Do you iron?

Doonut84 · 14/03/2019 20:43

We don’t do any ironing except for the odd formal item. I probably haven’t used my iron for 6 months.

My DM is very shocked by this.

Do you iron & what age bracket are you? I’m in my 30s

How do you manage to not have to iron T-shirts and shirts.
I rarely use the tumble dryer as it's so expensive. I hang them on hangers to dry but they still look wrinkled.
Tips please.

Turquoisetamborine · 15/03/2019 06:33

I was brought up not to iron. My mother rarely ironed. Her MIL ironed the school uniforms etc for her.

My H still irons most days but he has higher standards than me. I’m 39.

legolimb · 15/03/2019 06:40

Yes. At least twice a week.

DH wears shirts for work. DS used to wear school shirts.

I didn't have a tumble drier for years ta d now that i do I don't use it often. So clothes stay creased if u don't iron.

Quite enjoy it whilst watching TV.

Age 51

RhinestoneCowgirl · 15/03/2019 06:44

I don't iron often. Sometimes I iron my work clothes if they look particularly crumpled (not that they are that smart in any case). Don't iron school uniform.

DH irons a shirt every day for work, it's part of his morning routine.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 15/03/2019 06:45

Oh, and we're both early 40s

ALannisterInDebt · 15/03/2019 06:47

Nope, I blast items in the tumble dryer and fold carefully.

Husband irons his own work shirts.

I'm in my 40's

YouBoggleMyMind · 15/03/2019 06:49

No, only if it's formal stuff. I'm 31.

ALannisterInDebt · 15/03/2019 06:51

Btw items don't crease in the tumble dryer if you take them out warm and fold immediately.

I have heard great things about hand held streamers...which I plan to investigate

GrumpyOldMare · 15/03/2019 07:06

*GrumpyOldMare

Your post reminded me of Mrs Doyle when Father Ted bought her a tea making machine. She hated it and sobotaged it so she could go back to doing it herself...

I just think ironing is such a waste of life (apart from the odd thing like linen clothes, work shirts that need to look neat etc.) Ironing socks and tea towels is frankly bonkers! Don’t you have a single other thing to do in life? Read a book? Go for a walk? Chat with a friend*

I don't iron socks!
I like ironed tea towels, looks much tidier in the kitchen.
I read....alot.
Likewise going for a walk.
I often chat with friends.
I'm not ironing 24/7!
I actually enjoy ironing and certainly don't think of it as ''such a waste of life'',it's a job that needs to be done.

seeingdots · 15/03/2019 07:09

Nope not generally. I iron the odd thing when necessary. DH does more but just work clothes and not shirts during the winter when he can hide them under a jumper. We're 30s.

I think it makes my MIL sad that DC's clothes aren't ironed.

whiskeysourpuss · 15/03/2019 07:12

I iron everything except towels, underwear & some pj's. 95% of my clothes can't go in the dryer but I still iron the few things that do.

I couldn't wear unironed clothes as I wouldn't feel comfortable in them - but I am aware that my laundry ritual is somewhat peculiar to others especially my sorting system which generates around 8/9 different loads... however, in 14 years my kids have never had a white shirt go grey which is a complaint all my friends who don't sort like I do have.

PeanuttyButter · 15/03/2019 07:18

Yes I iron. I buy clothes that don't need ironing so 95% of the ironing is DHs stuff. Dread a Sunday afternoon but feel quite satisfied once it's all done

needthisthread · 15/03/2019 07:26

I don't really understand the 'life is too short for ironing' sentiment, as if people are doing some serious soul searching adventure instead of ironing!

I have to iron. School shorts out of the dryer do not look the same as a nicely ironed shirt. They just don't. A lot of things I used to iron I don't anymore; but shirts, they look scruffy without an iron.

legolimb · 15/03/2019 07:26

I have also recently taken to nicer bedding - which is worth ironing as it is plain white and has a higher cotton content.

It's quite a long task manhandling a superking duvet cover on an ironing board (I guess professional laundries use a pressing machine) but does look much better.

longhaulstress · 15/03/2019 07:27

Don’t iron in the winter as our winter stuff doesn’t need it (jumpers, jeans, tracksuits, leggings).
Summer however most of our t-shirts/summer dresses do need an iron with them being cotton.
Am mid 30’s.

TapasForTwo · 15/03/2019 07:31

The MN competitive non ironing threads come up regularly. I iron clothes that need ironing, and don't iron clothes that don't.

Tumble drying and line drying doesn't get rid of the creases on some of my work shirts and dresses, and I don't like looking scruffy.

Besides, creased clothes will make my lined faced look even more lined Grin

Pascha · 15/03/2019 07:32

I iron most things. I quite enjoy it really.

On occasion I don't such as this morning the kids are wearing red and ds1's favourite red top has come straight out of the tumble dryer [insert unorganised emoji here]. I'm looking at it, it's creased just a bit. He won't take it off though so I'm trusting body heat will smooth it down and trying to ignore the 'iron it' itch...

TapasForTwo · 15/03/2019 07:32

Am 60 BTW and prefer to wear natural fibres.

Boom76 · 15/03/2019 07:35

I iron as I hate wrinkly clothes. I work with 2 people who don’t iron. I can tell they don’t as it’s obvious.

Fuzzywuzzyface · 15/03/2019 07:39

49 and iron everything bar underwear.. i have never successfully taken anything out of the tumble dryer that hasn't needed a quick press!! I love getting into a bed where the bed linen has been laundered and ironed!!

WhoNose21 · 15/03/2019 07:44

Late 20’s with one ds, don’t even own an iron.

greenelephantscarf · 15/03/2019 08:12

only things that need it.
I mostly have clothes that don't need ironing (jersey type fabric, jeans)

Snog · 15/03/2019 08:58

Our household has really high standards on laundry and cooking.
Cleaning, not so much Blush

Oliversmumsarmy · 15/03/2019 09:03

Probably as old as your dm op.

I don’t iron.

I have an iron for emergencies but everything goes in the tumble dryer and just folded when they come out and dps work shirts are sent to the launderette to be washed and ironed.

Hate ironing so much.

amusedbush · 15/03/2019 09:05

Nope, life is too short. I tumble dry my clothes.

My mum does nothing but moan about the amount of time she spends ironing but neither she, my dad or my brother wears anything that needs to be ironed Confused
