What scent did your mum wear?

Mine wore l'Air du Temps when I was little. The scent of it takes me straight back to childhood.

I must ask the DC if there's any particular perfume that I wore that they associate with me.

Estee Lauder Youth Dew for years and years. Then when I was in my teens she switched to Byzance. After she died when I was 21 for years after if I ever smelt anyone wearing either it would leave me reeling a bit.

My dad wore an aftershave called Balafre but only when he was going out, whereas mum wore perfume every day.

I've never had a signature scent. I did wear Obsession for years, and then Cartier Must but it's so expensive I'm currently wearing a £10 perfume from M&S!

Avons Far Away. She loved it and wore it every day. I have the last bottle she had and every now and again i take it out and spray a bit and think about her.

@ValleyoftheHorses

I scanned the thread and am SO glad to find somebody else mention blue grass! I LOVE smelling it, instant and strong link with mum even though she only wears it for occasions.

She loves Lavender so the smell or sight of that reminds me of her too, though not nearly as much as the perfume she wears much less often. Isn't it strange!

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 20/06/2019 07:56

L’air du temps hit currently she has one which is foul. Horrible and doesn’t smell like her at all

ElfrideSwancourt · 20/06/2019 07:58

My beloved and very much missed MIL wore Eden - sometimes I sniff it in Boots and then cry v embarrassing. I might buy a small bottle just to smell occasionally.

Commencaal · 20/06/2019 07:58

Tabu Dana. Lovely but you only need a bit. I bought a bottle recently to help me through a tough time.

mrsjackrussell · 20/06/2019 08:00

Always private collection by Estee Lauder.

RedForShort · 20/06/2019 08:01

Chanel Cristalle or No 5

Don't wear perfume that often my self so doubt my children associate one with me.

VenusClapTrap · 20/06/2019 08:08

When I was little she wore Chanel No. 5. Different ones through the years, but she kept going back to the Aqua Allegoria series by Guerlain, so those are very evocative now.

A couple of years ago MIL bought me Chanel No. 5 for Christmas. I wore it out of duty, but I found it disturbing, in a weird combination of comforting and distressing.

BrokenWing · 20/06/2019 08:08

Ysatis

She only wore when going out which wasn't often, but as teens/young adults we bought her it and she was always very happy to receive it every birthday and mothers day (5 kids so could be 2-3 bottles of the stuff). Found out in my mid 20s she had a cupboard full of it!!!

MrsMoastyToasty · 20/06/2019 08:08

DM wears a variety of perfumes.
DGM wore Charlie or Tweed.
DF wore Old Spice and 20 Benson and Hedges.

suckonthatmaureen · 20/06/2019 08:08

34 boulevard saint germain by diptyque
She also loves yardley English Fern, but they discontinued it ☹️

omione · 20/06/2019 08:13

Youth dew or Evening in Paris. I still spray a paper tissue with Youth dew and keep it in my handbag.

Justincase87 · 20/06/2019 08:16

My mum used to wear a really strong perfume when she was going out - I can't remember what it was called but it was in a tall almost rectangular bottle with a red lid and was really dark in colour - it still reminds me of being left with a babysitter when she and dad went out! (If anyone has any ideas what it was called...?) She also wore Anaïs Anais. My dad wears Jean Paul Gautier - I'm married now but used to weird me out if I dated someone wearing if! I have a really strong scent memory and different smells really take me back to certain moments.

Borntobeamum · 20/06/2019 08:21

My mum wore Worth 'Je Revien' when I was little. When I was 2, I was Hospitalises fir 13 months. It was the mid 60's so parents were allowed to visit, but only at strict visiting times. Mum was always there first and would look through the port hole of the ward door and wave so I know she was there.
She's rub her wrist on my starched pillow so I could continue to smell her her perfume during the night.
I find smells evoke so many memories for me.
Lovely thread.

Babdoc · 20/06/2019 08:22

My narcissistic abusive mother wore Estée Lauder Youth Dew. The pungent cloying stink clung to everything - we had to throw out all her possessions after she died, and to this day I have to walk out of shops if another customer is wearing it.
I had to turn down a perfectly good candidate for my children’s nanny because she wore the stuff- I couldn’t get her out of the house fast enough, I was trying not to retch.
My DD gets migraines triggered by stinky musk based perfumes. I wear Tommy Hilfiger male aftershave, which is nice and light. I suppose that’s what the DDs will remember when I’m dead - although I hope not with hatred and nausea!

Rive gauche by ysl

It's one my favourite smells in the entire world

flumpybear · 20/06/2019 08:26

@Alabasterangel6 - aahhh that's lovely!! My mum would have been 72 if she was still alive so wonder if it was the perfume of choice for special occasions back then lol

BillywigSting · 20/06/2019 08:27

My dad on the other hand, lovely as he is in all other respects, is a bit of a soap dodger so he'd mostly smell of cigarette smoke and whatever unpleasant chemicals he had been working with that day

gower4 · 20/06/2019 08:28

Paris YSL

My grandma wore Obsession. There happened to be a tester bottle on the counter in Superdrug a few weeks ago, so I had a sniff. Imagine my embarrassment at almost bursting into tears there and then on an ordinary Tuesday

Bezalelle · 20/06/2019 08:52

Loulou by Cacharel, and a Paloma Picasso perfume in a black bottle. In later life she wears Lolita Lempicka and Clinique Aromatics Elixir.

CaptainHammer · 20/06/2019 08:54

YSL Rive Gauche

clairethewitch70 · 20/06/2019 09:04

I can't remember the smell but I can remember the perfume was purple colour in a clear bottle. Any ideas? GM wore it

pancaketits · 20/06/2019 09:09
