Anyone watching the Jade Goody doc

I’m loving watching this. God love jade. So sad her life was tragically short. It’s such a blast from the past. Anyone else watching?

She was being racist and unlike most racists did apologise for it. Other people shouldn’t be trying to make excuses for her behaviour - there are none to be had. Yes it’s tragic that she died young but her comments to Shilpa were awful and there is absolutely no excusing them.

feelingverylazytoday · 15/08/2019 12:55

I never understood the fuss, she seemed to be made famous for being thick.
Well thats a big problem with our media, and BB played quite a big part in it. People become famous for being thick, or loud and aggressive, or getting so drunk they piss the bed or otherwise being rewarded for dubious behaviour. Not so much for being talented, hard working or intelligent.

DaisyChains6 · 15/08/2019 13:03

I think the whole thing was a sign of the times imo.

"Reality tv" had gone from being genuinely interesting and creating careers for people with real genuine talents (Pop Idol; Will Young, Xfactor; Lionna Lewis, Early bb series; Craig becoming a tv handyman/builder, Alison who is a funny tv personality on This Morning etc to name just a few examples.

Then a byproduct of all that became the "reality star" who was quite literally famous for being famous. Jade unfortunately fell into that category so when she was put into celebrity bb along with her mother and boyfriend the other celebrities, who were famous for actual careers, naturally took offence to the circus show that was unfolding.

The most surprising person was Joe O'Meary who was famous for being in a successful pop group and didn't fall into the "famous for being famous " category. Yet she joined in with the bullying with no real sense of what this could do for her career and that of her other bandmates. Jade was there because that was her "career" but Joe was there because she actually was a genuine "celebrity."

The whole thing was a ticking time bomb and was a sign of the times where it was "funny" to laugh at and vilify vulnerable people on bb and the x factor auditions. It was where the people on shows such as "Jeremy Kyle" were laughed at and mocked, like these underclass people were now there to be mocked, even though they were vulnerable and quite often suffered addictions and mental health issues.

In 2019 it's all come home to roost though with the JK show being cancelled due to the death of a guest and everyone now beginning to realise that these shows, where millions tuned in to watch as entertainment, have no place in 2019 Britain and are wondering how it was all allowed in the first place.

Reality TV started with good intentions. The first couple of bb series were interesting with normal people doing a social experiment. Shows such as Pop Idol and the X Factor had genuine talents auditioning to be singers. Then it all went to far and the circus began.

Jade Goody was a victim of that circus.

Inappropriatefemale · 15/08/2019 13:04

Shilpa did act superior to Jade as a pp said, I didn’t like Shilpa to be honest. Why is it racist to mimick someone’s accent?! To me that’s nothing to do with race and your just mimicking them as a person, why is that about race? If you were going to do an impression of someone then you would do their accent wherever they came from, if an English person mimicked another English persons voice then that’s okay but mimicking an Indian woman’s voice isn’t, I don’t get it.

Teddybear45 · 15/08/2019 13:06

It’s ironic because Shilpa Shetty became famous in India, less for her acting and more for her raunchy dance scenes (and private life). Similarly Aishwarya Rai is known more for her ‘blue eyes’ and love affairs (and then her marriage to a big name actor’s son) than her films. Actresses in India often only become popular before sleeping around - same as the UK. The only difference is that Shilpa and Aishwarya’s parents were middle - upper class and so they should have been able to progress without doing all of that.

NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady · 15/08/2019 13:08

She'd had laser treatment for abnormal cervical cells three times before she received a fourth letter. She ignored that one because she was scared. Also disillusioned/fed up at the idea of having to have it done for a fourth time on top of work and family commitments. I can understand her fear and ostrich response - sometimes you just cannot face what's happening.
As a newspaper article summed up, Jade was branded as an idiot then a racist then a saint.
The fuss was about an underdog coming good - the British love that cliche until they don't - tall poppies are cut down as fast as we build them up. She was famous for being thick in the same way Brian Belo was also nice but dim/never heard of Shakespeare etc and Joey Essex was celebrated as a dimwit. All with hearts of gold, natch.
Do I think all three played up to that? Of course. But with Jade it became a pygmalion story. She cleaned up well.
Did she represent a simmering underclass with racist undertones?

Inappropriatefemale · 15/08/2019 13:29

Ahh I see, and with Jade having said the horrible things about Shilpa before then it sounded racist, whereas if they had have been friends then Shilpa perhaps would have laughed, or not, she didn’t strike me as a woman who liked a laugh.

Jackiey was out of order for pretending that she couldn’t pronounce Shilpa’s name because it was easy to pronounce, I had an acquaintance that would pretend that she couldn’t understand certain people (mainly foreign people) when they spoke, and the rest of us could understand perfectly well, it was embarrassing to be seen with her.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 15/08/2019 13:33

but I don’t think Danielle was bright enough to consider the implications of her comment when she made it.

You’re being very generous. Danielle knew exactly what she was saying and the history of that phrase. That’s why she said it.

