Anyone watching the Jade Goody doc

I’m loving watching this. God love jade. So sad her life was tragically short. It’s such a blast from the past. Anyone else watching?

Likethebattle · 08/08/2019 02:39

She was racist and pretty vile. Yes it’s tragic that she died so young but could her death have been prevented by a smear test?

GrouchoMrx · 08/08/2019 03:03

While she had redeeming qualities, the fact remains she was a bully and a racist.

OpheliaTodd · 08/08/2019 03:11

Well it’s sad she died (as it is when anyone dies particularly if they leave small children) but I can’t understand how anyone could see her revolting treatment of Shilpa Shetty in the BB house and still like her. She was a ghastly woman. I mean Jo Sclub and Danielle Thing were also ghastly but I don’t see why someone like JG becomes acceptable just through dying.

OkPedro · 08/08/2019 03:24

Ouch so many nasty comments. I would never excuse Jade’s behaviour on the “celeb” bb she was on..However she was uneducated, her parents were beyond useless and jade got caught up in her celebrity status. If shilpa shetty got past it then?? also Danielle loyd and the s club 7 girl had no repurcussions Hmm
I found the journalist from the mirror trying to excuse his behaviour towards Jade Goody disgusting..How it was so hilarious the things he wrote about a 20 year old woman and it was ok then but not now?!
Listen I don’t condone racism but Jade Goody was used and abused by her family and the media

SouthWestmom · 08/08/2019 06:13

Isadora she did want to keep working - she wanted to save as much to leave to her boys. I remember that at the time.

slipperywhensparticus · 08/08/2019 06:24

There were two others involved in racism at that house only jade is blamed and the other two are still alive one has been all over tv but I'm guessing she wasnt as common as thick and as ill educated because people gloss over that

And how many more generations will pass before racism goes both ways? If it is unacceptable for us it should be unacceptable for all of us if I'm called white scum it should be as unacceptable as me referring to people as black scum the time for giving people a pass because their ancestors were oppressed by mine have passed zero tolerance is the only way

formerbabe · 08/08/2019 09:56

Her death was tragic but

Well it’s sad she died (as it is when anyone dies particularly if they leave small children) but

Yes it’s tragic that she died so young but

She was a mum of two children and died in her twenties...you don't need to add the word 'but' to your statements....it makes you sound heartless.

Glitterfisher · 08/08/2019 11:03

@Likethebattle - I'm not sure if I am reading you post correctly. Are you saying if she had a smear test then she would have possibly been ok? If I remember correctly she was under the age for having smear tests at the time.

Glitterfisher · 08/08/2019 11:07

I must say, I did not like her at all in the BB house but warmed to her a bit towards the end. Once I found out more about her past I felt desperately sorry for her even though I wasn't a huge fan, was there any wonder she sought out attention etc. It is tragic her dying so young, she adored her kids and was also fobbed off several times when she went to the doctors about her issues.

She worked up till her death and sold as many stories as possible to ensure she provided for her children after she was gone, I really admire her for that. It may not be how everyone would do it but I'm fairly sure most of us would do whatever we could to provide for any dependants we leave behind.

perrieryay · 08/08/2019 11:08

Her true colours came out in the BB house. She was a nasty bully - her disgraceful behaviour should not be disregarded purely because she is dead.

MaxNormal · 08/08/2019 11:12

She was a racist bully. It was tragic that she died so young.

Glitterfisher · 08/08/2019 11:26

I think calling her a racist bully is harsh actually. Maybe she was a racist and hid it by pleading ignorance or maybe she just made a terrible error in judgement, we actually don't really know. She was most definitely targeted more than the other 2 involved.

To be honest all of that is irrelevant now IMO as she is dead, she did her very best to provide for her boys at the end and to raise awareness of the smear tests, that should be her legacy. Also maybe to show how awful reality TV is for vulnerable and messed up young people and that the TV companies should not be targeting these people like they most certainly did when recruiting Jade. The press were vile, the way that journalist laughed about what he wrote was disgusting, also the phone hacking etc. They all did that for entertainment at the expense of a severely messed up young adult. They knew she would mess up, they pretty much admitted that in the documentary.

Dowser · 08/08/2019 13:09

I like neither Danielle Lloyd or jade for their nasty taunts to shills shetty
It was awful watching
I can’t remember the other girls name.

Pinkout · 08/08/2019 13:13

@dowser think it was Jo from S Club 7.

She didn’t seem the brightest but her death was beyond sad especially since it could so easily have been prevented by a smear test. I’d use her story to implore women to never forget their smear tests! So, so vital.

feelingverylazytoday · 08/08/2019 13:19

I don't know how anyone can deny she was racist. She was, and so were Danielle Lloyd and Jo O'Meara. Danielle Lloyd got let off very lightly, in my opinion, I guess the other one just kept a low profile afterwards. The main focus was on Jade because she came across as the loudest and most aggressive.
My opinion on her was that she became a celebrity during BB3 on the back of being uneducated and was able to monetize her celebrity, as a result she had no incentive to educate herself or to develop her personality, which eventually lead to the debacle on CBB.
Very sad that a young woman lost her life to cervical cancer though. Hopefully we will soon see a sharp decrease in cervical cancer thanks to Gardasil.

Glitterfisher · 08/08/2019 13:28

I don't believe any of us can either deny or confirm that she is a racist. She made a racist comment (or am I remembering it wrong). The way I remember it is that she made a comment but I felt that with the sort of person she was it could have quite easily been fat, ginger or ugly. I think she was uneducated and didn't think before she spoke. I may be completely wrong though.

I still feel it's irrelevant as she managed to do some good before she died regardless or whether she was a nice person or not.

SilverySurfer · 08/08/2019 13:30

I can't think of anything positive to say about her and couldn't stand her. Her racist and bullying behaviour on BB was shocking and cannot be excused because she was uneducated and ignorant. I never saw any evidence of her being a clever cookie.

feelingverylazytoday · 08/08/2019 13:57

she made a racist comment
She made more than one racist comment, and allowed other racist comments made by others (including her own partner) to go unchallenged. Makes her racist in my book.

Soola · 08/08/2019 14:03

She didn’t deserve to die so young but she was a pig ignorant and unpleasant person who paved the way for other dim witted twerps to be celebrated in society by way of reality tv shows and Instagram etc.

I don’t think her sons would have grown up with much stability with her around so they were fortunate that after her death their father has been a constant and positive influence in raising them well.

ShirleyPhallus · 08/08/2019 14:06

I’m pretty sure that the number of smear tests absolutely rocketed after she passed away. So something good did come out of her passing.

Unihorn · 08/08/2019 14:14

She always just seemed uneducated and ignorant to me rather than racist, and a bit of a bitchy girl, as many can be when they're young and in a group of similarly bitchy girls. I never thought she was as big a villain as she was painted by the awful media at the time.

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 08/08/2019 14:26

Saw it, thought it was well made and very sad how things panned out especially the phone hacking.
The Mean Girls bullying and racism was grim to watch - and no justification for it - but because Jade was the one who sold a headline she was also the one they went in for for the kill.
If you look at transcripts Danielle was more the ringleader and got off extremely lightly. Jo O'Meara, who only went in to the house to save losing her home she could no longer afford since the S-club days were behind her, claimed it ruined her life but was still denying her actions a week after. Danielle talked about suing wrt the edit: the problem is, yes, you can and will be edited as goodie or baddie but they cannot edit in a racist furore unless you actually say things that are indeed racist.
It gave Shilpa the win however as the GBP tried desperately to make up for the shit she had received.
It will be very interesting how they deal with it all next Wednesday and whether the other participants are interviewed.
Jade was a tall poppy the tabloids were happy to cut down but this was self-sabotage, they must have been creaming themselves over the scandal. Complete hypocrisy.
A smear test might have saved Jade and she did indeed start campaigning/getting the message across to younger girls - iirc the take up of screening went up in the wake of her death.

I wish people would stop implying that Jade Goody didn't go for her smear tests - she did. In fact she had abnormal cells treated 3 times, the first time being when she was 15 I believe. She had also had lots of symptoms including bleeding which she sought help for on and off for a few years but no diagnosis was made. There is a timeline of Jade's illness and symptoms if you google it. Yes the 4th time she had abnormal cells she didn't go back because she was terrified. Would it have made any difference in the end? Actually we don't know that, some people just have terrible DNA and are destined to get cancer and it sounded like she'd been having problems for years.
All this " a simple smear would have saved her" sounds very inaccurate, and it also sounds like blaming her for the cancer, and I don't like that one bit.
