Anyone watching the Jade Goody doc

I’m loving watching this. God love jade. So sad her life was tragically short. It’s such a blast from the past. Anyone else watching?

Jo O’Meara is back touring again with S Club 3. Not a joke.

Freefrops · 14/08/2019 22:58

Reach for the Starbucks
Climb every Mountain Warehouse
Reach for the Starbucks
Blah blah

I think the friction between Jade etc and Shilpa was as much about class as about race. I remember that Shilpa started off by adopting a very superior, condescending attitude towards Jade, who then retaliated in turn as soon as she felt 'backed up' by her girl gang. None of them covered themselves in glory.

I experienced very similar treatment as a (white) teenager from a privately educated background at a swimming club with (white) girls from a local state school. I had met one of the girls socially before and had lorded it over her a bit (to my shame). When I met her again, at the club, she had her gang of friends to support her and boy, did she get her revenge.

The racism is there as well, but I think the class jealousy/resentment is the more defining feature in the dynamic.

Feenie · 15/08/2019 08:58

I haven't watched the documentary but used to love BB back in the day and saw Jade's antics with the wine bottle

That was Kinga.

HollysTeflonSeptum · 15/08/2019 09:12

Still not entirely sure why JG with all her faults got the brunt of it while the vile snickering O’Meara and Lloyd seemingly got away with it.

Acting like thick bullies in their 20s with all the good life that went with their careers. They must be so embarrassed reliving that footage, I hope so. Age has nothing to do with it, you’re either a bigot and xenophobe or you’re not.

The class aspect was another trigger yes but related: they were unable correlate the two.

HollysTeflonSeptum · 15/08/2019 09:22

*to correlate

Phimma · 15/08/2019 09:31

I too believe it was classism not racism.

BloomingHydrangea · 15/08/2019 09:37

Yes it’s tragic that she died so young but could her death have been prevented by a smear test?

She was too young to have a smear test then,

sixnearlyseven · 15/08/2019 09:38

Bet Danielle Lloyd is hating this being dragged up lol

HollysTeflonSeptum · 15/08/2019 09:50

Good.

I’m pretty sure when she said Shilpah should fuck off home that wasn’t about class hate.

She would start with the royals if that were the case.

Phimma · 15/08/2019 09:50

The royals weren't in the bb house though were they.

HollysTeflonSeptum · 15/08/2019 09:57

Are you deliberately missing the point Phimma?

She didn’t mention her leaving the house but the country. It wasn’t about who was in the house.

NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady · 15/08/2019 10:14

Danielle and Jo were often worse than Jade.
Danielle has some kind of deal though going on with the Fail I reckon...yesterday she diverted attention by a placed story about her mum's 60th birthday and last week by talking about miscarriage. Both are likely to have been fed to the press in return for not rehashing her involvement otherwise there'd be some kind of Danielle's reaction to doc story. She ended up placing 5th in the sorry debacle.

Phimma · 15/08/2019 10:59

@HollysTeflonSeptum
Not missing the point.
Shilpa was the target not the royals

Why bring them into it?

Hairsprayqueeen · 15/08/2019 11:26

Tragic for any child to grow up without their mother, however the boys do seem to have benefitted from the stable, loving environment their father has provided. I wonder whether things would have been different for them.. .

^ That is fucking disgusting.

NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady · 15/08/2019 11:34

That's not a great comment, no but I assume that it is more of an indictment of Jack/Jackiey and the tabloid vultures circling around Jade more than it is about Jade herself. She wanted private school for them but would they have had privacy or would they have become part of the circus? Katie Price's children became reality TV fodder before Peter Andre dialled it back somewhat.

Haworthia · 15/08/2019 11:35

To clarify the “smear test” thing: IIRC she’d had abnormal cells treated more than once. Then she should have had the procedure again but didn’t attend. Then she had symptoms which she ignored.