Inappropriatefemale · 15/08/2019 13:35

I think Danielle did get lots of problems with her comment because when she was on that C5 ‘In Therapy’ program then the Shilpa Shetty race thing was brought up and DLs mother said that she was so worried for her daughter as she was getting death threats etc, etc, over it, and DL was referred to as ‘the most hated person in Britain’, apparently!

PurpleDaisies · 15/08/2019 13:39

The tumour was so massive when she eventually saw a doctor it was protruding from her vagina.

Haworthia where have you got that information from?

NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady · 15/08/2019 13:43

I saw that. Her mum also said Danielle didn't seem to care about the effect on the rest of her family, still said she had done nuttin wrong (insert comedic Liverpool dey do don't dey dough accent here in answer to regional accents being okay) and that she had nothing to say sorry for.
Danielle lost two contracts and Teddy Sherringham.
She was less critical about BB editing (at the time of the furore had threatened to sue about her edit) when her ex appeared on the show - then it was on him (not incorrectly but what's good for the goose).

NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady · 15/08/2019 13:53

whereas if they had have been friends then Shilpa perhaps would have laughed perhaps - if it was a mutual taking the piss out of each other's accents/mannerisms/habits/foibles based on a genuine friendship and shared history on an equal footing: otherwise it just comes across as mocking/belittling/punching down/especially from Jo - a white woman who has privilege and has never experienced racism.
Jo's defence iirc was that family members laughed when she had done similar accent at gatherings: Her cousin Tonia's indian husband Dilip Drayan refused to stick up for Jo saying she needed a ticking off for some of the things she had said which he deemed were racist.

Haworthia · 15/08/2019 14:03

Haworthia where have you got that information from?

Read it somewhere, a very long time ago, so I can’t provide a source I’m afraid. But I’ve never forgotten it, because it was so shocking.

isitfridayyet1 · 15/08/2019 14:03

Gosh the apologists for racism on this thread are really shocking. It wasn't just about class they were clearly bullying Shilpa because she was different due to her accent and skin colour! Failure to see and acknowledge this is why racism is still so prevalent in the UK!

They did this knowingly whilst being filmed 24/7, it takes some deep rooted hatred to do that. Anyone who says 'well Jade was mixed race' really doesn't get it!

ginandwine · 15/08/2019 14:04

I think I'm the only one who has no idea who she is

PurpleDaisies · 15/08/2019 14:09

*Read it somewhere, a very long time ago, so I can’t provide a source I’m afraid. But I’ve never forgotten it, because it was so shocking.i

It’s almost certainly not true. You’ve probably got confused-what would have happened would have been when she was examined with a speculum tumour could be seen on her cervix but it really wouldn’t have been protruding from her vagina.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 15/08/2019 14:11

So it was, Feenie, Jade was the 'kebab'. Funny, tragic woman, I'm sorry that she had to leave her boys, that her life was so damn difficult.

sashh · 15/08/2019 14:13

She was too young to have a smear test then

She did HAVE smear tests. I had my first smear age 17, just because you are not in the age group for a screening smear does not mean you can't have a smear at all.

Haworthia · 15/08/2019 14:14

@PurpleDaisies No I wasn’t “confused”, I remember what I read. Whether it was misreported is up for debate, of course.

PurpleDaisies · 15/08/2019 14:15

Ok, you read something that was misreported. It isn’t true. You shouldn’t post stuff that isn’t accurate.

NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady · 15/08/2019 14:29

friday I mentioned Jade's biracial background only because, unlike Danielle and Jo, she had encountered racism as a child because of it. She was demonised as the ring leader - it got the show an extra million viewers overnight and sold papers - but the two white women got off lightly in comparison.
I do think there was a class divide. I do think there was a culture clash. I do think there was bullying. I do think there was racism.
And you cannot say 'I can't be a racist because...'
I have a father/relatives/a friend who is....
and still come out with racist statements/impressions/limericks/epithets.
But Jade got more criticism than the others because there was more money in it for the media. She deserved criticism but was easier to demonize/monetize than her confederates.

NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady · 15/08/2019 14:34

www.celebsnow.co.uk/latest-celebrity-news/jade-goody-my-tumour-was-falling-out-when-i-went-to-the-loo-215891

haworthia I suspect you read a headline like this.

NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady · 15/08/2019 14:54

And that was a misleading/dangerous headline imo. It led to many disparaging a sick woman and all sorts of accusations as well as misinformation about symptoms. The magazine were at fault for printing. It led to discussion but further criticism and speculation.
eg She might have had fibroids, she might have had a prolapse, she might have had irregular bleeding or uterine tumour discharge.
Irrespective, the reporting is woeful.
However given the 'Jade Goody Effect' wrt uptake of smear tests, her legacy was 500,000 more women getting screened (albeit the number is waning now) and this will no doubt inform part 3 next week.

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 15/08/2019 15:01

The whole thing is so sad. I thought Shilpa handled the bullying with such dignity and class. It is hard to believe it is 10 years since Jade has died. I don’t think Jo got off lightly but Danielle did.
