Can we have a Star Trek thread?

Been binge watching DS9 mostly. I love Star Trek, but some things make me wonder.,

Considering they must have had long shifts, I wonder what breaks they got.

And how could they actually breed with other species. Was that actually ever explained?

Anyone got a favourite/worst species?

My worst is the Skreea (sp?) from a DS9 ep. So ungrateful and wanted to claim Bajor as their own. Although there are other god awful species too.

I wonder why they've never done Star Trek: The Musical.

Speaking of Harry Kim. I pity him really, never promoted from Ensign, even Nog (The only Ferenghi in Starfleet) was promoted before him.

@TaliZorahVasNormandy, what a brilliant idea! Someone needs to make a musical.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/08/2019 21:14

I would love to see a musical. I'll even write the bastard if it meant getting it done.

Go for it, Tali Grin

You need the infamous musical Spock In Manacles. First production started one of our finest literary sf novelists as Spock.

My partner absolutely loves Star Trek, and I have to admit I haven't been a huge fan up until now Blush I really want to give them a go though, so bookmarking this thread. He did correctly guess that I would enjoy the episode with the Tribbles in though :D

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 07/08/2019 23:26

@TaliZorahVasNormandy I thorougly agree, Picard is superior and despite his Original!Kirk worship, DP still takes his tea as Earl Grey, hot. (I would chose the Pine!Kirk over any other captain for aesthetic reasons Grin)
Janeway is on my list of amazing sci-fi/fantasy heroines who kicked arse and took names. Janeway, Buffy, Ripley and Sarah Conner were my role models...and still are!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/08/2019 23:34

I just watched Wrath of Khan again and Spock's death still feels like a death of a close friend.

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 08/08/2019 07:49

The Wrath of Khan is awesome, Kirk and Khans amazing overacting, Spock sacrificing himself at the end (sniff). Genesis Kirks old flame.

cropcirclesinthefields · 08/08/2019 08:03

I grew up watching TNG my older sister is a big fan of Riker. I did like DS9 but only once they got the defiant and sisko looses his hair, it had some really good writing and very poignant storyline. DS9 does have the sexiest doctor, there is just something about Bashir 😍

I adored Voyager more though, Janeway is a big role model being the first ST captain. Although they did rush the ending I mean what happens when they get home? And don't get me started on the whole Seven and Chakotay thing WTF where they thinking?

Never got into Enterprise and Discovery but in really looking forward to Picard.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 08/08/2019 09:18

Yes, Captain Janeway is amazing, a brilliant captain. The episode where Janeway and Chakotay were stranded on a planet and nearly got together was lovely. Nope, I agree. Not Seven and Chakotay.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 08/08/2019 10:07

The whole Seven and Chakotay thing ruined the later series of Voyager.

Oh WoK is one of those films we'll have on for decent background noise on a Sunday, and then suddenly find you've all stopped what you're doing and are watching as Spock's stuck in that tube dying with Kirk rushing to get to his friend's side. Nothing he can do. Their hands against the glass ...... :( Waaaaaaaaaa !

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 08/08/2019 14:32

Dont Laiste, it still gets me right in the heart.

Not watched any recently, but I had a massive crush on Dr Bashir when I was in my teens! Blush

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 08/08/2019 17:10

Dr Bashir was gorgeous. Even now Alexander Siddig is hot older guy.

Seven and Chakotay was a poor match. He was so dull. They should've left it be. She would've been perfect for Spock if the timeline had been different.

It's a common theme though when series come to an end (usually faster than planned)
CSI New York- Flack suddenly finds the love of his life a couple of episodes before the end. Same with Jason Mimoa's character in Star Gate Atlantis. Some random crew member suddenly appears to be his love interest before the finale.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 09/08/2019 08:35

I'm old enough to have watched TOS first time round. I've loved TNG, Voyager and Enterprise - never got into DS9 and I am struggling to get very far with Discovery. I can't wait for Picard - the trailer looks amazing. Several years ago, dh gave me a copy of Gene Roddenberry's biography which is really the story of how Star Trek came to be.
I have a couple of brilliant books that are basically episodeguides for TNG and Voyager - they also give a real insight into Roddenberry's vision and ideals for the Trek universe.
My final act of geekdom, is to ask whether anybody else collected The Star Trek Fact Files and if so, how far did you get? I think I got to around number 200, but would have to go into the loft to check.

Can we have a Star Trek thread?
51Pegasusb · 09/08/2019 08:35

How has it taken me a week to see this thread !

I was a teen in the late 80's early 90's so was a huge TNG fan, a HUGE fan, yes wed 6pm was the time, my best friend and I took it in turns to watch it at each others house, she was totally in love with Data, I had a thing for Riker !
A few years later I was doing an internship in the US, so watched the last ever episodes "All Good things parts 1 and 2" of TNG when it aired, I sobbed my heart out.. Then came home to the UK and watched it again with my friend when it finally aired in the UK a year later or so.
Also a fan of DS9 which took me a good series to get into, but once the worm hole and the Dominion got involved it was bloody brilliant ! Dax was an interesting character idea. Loved Quark and Garak . Not so sure about Odo.
Voyager again took me a while to get into but, agree with a pp Kate Mulgrew is a great actress, I though at one point she had a thing with Q but I'm not sure. I also liked the Q character a lot.

I adore Scott Bacula ( Quantum Leap) but I did not enjoy Enterprise.
I'm up and down with Discovery right now, Jason Issacs nearly killed me with his American accent, why did they do that ?
me.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 09/08/2019 10:35

I had the Star Trek fact files. I binned them a few house moves ago.

Used to annoy me as half the time I picked then up from newsagents the back couple of pages would be missing. There was also only meant to be a set amount and they started expanding it so I gave up. Defo had around 200.
Used to love the mail order sci fi magazine that came with them sometimes. I ordered a glow in the dark doormat with an alien head on that said "welcome all species" Grin

SciFiScream · 09/08/2019 13:29

I think I have all the Star Trek face files! In the attic. I've probably filed their thirds. Still have all the covers. Still have some of the addendum stickers to fix.

I don't want them anymore but don't know what to do with them and can't really face binning them.

MissConductUS · 09/08/2019 15:03

Thanks to this bloody thread I am now binge watching Voyager and DS9 at the same time, and have googled the trailer for the Picard movie, which I cannot watch as I am at work. Smile

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 09/08/2019 16:28

I apologise miss for what I have inflicted upon you Grin

I looked up Alexander Siddig. Yes indeed, what a lovely-looking man.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 10/08/2019 22:36

Apparently Picard has had several reshoots because the initial screenings were so bad.
