Unwritten rules of the road

Just been out driving and it reminds me of the unwritten driving rules that many seem to follow. So these are -

  • It is fine to stop on a double yellow as long as you put your hazards on
  • It is fine to park somewhere illegal as long as it is "only for a minute"
  • It is fine to speed if you are "in a hurry"

  • if you drive a BMW then you can do whatever you want
afrikat · 17/12/2018 16:28

If you're a taxi driver not a single rule of the road applies to you

Snowwontbelong · 17/12/2018 16:30

Royal Mail vans are allowed to remove your wing mirror at speed.

If the person in front of you is driving at the speed limit - you are entitled to drive right up their backside.
Hmm

abacucat · 17/12/2018 16:31

If you have a posh new Range Rover and you are driving in the country on single track roads, don't love over to the verge to let other cars by. Make that low hung old cheap car move over instead.

It's illegal for taxi drivers and audi drivers to move their hand two centimeters in order to use their indicators

abacucat · 17/12/2018 16:32

If you want a car to move out your way, drive as close as possible to them, preferably at 70mph, and repeatedly flash your headlights at them.

It's fine to fling open your door into oncoming traffic and get your child out onto the road.

It's fine to just stop your car with no warning with a queue of traffic behind you, so you can hold it all up so you can attempt to park your car, which is to big for you to actually handle, into a space to small , so you end up parked at angle to the kerb, before doing #1

After doing both #1 And #2 it is then fine to just totally ignore the well placed zebra crossing and step out into traffic without looking.

Then, after doing steps #1,#2 And #3, it is totally fine to get back in your car and pull into the road without indicating or actually looking!

Bus drivers are allowed to pull in front of you whenever they like.

Men are obliged to pull into the outside lane immediately upon joining the motorway.

The middle lane of the motorway is for women only, and is the only lane they are allowed to drive in.

Red lights do not apply to cyclists.

The hard shoulder is to remind lorry drivers they have fallen asleep at the wheel.

LuggsaysNotaWomen · 17/12/2018 16:37

If everybody is pulling over for an emergency vehicle you are required to pull back out immediately after it and over take everybody else who has pulled over rather than just letting everybody back out out in an orderly fashion (especially important for Audi and BMW drivers).

Jaxhog · 17/12/2018 16:38

And parents are allowed to stop anywhere (road, pavement, zebra crossing, your drive etc.) as they will only be there 'for 10 minutes, tops'.

Elfinablender · 17/12/2018 16:40

If someone drives too slow, hurry them along a bit by riding on their bumper.

gamerchick · 17/12/2018 16:40

Yeah see BMW drivers above. What's that all about? Hmm

LuggsaysNotaWomen · 17/12/2018 16:42

You’re allowed to beep your horn a at driver in front of you who is waiting to pull out of a junction if you deem them to be being overly cautious regardless of whether there has been an actual opportunity to pull out or not.

abacucat · 17/12/2018 16:44

Don't bother using the inside lane on a motorway. Its fine to drive in the second or third lane at whatever low speed you want, even if the inside lane is totally empty.

That mums on the school run can do whatever they like, park wherever they like because they have a CHILD!! Well done for procreating...Smile.

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 17/12/2018 16:47

That it’s ok to park in the parent and child spaces even if you don’t have a small child.

Elfinablender · 17/12/2018 16:51

If it's been on amber for a while and you speed up to a gazillion miles an hour so that you go through when it's only just turned red, technically it's only pink and therefore doesn't count.

LuggsaysNotaWomen · 17/12/2018 16:52

If you’re a large lorry it is a prerequisite to park on the road just in front of a bus stop and between some traffic lights a junction and a zebra crossing, thus rendering all other road users immobile until you saunter casually back to your vehicle whilst taking the time to check your phone before pulling away (actually happened today).

cjt110 · 17/12/2018 16:53

Fuck waiting in the queue at the roundabout to go ahead... Nip past in the right hand lane... Go all the way AROUND the round about then off at the same junction anyway....

Sirzy · 17/12/2018 16:55

If you see a hgv you have to do anything possible to make sure your in front of it

porger80 · 17/12/2018 16:55

You must never EVER say thank you to anyone who has given way to you. If you do this you will lose respect from your fellow drivers and have lost the game of driving.

BlueJay1 · 17/12/2018 16:57

No need to ever use indicators, common sense or comply with any rules of the road if you are an Uber driver

mumonashoestring · 17/12/2018 17:00

Busy roundabouts and box junctions exist to provide respite to weary drivers and should never be left clear. It's ungrateful.

SantasBassoon · 17/12/2018 17:06

Motorcyclists must be the fastest vehicle on any stretch of road. They must not, even if unsafe to do otherwise, travel at or below the speed of any other vehicle on the road.
