Anyone Else Excited For AUTUMN :-)

The weather where I am this week has been crap, hot one minute, then blowing a hoolie and lashing it down the next, I never know what to wear each day and end up either cold and wet or hot and bothered because the weather hasn't made up its mind and I get caught out!
Don't get me wrong when summer is actually SUMMER ie. blue skies, sunny & a gentle breeze- I love it!!!! But this is just urgh.

I'm longing for crunchy leaves, boots, furry gilets, hot chocolate, pumpkins, roast dinners, dying my hair as dark as my soul 😆... anyone else with me?!

No, but these people give the impression they spend a long time doing it rather than the odd few minutes waiting for dinner to finish cooking or something. I would only really have time to do this if I was off work sick or something. Aren't people busy with general life even in winter, especially as things often take longer in bad weather? I'd get behind really quickly if I sat snuggling so I prefer good weather to just crack on with things. (To avoid drip feed I'm a lone parent, not by choice, of 2 children with SN and 1 preschooler so relaxing is almost alien).

HeadintheiClouds · 13/08/2019 14:32

Think if it as swapping out sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine on a summer evening with snuggling under a blanket in front of a blazing log fire.
Some people prefer the latter Grin

Delatron · 13/08/2019 15:42

Agree DrCoconut! ‘Snuggling’ under a blanket only happens if I’m ill. Who has time? And you autumn people can’t backtrack, if you quote ‘snuggling under a blanket’ as a highlight of autumn then you must do it pretty often?

I do understand we are all different but agree that as a family we are healthier in summer , it’s cheaper as we don’t have the heating on all the time. I hate ferrying the kids about in the dark and cold to all the after school stuff. I don’t understand why people look forward to the cold and flu season.

Propertyofhood · 13/08/2019 16:31

Delatron I agree about the blanket thing. Do people really have time to sit around under blankets all autumn/winter? What about work, school run, kids activities, dr/hospital appointments, car MOT, shopping, housework, entertaining DC, seeing friends etc. I count going to the toilet as a sit down most days and couldn't imagine just being able to put my life on hold for half the year to sit under a nasty itchy blanket.

Calm down, they mean when they are watching telly in the evenings obviously (whilst sitting in front of the log fire and cupping their fingers round the obligatory mug of hot chocolate of course!)

BearRabbitPants · 13/08/2019 16:40

@DrCoconut Hmm Um.. the snuggling under a blanket happens in the evening once kids are in bed, all chores are taken care of & DH & I are settled in front of the telly for a few hours before bed- I don't actually 'dedicate'a Set time for snuggling on the sofa? Liking autumn doesn't equate to having no life!

@Propertyofhood 🙌🏻Thank you! Jesus some people take things to the very extreme 🙄

@HeadintheiClouds you got it right ! I actually enjoy both! I just prefer snuggling Grin

LadyOfTheFlowers · 13/08/2019 16:46

In response to the OP : yes, everything you said. This odd in between weather is just annoying. I am longing to quaff red wine in front of my log fire whilst snuggling the dog as it rains outside.... Grin

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 13/08/2019 17:00

God I hate Autumn and Winter. I don't want to snuggle up under blankets drinking yucky hot chocolate - I want to be outside in the sunshine, breathing fresh air, seeing to my garden and walking the dog. I hate the dark mornings even more than dark evenings - those interminable hours when you wait for it to get light in December! I also hate Hallowe'en, Bonfire Night and Christmas - so there!!

TapasForTwo · 13/08/2019 21:01

It really feels autumnal now. Going down to 7 degrees tonight. Next few days' temps are mid teens.

I would far rather feel warm enough not to need a blanket to snuggle under, but I like a bit of good TV in the evening, and would use a blanket if I needed to. Although I wouldn't class it as a highlight. Nor would I class drinking hot chocolate as a highlight either.

MN does seem to have a lot of hot chocolate lovers.

HeadintheiClouds · 13/08/2019 21:04

If only we could swap, MilkTray. I’d happily trade my summer for your winter.

HeadintheiClouds · 13/08/2019 21:05

I have to agree with the hot chocolate thing, can’t see the hype myself.

TapasForTwo · 13/08/2019 21:08

I'm with Milk Tray in disliking winter. It is the short days, driving to and from work in the dark and gloomy weather that makes me feel so low.

BearRabbitPants · 13/08/2019 21:51

Another good thing about autumn/winter- TV! Eg. GBBO, The Apprentice, The Walking Dead... oohhh I can't wait 😬

I am just as excited as you, OP. I hate hot weather and welcome the cooler nights where you can snuggle into your duvet and get a proper nights sleep instead of sweating all night. Hot weather saps my energy and I start waking up in late August/early September, it's a great feeling.

The Summer-lovers on MN have always expressed anger towards people who love colder weather, no idea why! Grin I imagine living in the UK must be tough if you are a sun seeker.

Nearlyadoctor · 14/08/2019 07:10

@BearRabbitPants - we used to have cheese and potato pie at school, had totally forgotten it existed. Do you have a recipe or is it literally cheesy mash in a dish popped under the grill?

Nothingcomesforfree · 14/08/2019 07:11

IMamaLazarou that’s it though. We have maybe 3 months of something approaching summer. The other 9 are basically some sort of poor weather lottery.

I think it’s the long days I miss the most. Life is short and living in the dark from 8-4 is a waste.

Henlie · 14/08/2019 07:19

Another one here whose favourite season is Autumn! I actually enjoy wearing coats, boots etc. Plus, as the nights draw in its so much easier getting DC to bed at a reasonable hour 😉.

Although I enjoy the summer, i definitely know I couldn’t reside permanently in a country that was hot all year round.....I would miss the variety in weather that seasons bring.

ExpletiveDelighted · 14/08/2019 07:28

Late August/early September is one of my favourite times of year, still warm enough to wear sandals and no coat but less worry about sunburn and no more sweating, I love being able to go about my day without breaking into a sweat. Yesterday was pretty perfect here, sunny most of the day, temperature about 20°, lovely. I'd be happy with that (plus overnight rain) for the whole summer. Although we haven't had many properly hot days this summer thank goodness, the humidity has been awful and I'm really glad the season is turning.

TapasForTwo · 14/08/2019 07:37

"still warm enough to wear sandals"

My feet feel cold at temperatures under 21 degrees. And as autumn temperatures where I live are substantially below that, and it is often wet, sandals don't get worn very much in autumn.

I would be happy with 20 degree autumn days, and sunny of course. I suspect that most of the autumn lovers on here get warmer summers and sunnier, dryer autumns than we do.

Average temperatures for September round here is 16 degrees, and 12 degrees for October. Average July/August temperatures are 18 degrees Sad

ExpletiveDelighted · 14/08/2019 11:29

I stay mostly in sandals till about October, my feet don't really feel the cold, 16° is about my cutoff. I usually dig out my boots and winter coats around half term. Even on wet days like today I tend to stay in sandals as bare feet dry a lot quicker than socks and shoes.

BearRabbitPants · 14/08/2019 11:31

@Nearlyadoctor the way I do it is just mash potatoes mixed with butter salt n pepper & cheese, then top with a layer of grated cheese and bake in the oven till the topping is really crisp and golden. Delicious and sooo easy!

OP posts:
BearRabbitPants · 14/08/2019 11:32

@Henlie agree, I'd hate to live somewhere with no seasons. I'd feel like I had nothing to look forward to and would get bored!

OP posts:
BearRabbitPants · 14/08/2019 11:34

@Nothingcomesforfree I agree I would prefer it if the days were longer in winter I don't enjoy the clocks going back!

Delatron · 15/08/2019 09:12

Lovely morning here. Went for an early morning run and saw lots of people out in the park with dogs in the sunshine.

How anyone can prefer dark cold mornings to this is perplexing. Unless you don’t need to get up early?!
