Anyone watching the Jade Goody doc

I’m loving watching this. God love jade. So sad her life was tragically short. It’s such a blast from the past. Anyone else watching?

You would think she would be more savvy from being in s club 7 about damage control and being careful about your public image

As the storm raged over allegations of racism on Celebrity Big Brother, Jade Goody was quizzed by panicked housemate Jo O'Meara about how press coverage of their comments might affect their careers."It doesn't matter, in all fairness," replied Goody. "There is always a way that you can justify it. I'll have a word with John." The remark would have passed most viewers by, but close media watchers realised she was talking about John Noel.

(guardian: Jan 2007)

She realized too late having been given warning by BB. Why she chose to style it out and talk about her cousin's Indian husband rather than make a proper apology, God knows.

Jack knew the way the wind was blowing early on - he said that if the press were running that story he'd want to leave the house immediately - he said that 3x in the diary room.

The producers lined up the psychologist Stephen to talk to the housemates in confidence after their first and final warnings.
In other words, calm them down, allay their fears, keep them in the house otherwise you might have had more walking and they had already lost 3 (Donny, Ken and Leo). So off camera, persuade them to stay.
I would have liked to have heard from the psych (Stephen not the body language woman) but I suspect they have client confidentiality and/or have signed a non disclosure.

Haworthia · 16/08/2019 14:27

There is no way in this earth jade and Jackie didn’t know what “pki” meant.*

Exactly. “They could just think "Paki" is short for Pakistani” my arse.

It’s a slur. Even for people like Jade and Jackiey, with their backgrounds and lack of education. It’s still a slur. Even if everyone around you uses it with impunity, it’s still understood to be a slur.

MrsMaudwatts · 16/08/2019 15:15

You'd be amazed at what middle class men can get away with compared to working class women

Yes!! You can even hold a top job as a man and say and do far worse than Jade. In fact it apparently helps men to climb the ladder.

Jade wasn't racist, she was poorly educated, and raised in a life/home where insults/lashing out is how you survive. She was treated appalling by the coke snorting, racist, sexist, right-wing media hypocrites.

It gave me a huge sense of rage at the time, and I feel even more angry about how she was treated now, given the openly racist, sexist lying, bullying, nasty people running the show at the moment. The hypocrisy is unreal.

Anyone would think we live in a patriarchy....

lyralalala · 16/08/2019 16:40

Watching that and seeing Jackiey you have to wonder how few scruples the producers had to put someone with get issues in such an environment.
And the same with the way they evicted her - they knew fine well that was going to tip the bubbling over. The fact the media went so strongly for Jade got them off the hook a bit I always felt.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 16/08/2019 18:21

Jade wasn't racist, she was poorly educated, and raised in a life/home where insults/lashing out is how you survive.

She was bullying shilpa and she chose racially based insults her weapon of choice. That makes it racism. If a Male bully chose to use sex based insults against a woman he would be a sexist. Regardless of his upbringing.

Can we please stop with the racism apologists now. It’s cringeworthy.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 16/08/2019 18:26

Agree.

When Jackie was talking about all the professionals she had to speak to before they deemed her fit to go in the house I thought they all need struck off. It was clear as day to anyone watching that Jackie should never have been in that house. Even as she was walking in she was screaming “oh my god”. She was massively out of her depth.

You also have to question how in depth those professionals were given that, according to the documentary, Jade surprised Jackiey and Jack about them all going in. So how long did they have?

And how unethical is it to put someone in who has been volunteered for it by someone else? That's a pressure to say "yes I'll do it" right away.

Inappropriatefemale · 16/08/2019 19:53

Even poorly educated people know what racist comments are, I think so anyway.

Inappropriatefemale · 16/08/2019 19:54

Jackiey thought she was going on holiday so no wonder she was saying “oh my god” as she went in, she was probably imaging lounging around a pool in a hot country and she got BB!

Inappropriatefemale · 16/08/2019 19:54

*imagining I meant.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 16/08/2019 20:03

Yes Jackiey was really thrown in at the deep end. It was sprung on her out of the blue. She had no idea it was happening until it was happening. How is that ethical? It simply isn’t.

mummylollypop · 16/08/2019 20:05

from what i read she did have a smear test which showed a normal cells. but because she was scared of the results never went back

JoySuckClub · 16/08/2019 20:11

She had already had abnormal cells removed three times lolly she got a 4th letter saying she needed laser removal again and ostriched it.

