I think the whole thing was a sign of the times imo.
"Reality tv" had gone from being genuinely interesting and creating careers for people with real genuine talents (Pop Idol; Will Young, Xfactor; Lionna Lewis, Early bb series; Craig becoming a tv handyman/builder, Alison who is a funny tv personality on This Morning etc to name just a few examples.
Then a byproduct of all that became the "reality star" who was quite literally famous for being famous. Jade unfortunately fell into that category so when she was put into celebrity bb along with her mother and boyfriend the other celebrities, who were famous for actual careers, naturally took offence to the circus show that was unfolding.
The most surprising person was Joe O'Meary who was famous for being in a successful pop group and didn't fall into the "famous for being famous " category. Yet she joined in with the bullying with no real sense of what this could do for her career and that of her other bandmates. Jade was there because that was her "career" but Joe was there because she actually was a genuine "celebrity."
The whole thing was a ticking time bomb and was a sign of the times where it was "funny" to laugh at and vilify vulnerable people on bb and the x factor auditions. It was where the people on shows such as "Jeremy Kyle" were laughed at and mocked, like these underclass people were now there to be mocked, even though they were vulnerable and quite often suffered addictions and mental health issues.
In 2019 it's all come home to roost though with the JK show being cancelled due to the death of a guest and everyone now beginning to realise that these shows, where millions tuned in to watch as entertainment, have no place in 2019 Britain and are wondering how it was all allowed in the first place.
Reality TV started with good intentions. The first couple of bb series were interesting with normal people doing a social experiment. Shows such as Pop Idol and the X Factor had genuine talents auditioning to be singers. Then it all went to far and the circus began.
Jade Goody was a victim of that circus.