The tumour was so massive when she eventually saw a doctor it was protruding from her vagina. I’m sorry that’s graphic, but there you go. So it’s fair to say that she wouldn’t have died if she’d seen a doctor much, much earlier (or, indeed, had the abnormal cells treated in the first place).

ChechezLaVache · 15/08/2019 11:37

Just playing devil’s advocate re Danielle telling Shilpa to ‘go back to her country’: Shilpa was a visitor from another country (India) rather than an immigrant, or a British person with Indian ancestry. She was talking a lot in the house about her high profile and lifestyle back in her own country, and it may have been that Danielle was alluding to that. If Shilpa had been a (white) French or Spanish actress, for example, with similar mannerisms and attitudes, Danielle and the others would presumably have been equally intimidated by her and could easily have made the same comment - ‘go back to your country’ - but it wouldn’t have been racism.

Of course, the phrase has horrible racist connotations because it has been previously said to people who are not visitors, but citizens - but I don’t think Danielle was bright enough to consider the implications of her comment when she made it.

I still think that class, rather than race, was the real issue at play

NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady · 15/08/2019 11:45

The royals weren't in the bb house though were they.

No but Shilpa was being sold as Bollywood Royalty hence Jade calling her a princess. The whole master-servant was supposed to create a class divide not a racial one (the producers also knew how it would have looked casting Shilpa and Jermaine in a servant role).
On a lighter note let's not forget Jermaine's son (with his younger brother's babymama yikes!) is called Crown Jermajesty Wink

So you had Showbiz Royalty with staff (Shilpa said she had 3 servants, 3 chauffeurs, hairdresser, make up artist and Man Friday on her staff) mixed with the Goody Family...being waited on by those with chips on their shoulders at the audacity of the whole set-up cough Leo Sayer cough . The Perfect Storm.

Haworthia · 15/08/2019 11:45

I don’t think there’s any need to play devil’s advocate with a statement like “go back to your own country”. Everyone knows what that means. It’s racism 101.

NotVeryMatureForAnOldLady · 15/08/2019 11:51

Race came into play as soon as Jo started doing impressions of Shilpa's accent imho.
Given that she later claimed to have indian relatives I still can't believe she did that.
Jade being bi-racial herself was completely ignored by media at the time but her mother's mispronunciation of Shilpa's name and Jade making up lowest common denominator surnames made them both look like bigots again imho.

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2019 12:32

Jackie budden made a hoha of Shilpas name as soon as she walked in set the tone tbh it was never going to end well and Jade got the brunt of it .

sashh · 15/08/2019 12:36

All this " a simple smear would have saved her" sounds very inaccurate, and it also sounds like blaming her for the cancer, and I don't like that one bit.

She said she didn't know that a smear test had anything to do with cancer. I find that difficult to believe because she was treated as a PP said, so you would think a HCP would have explained to her what the treatment was for.

I know she wasn't the most intelligent person but you would have to be a special kind of dumb to not know why you have had a treatment.

I never understood the fuss, she seemed to be made famous for being thick.

DaisyChains6 · 15/08/2019 12:42

Does anyone else think jades dark short haircut made her look even harsher in celebrity bb?

When she was in series 3 off bb originally, her long blond hair made her look sweet and a bit dumb (in a playful way.) Her dark short hair in celebrity bb made her look hard as nails and added to the bully persona to me.

feelingverylazytoday · 15/08/2019 12:45

I forgot the servant thing. Of course BB deliberately sets up tension, Jade should have been aware of that because they did a similar thing in the series she was in, with the rich/poor divide. Of course the golden rule is, as John McCirrick said, never ever let it get personal, let alone racial. Even though he and Lisa L'Anson didn't get along they kept it civil.
I do think the producers have some responsibility though, they could have put a stop to it much earlier, they were aware of the reactions outside the house, they could have taken certain people into the diary room and asked them to examine their behaviour. Allowing it to continue was condoning and enabling it for the sake of TV ratings.
