Anyone watching the Jade Goody doc

Jomalaldi · 07/08/2019 21:50

I’m loving watching this. God love jade. So sad her life was tragically short. It’s such a blast from the past. Anyone else watching?

OP posts:
Mammyloveswine · 15/08/2019 15:12

I was shocked at jo and Danielle laughing away whilst jade ranted at shilpa!

Shilpa did initially come off very self-important but that's what happens with "celebrity"! Jackie is horrible, absolutely awful woman! Jack didn't come across very well at all!

It's quite shocking how much was "allowed" a relatively short time ago, particularly the things people were allowed to print about "celebrities" and what was allowed to be shown.

I also thought dermot o Leary came across badly last night. Davina was very measured.

Slaymill · 15/08/2019 15:29

I don't know why Channel 4 wanted to do this reflection on Jade's life. It seem to still be a hatchet job in parts.

Perhaps having a psychologist speaking about why the tensions happened in the BB house. Rather than Davina and Dermot spouting off. I think her upbringing accounted for a lot of the issues and the Big Brother producers should have had a word after the first incident.

Also the hate fuelled media played their part in whipping up the storm. She showed remorse and suffered a breakdown and tragically had her life cut short.

What ever anyone thinks Jade her children adored her. Her letter to the boys speaks volumes "Some person much wiser than me once said that if you never discovered something you would die for, then you haven't lived.

"Well, you are both proof that I have lived. I will love you always. Mummy."

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/08/2019 16:47

That last bit is lovely, Slaymill, it really is.

NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady · 15/08/2019 16:50

I don't know why Channel 4 wanted to do this reflection on Jade's life.
Because it's been a decade since she died.
Because she was a phenomenon.
Because the 3 parter - idiot, racist, saint - is fascinating example of how media works
Because it works as a drama: rise and then inevitable fall, wanting to die then getting a cancer diagnosis and being quoted as feeling it was punishment/karma - it is her life but the construct is timeless
Because it tells how the last decade has been shaped
Because cervical cancer screening is down again - the last one is the reason I am pleased it is being aired but doubt very much that it was a factor in it being made

C4 commissioner Rob Coldstream said: “Jade was a hugely charismatic personality. She made an indelible impact on our culture – and her incredible life story holds up a mirror to many of the big themes and preoccupations of our time – from fame and celebrity to race and gender politics.”

Alisa Pomeroy, Commissioning Editor Documentaries added: “Jade is a figure who couldn’t have existed at any other moment in history. Her story is the story of the noughties and I’m very excited about what will essentially be a popular history series, told through the prism of an electric, much-loved personality.”

Slaymill · 15/08/2019 17:13

All very valid reasons @NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady I just wish they would have some other voices for example Judi James who worked on Big Brother.

I do hope the final show increases the uptake of cervical smears which has been decreasing to give a positive end to the story. So we both agree there.

DaisyChains6 · 15/08/2019 17:54

Shilpa really didn't come across as a nice person. To me she came across as snooty and like she thought of herself as being above the rest and that is what Jade was mad about. Jade saw herself as an equal, which as a human being she was, but it appeared Shilpa didn't which wound jade up the wrong way.

Cheeseoncrumpets · 15/08/2019 18:35

Doesnt matter whether or not Shilpa was a nice person or not, they were still racist towards her.

I still itch whenever I see Danielle Lloyd on anything. She's so grubby, and skanky and foul.

NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady · 15/08/2019 18:56

I forgot about JJ - body language woman - that said, I am not sure I agree it has been a hatchet job documentary - I think the director has been very even handed actually.
I just posted on the other thread for anyone who has an interest, the ofcom report is interesting reading:
www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0015/61404/channel4_cbb.pdf
The unaired footage is here:
image.guardian.co.uk/sys-files/Media/documents/2007/05/24/CBBtranscript.pdf

Feenie · 15/08/2019 19:49

Anyone who thinks that the incidents weren't racist needs to read those transcripts. And if you still think the same, you are deluded and probably racist.

FullBodyNerdity · 15/08/2019 20:15

Taken from the other thread. Thank you to hodge

Chipstick10 · 15/08/2019 21:05

I remember watching it as it happened. Now ten years on I can’t believe how snobby and snooty Shilpa was, looking down her nose at the riff raff

Hadenoughofitall441 · 15/08/2019 22:31

@Chipstick10 exactly what I said to my mum earlier. I still don’t think jade was directly racist, what she said wasn’t good however I think people automatically jumped on the racist bandwagon because of the word poppadom. She was being vicious no doubt about it, and in the heat of the moment said the first thing that came to her head. I didn’t like the way shilpa acted though when jade apologised to her I found it very manipulative almost like she wanted jade to keep apologising.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 15/08/2019 22:33

I remember watching it at the time and seeing Carol malones face when she found out she had to wait hand and foot for jade and her family. That was priceless 😂

Hellomatey001 · 15/08/2019 22:50

It was a lot worse what they DIDN'T show.

It was alleged that Jack and Jo both started a limerick which alluded to calling Shilpa the P word racial slur. This was at the height of the bullying. It was not broadcast.

Later when the police investigated for racial harassment Ch4 said they would not give up the tapes and the police released a statement saying Ch4 would not co-operate. All on the wikipedia page for the controversy.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celebrity_Big_Brother_racism_controversy

Inappropriatefemale · 15/08/2019 22:56

Carole Malone went on a bit about class in the house, do people really think about class this much in real life? At the end of the day we’re all born into what we’re born into and we’re still all just humans.

Hellomatey001 · 15/08/2019 23:14

Insults levelled at Shilpa during the controversy:

"She should fuck off back home"

"Cunt"

"Wanker"

"Can't speak English"

Lloyd also mentioned that she didn't like Shetty touching her food because she didn't "know where her hands have been".

Referred to as the "Indian" rather than her name.

Poppadom was actually the more milder insults.

Amazed people here didn't think it was racism.

Inappropriatefemale · 15/08/2019 23:22

Cunt and wanker aren’t racist, they’re just insulting but obviously the other comments are, and the Poppadom surname comment, plus the rest.

Sandybval · 15/08/2019 23:31

Their treatment of Shilpa was unacceptable. But how disgusting were the headlines from her first time in the house (shown on last week's show?). Absolutely vile, mocking her appearance relentlessly, calling her thick, big shows mocking her ie Graham Norton in the fat suit; in what world is that acceptable.

Feenie · 15/08/2019 23:54

Ffs,read the unaired transcripts posted above, it's unrefutable.

Inappropriatefemale · 16/08/2019 00:03

Yeah Norton was horrid but then he always has been imo. I remember when Sharon Osbourne was on and this was the days when she would tell anyone, who would listen, about how much she hated Danni Minogue (was jealous of her more like) and Norton joined in with the bitching, as his show has got more popular then his bitching has calmed down, I think?

Hellomatey001 · 16/08/2019 00:11

Some of the worst comments in my opinion, came from Danielle Lloyd. Yet she escaped the worst criticism.

I saw her recently on a Channel 5 programme where she said that she was called racist because she just didn't get on with someone. Errrr no you were called out because you said about an Indian actress she "can't even speak English properly" and "should fuck off home".

I still remember her saying she wanted to flick dried thrush into Shilpa Shetty's curry.ConfusedShock

FullBodyNerdity · 16/08/2019 00:19

I agree that at the start chip - there was definitely a them/us vibe and division set up by production...and Jade was very much wanting to have them all on an equal footing. Hence:

Wishing she was a servant than a master
Berating Ken for not doing the task properly/disrespecting the servants
Telling Shilpa she was a housemate like the rest of them and her shit also stank
Saying in the transcript - How dare she turn her nose up at me? I’m not one of her pissing servants. She’s in a house with nine other people, which [sic] are normal people. Jermaine Jackson is a fucking
legend – you don’t hear him talking down to people. You don’t hear him turning his nose up to people.

In the Ofcom report Channel 4 claimed that Jade's fury with regard to Oxogate was her belief that Shilpa was stuck up and thought she was better than other people and it was clear that Jade thought Shilpa needed to be brought down a level and she was the person to do it. The repeated use of the words ‘princess’, ‘stuck up’ and ‘you need to feel real life’ clearly evidence of class division.
Jade thought that Shilpa was fake and led a privileged life and did not know how ‘normal’ people lived and therefore should do community work and visit the slums in India (not go back to as was reported).

Shilpa (to Jermaine afterwards)
“I cannot fight with people like that, I am not from the roadside,
she must be, and she is.”

Cleo, Dirk and Jermaine all agree at this point that it is a class divide ie Shilpa has some, Jade doesn't
but they, unlike the viewer, haven't been privy to the other conversations yet (undercooked chicken - Jo/ Popadum reference - Jade /should go home rhetoric - Danielle) When you add that to impersonations, personal insults and the limerick horror where the p-word is strongly alluded to it cannot be anything other than racist
Jade was a big part of the unaired limerick furore.

FullBodyNerdity · 16/08/2019 00:31

See transcript and Ofcom linked above.

  1. The Goody family were due to go in the house the previous Summer then shelved for the celeb version which is why Ofcom deemed Channel 4 had not intended to cause a racial divide.
  1. Jackiey mispronounces Shilpa's name 7x in a row about her calling her Princess instead. Jade sticks up for Shilpa and tells her Mum off for not using her name. Jackie will go on to refer to her as the Indian.
Ofcom deemed Jackiey was rude/ignorant but genuinely couldn't pronounce words for shit
  1. Jermaine Jackson mentions white trash and Jerry Springer to explain to Shilpa the class divide. Ofcom deem that Jackson was misquoted by the press as he was uncomfortable with the phrase and never called them that

“She’s [Jade’s] a star and so she has a following and a fan base; her
mother doesn’t. She does not care and I don’t want to… feel like
this. It was referred to her… They brought up the word ‘white trash’
[the word ‘trash’ is mouthed by Jermaine – not actually spoken] and I
don’t want to bring that up but… and I wouldn’t call her that because
she’s a human being, but the fact is, she doesn’t care. Have you
seen the show Jerry Springer? Have you heard about the show
Jerry Springer, where they bring people and tell all their business and they go crazy? They get people like that because they have no
self-respect sometimes. I mean, I help her because I’m supposed
to. Not supposed to, but I feel it’s a godly thing to do to help her if
she needs help. Don’t worry about it – just be strong. You told me
to calm you. I… Put it like this: we have to be bigger and stronger.
We have to. At the end of the day, we have to be bigger and
stronger. We have to be. Just think: if you hadn’t have walked
through the door, I would have been the only one in here with colour,
and it has nothing to do with anything, but sometimes you feel… you
feel alone. You feel alone. But when I saw you, I felt better. No, I’m
okay now. I’m okay.”

  1. Jack
I hate her. [bleep] Jade Jack! Jack I don’t care. She annoys me [imitates Shilpa’s laugh]. Wanker.

Ofcom conclude that Jack said cunt not the p-word as reported Charming.

  1. Danielle
I just don’t like that. I don’t fucking trust her. Jo No, I don’t trust her. I don’t trust her – at all. (SHOTS IN BEDROOM OF SHILPA AND CAROLE) Danielle No buts ay - she’s a dog.

Ofcom conclude that Danielle called Shilpa a dog Charming.

  1. Jo
I said, maybe they cook them differently in India, might do mightn’t they? Danielle They probably fucking cook it for, like… Jo That’s why they’re all thin, because they’re sick all the time, because they’re ill. Danielle They’re ill off Shilpa’s cooking. Jo The thing that aggravates me with Shilpa is she fingers your food off your plate. You could see when she was picking the onions, just with her fingers, she’s just done it to Ian as well, she went ‘oh this chicken is fine’ [mimics Shilpa’s accent] and on his plate, started eating his chicken off-of his plate. That grates me. Danielle Do they do that in India, eat with their hands or is that in China? It’s in India isn’t it? Jo Not sure, I don’t like all that though. Danielle I don’t know where her fingers have been.

Ofcom deem that Jo was out of order - Jo's cousin's Indian husband deems that she was out of order - the comment was racist

  1. This was a comment by Danielle Lloyd in Celebrity Big Brother’s main show on
Monday 15 January at 21:00 about flicking dried thrush into Shilpa Shetty’s curry as follows: Cleo Let’s all put our pennies on the table and take a private jet to Monte Carlo where we can bag a millionaire and dry up our thrush … Danielle And then we shave it all off and put it in Shilpa’s curry

Ofcom conclude that Danielle is a crude biatch

  1. Oxogate

Ofcom conclude that Jade calling her Shilpa Poppadom was racist
Nerdity concludes that Jade/Danielle also do not know the difference between etiquette and elocution
Danielle
That was fucking fantastic, I loved it.
(Danielle and Jo laugh)
Jo
Got to say, made my day.
Danielle
That fucking brightened my day up, I’m telling you.
Jade
Actually I know when I’m at the end of my tether, my eyes are
filling up with water. How dare she say to me I need elocution
lessons and lie in my face, right there, right there? How dare
she?
Danielle
I think she should fuck off home (laughs). Does that mean that I
need elocution lessons, because she can’t understand what I
fucking say? She can’t even speak English properly anyway.

Danielle might have meant leave the house as opposed to go back where she came from but with the mention of English (whether in defence of perceived attack about elocution when in fact Shilpa had said etiquette ie charm school) Ofcom deemed that Danielle's comment was racist

Inappropriatefemale · 16/08/2019 00:32

I never watched that Celeb BB but I did watch In Therapy with Danielle Lloyd and the race thing was brought up, and like a pp said then DL really couldn’t see what she did wrong and her family bore the brunt of her behaviour, her mother was annoyed that DL couldn’t see the affect that it had on her and her father, DL isn’t exactly self aware, and In Therapy shows you this.

FullBodyNerdity · 16/08/2019 00:50

image.guardian.co.uk/sys-files/Media/documents/2007/05/24/CBBtranscript.pdf

The transcript above confirms that Jade brings up the p-word first claiming perhaps that is why Danielle is being told off /maybe said it under her breath (didn't happen).
Cleo claims she doesn't know what the p-word is (born in Rio but has Greek dad/English mum and came to UK as a child, not sure whether genuinely did not know or has had a sheltered life).
Jack helpfully tells her rhymes with tacky.
Later when playing the limerick game Jade intimates that she has a word she cannot use. It descends from there but they are alluding to Shilpa as tacky (see above). Jo tries to start a new limerick with girl from Bombay the next day but Jade shuts it down.
She has said Shilpa with the wrong racist surnames 3x by this point having been reminded of Shilpa's claim to fame comment.
They all get a bollocking and despite his youth, Jack shows a hint of awareness that he should exit the house early if the papers have reported the events.
