Do you iron?

We don’t do any ironing except for the odd formal item. I probably haven’t used my iron for 6 months.

My DM is very shocked by this.

Do you iron & what age bracket are you? I’m in my 30s

Dh does (now, I did it for years but he's taken over recently and I'm grateful). Uniforms for dc and me, shirts/trousers for work for him. That's pretty much it though, not teatowels or undies or anything like that.
Dh does it to music, I used to do it watching television - something we'd be doing anyway so no dramas. Takes an hour, maybe 2 tops.
I'm afraid I (inwardly) eyeroll at people who 'don't have the time' or 'have far more important things to do', and I definitely judge people who are obviously creasey. No need.

afrikat · 16/03/2019 13:01

I'm 38 and have probably used an iron 5 times in my life, not used it for years though. My DH irons every couple of months when he has a few shirts that need doing

TapasForTwo · 16/03/2019 13:20

It's an MN badge of honour not to iron don't you know Cockadoodledooo Grin

I happily remain in the minority of not wanting to look creased.

Doingthedo · 16/03/2019 13:49

Sold my iron and ironing board at a car boot sale about 15 years ago....only own a travel iron for emergencies (wedding/funerals). Shake and fold or tumble dry straight out of washer, then there's no need!

Fucket · 16/03/2019 13:54

DH does the ironing, along with cleaning the kitchen and hoovering. It’s one of the reasons why I still love him.

greenpop21 · 16/03/2019 15:29

Ironed clothes look better. Until I can afford a magical de-creaser, I'll be ironing. Much rather iron than clean the loo tbh!

hazeyjane · 16/03/2019 15:51

I can't stand wearing creased clothes, it looks so scruffy.

Ah, there's the rub....I am scruffy. If I ironed, I'd still look like a jumble sale, just one with ironed clothes.

luckylavender · 16/03/2019 16:20

Mid 50s, yes I iron a lot. Can't imagine how not to.

Oliversmumsarmy · 17/03/2019 11:17

Late 50s and can’t imagine why anyone would iron.

We also don’t wear creased clothes

Take out of the tumble driver and smooth down and fold or hang up

Zoflorabore · 17/03/2019 11:21

41, i iron everything including tea towels, flannels, kids underwear, all bedding.

My mum has always been the same so I think that's why I'm like this plus I have OCD and couldn't put stuff away creased ( I do have a dryer and use it a lot )

userxx · 17/03/2019 11:24

You iron flannels 😱. Wow. Do flannels even get creased.

kimlo · 17/03/2019 11:27

30's and I iron every sunday.

Nope! I've ironed twice in the 14yrs I've had my own place. My mum never ironed either - she used to put my dads shirts under the mattress on top of the divan base and lay on the bed - worked a treat and my dad never knew she didn't iron 😄.

TheLastPharl · 17/03/2019 12:14

I grew up with a DM who would always be furious on ironing day. It taught me ironing isn’t worth the hassle...

Whathappenedtothelego · 17/03/2019 12:21

I love the transformation from a mountain of creased clothes to neat piles of ironed clothes.
It makes me feel like I've accomplished something.
And you can listen to podcasts while you do it.

I have a really big ironing board and a steam iron, which makes everything much quicker.

thecatneuterer · 17/03/2019 12:23

Mid 50s. I maybe iron twice a year. Mostly I just buy stuff that doesn't need ironing. I hardly own anything, apart from knitwear, that doesn't contain Lycra.

SparklySneakers · 17/03/2019 12:25

Hell no.

SparklySneakers · 17/03/2019 12:26

Apart from the linen tablecloth and napkins just before they go on the table for special dinners

TapasForTwo · 17/03/2019 13:15

I would like one of these magical MN washing machines and tumble dryers that never produce creased clothes Grin

I wear shirts occasionally, and no amount of tumble drying or line hanging produces as good a finish as ironing them.

TapasForTwo · 17/03/2019 13:18

I'm not complaining BTW because I don't mind ironing. I don't iron much, just the clothes that need it.

Zoflorabore · 17/03/2019 13:44

I think that flannels do get creased but I iron them, takes seconds, and then roll them up and put them in a basket looking all pretty ( sort of defeats the object I suppose! )
I have many weird ways but to me they are normal.
I must be a nightmare to live with.

greenpop21 · 17/03/2019 20:10

This. Plus I try not to use my tumble dryer and line dry outside or inside on a clothes horse or my pinky line strung across the utility room. Only sweatpants and hoodies and lycra stretchy tops don't need ironing in my experience. I have a few jersey dresses that if hung correctly won't need an iron but most other stuff looks and feels better ironed.

myidentitymycrisis · 17/03/2019 20:22

I took up ironing in my 40's. before that i just folded or ironed for special occasions.
I like the way it looks and sits so neatly and I only do it when I have time.

myidentitymycrisis · 17/03/2019 20:24

I would never iron a towel or bed sheet, but I do have a linen tablecloth that gets ironed at christmas