Sewrainbow · 16/08/2019 21:59

The problem with her is that she started a culture where being a bit thick and low class can make you a celebrity these days. No longer do you have to possess an actual talent, if you have either a decent body or a fowl mouth and are a bit thick into the bargain that will do.

This is a good point, why does society celebrate those people who lack intelligence and are proud of their ignorance? Reality tv has a lot to answer for and with the rise of social media I wonder what will become of the human race.

Jade was ignorant and racist and a bully. Her tragic early death doesn't erase that.

JoySuckClub · 16/08/2019 22:02

foul mouth Wink - fowl mouth sounds like a Sid the Sexist punchline.

Inappropriatefemale · 16/08/2019 22:41

Yeah Joey Essex and Sam Faiers are rich because of being thick, when I was at school then you were meant to be poor if you were thick, how times have changedHmm

FullBodyNerdity · 17/08/2019 05:12

Essex left school in 2006 having obtaining a U in Drama, a C in Art and a D in Wood Tech at GCSE. Ten years later, as part of a TV programme, he proudly added a D in GCSE General Studies, commenting that "I still don't really know what GCSE stands for.''

In fairness Joey did build his rep on a nice but dim persona. Clearly, having not passed drama, he must have had something or done some work on his acting skills as I haven't seen Towie but understood it was partially scripted (constructed reality?) which I would have thought involved learning lines or if not lines then storylines to do the equivalent of improv on camera. I could be wrong.
Talking of nice but dim - the Harry Enfield character was posh/rich but stupid. The Loadsamoney character was rich but obnoxious.
Money does not always bring Class. Class does not always mean Money or Intelligence.
The Secret Teacher has millionaires who had street smarts as opposed to book smarts.
It's better to be kind than to be clever or affluent in my book. I can forgive ignorance as long as people are kind. Nor do I begrudge anyone trying to pull themselves up or making a career for themselves as long as it's not at the expense of others.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/08/2019 07:18

To be fair I don’t think Sam Faiers is thick, not overly intelligent but not thick-
joey Essex can’t even tell the time ffs

Inappropriatefemale · 17/08/2019 09:14

Sam comes across pretty thick in The Mummy Diaries, not to mention a smug self obsessed woman, I used to really like her but then like lots of ‘celebs’ she got far too big for her boots, her man, Paul Knight isn’t exactly brains of Britain either!

Moomin8 · 21/08/2019 06:30

Watching this documentary and then watching and being reminded of the Shilpa Shetty fiasco unfolding made for extremely uncomfortable viewing.

Of course Jade, Jo and Daniele were racist. They were racist bullies. Their behaviour was absolutely shocking.

FoxFoxSierra · 21/08/2019 07:40

I thought it showed very well how disgusting and exploitative big brother was in how it manipulated the contestants into confrontation. I thought it was about so much more than race - yes some of Jade's comments were racist but you could see how Jade felt that Shilpa and others looked down on her because of her background and lack of education and that was what her outburst was about. I said at the time that Danielle was far far worse with her racist comments but she got away relatively easily compared with the others.

feelingverylazytoday · 21/08/2019 09:13

You'd be amazed at what middle class men can get away with compared with working class women
I can't recall any middle class men behaving in this manner on BB, so it's hardly relevant.
Anyone would think we live in a patriarchy...
That doesn't stop Jade, Jo and Danielle being responsible for their own behaviour.

Moomin8 · 21/08/2019 12:04

Yep racism has fuck all to do with the patriarchy and Danielle, Jo and Jade should all have been media savvy enough at that point to know what they were getting themselves into. No excuse.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 21/08/2019 21:32

Watching the third instalment just the most heartbreaking story- let down repeatedly by her crappy mother and then taken from her children

MrsMaudwatts · 21/08/2019 21:47

*'You'd be amazed at what middle class men can get away with compared with working class women'

I can't recall any middle class men behaving in this manner on BB, so it's hardly relevant.* …🤔 yeah, they're too busy fucking over actual countries at the minute.

Yep racism has fuck all to do with the patriarchy...

Really? 😂😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣
