmis · 12/08/2019 19:26

It was crisp here at the weekend (well, crispier) and I was in HEAVEN

EdWinchester · 12/08/2019 19:31

Yes me! We are v lucky in that we have a house on the US east coast. We have been here for a couple of weeks and we absolutely love our time here.

The weather is glorious and we’ve been to the beach every day, but I am daydreaming about autumn at home: dog walks, boots, lighting the wood burner and candles, the run up to Christmas... and more importantly, no expectation and disappointment at the weather.

managedmis · 12/08/2019 19:31

Sorry, just had to repost this

I'm considering turning the underfloor heating system back on at home- the mornings have had a distinct fresh crispness about them the past 2 days! May even need to dig my dressing gown out Grin! Wednesday is forecast to be torrential rain so DH has requested cheese and potato pie, beans and crusty bread for dinner (one of our cheap winter staples 😋) can't bloody wait!

OP posts:
BearRabbitPants · 13/08/2019 06:36

@TapasForTwo I'm not actually overly keen on soup 🥣- it's stews casseroles & roast dinner /shepherds pie etc that I'm longing for 😋

Lucafritz · 13/08/2019 06:41

Love autumn. Although I had a nice summer this year but I love the autumn leaves.

DrCoconut · 13/08/2019 14:01

Delatron I agree about the blanket thing. Do people really have time to sit around under blankets all autumn/winter? What about work, school run, kids activities, dr/hospital appointments, car MOT, shopping, housework, entertaining DC, seeing friends etc. I count going to the toilet as a sit down most days and couldn't imagine just being able to put my life on hold for half the year to sit under a nasty itchy blanket. It's what I do if I'm ill. That's why winter sucks so much, scraping ice off the car in the dark to go take the kids to school is not easier or more fun than just opening the door and getting in whatever the cosy blanket hot choc people say. I've been very disappointed by this year's summer. Constant rain and literally a handful of hot days and it now appears to be over before we've even managed a second day at the seaside. 6 degrees predicted for tonight according to the radio 😫👎🏻. I don't bother with Halloween and would quite happily sack bonfire night off too for a good run of long, 25 degree days. My entire family are healthier and happier in the better weather.

HeadintheiClouds · 13/08/2019 14:09

I think you’ve wildly misunderstood about the blanket, Coconut. Nobody suggested putting your entire life on hold to sit under a blanket, you can’t seriously have thought that?

Nothingcomesforfree · 13/08/2019 14:20

Nope.
Horribly expensive.
I like my cheap flip flops, vest and shorts. Not having the heating on, not having the lights on at 5 in the evening drying clothes outside, not wearing make up because I have a tan, not wearing tights, being able to walk not drive because it’s lashing down.
Most importantly no sodding Christmas - end of September and it’s the run up to the “ the big day”.
