Unwritten rules of the road

Just been out driving and it reminds me of the unwritten driving rules that many seem to follow. So these are -

  • It is fine to stop on a double yellow as long as you put your hazards on
  • It is fine to park somewhere illegal as long as it is "only for a minute"
  • It is fine to speed if you are "in a hurry"

When someone is being cautious driving in the snow, taxi drivers are allowed to overtake at twice the speed limit.

You can park in a disabled parking spot if you're not completely in the lines and park either over the hatched markings slightly, or even better, across two disabled bays so that the hatched markings are in the centre of your car.

It’s okay to put your indicator on after you’ve started to turn 😡😡

When crossing the road make sure you never take your eyes off your phone and walk as slowly as you can so those waiting to drive can just sit and watch and wait and wait.

Cyclists don't need to adhere to any speed limits especially not in built up areas and on cycle paths.Too bad if you are standing in the way.

If someone has ‘princess/prince on board’ stuck to the back window, they can drive exactly how they like.

Nannewnannew · 21/12/2018 07:19

It’s compulsory to stop at the entrance of my local Waitrose car park hoping to ‘see’ an empty space over the other side! Never mind the other shoppers behind you queuing onto the main road😬

Surfskatefamily · 21/12/2018 07:21

I stop on doubles if its something like baby going mental and i cant focus. As long as its a safe place and not obstructing others

I think a lot of cars didnt have indicaters installed. Mostly bmws and audis

Also seems like the motorway rule is go as fast as you can up my arse nevermind that you can just overtake. I dread motorways

cliffdiver · 21/12/2018 07:44

If you're a delivery driver then it's fine to park in the middle of the road (blocking other cars from entering / leaving) rather than actually parking in one of the many available parking spaces.

gamerwidow · 21/12/2018 07:49

It’s totally fine not to give way to the right in roundabouts and just pull out whenever you feel like. After all you’ve in a hurry so it doesn’t matter if other people have to brake to avoid you.
Enjoying the BMW hate but surely it’s Audi drivers you should be looking at (slopes off to BMW).

Ifailed · 21/12/2018 07:51

Cyclists don't need to adhere to any speed limits That's true, they only apply to motorised vehicles.

gamerwidow · 21/12/2018 07:55

Cyclists also don’t have to follow traffic lights. Massive respect to anyone who cycles but yesterday I missed one by inches when they shot out at speed in front of me at the lights. They didn’t even slow down even though their light was red.

If you bought a gold Q7, feel free to drive up the middle of the Eldon Square corkscrew hooting at the plebs coming down. After all, you have money to exhibit and the wall is at most 4 feet away.

ALemonyPea · 21/12/2018 17:51

Haha Disgrace, I was just in that very car park today. Don't drive a gold car though. The corkscrew is terrible, they should stop big cars parking in it as you have to swerve into the oncoming lane sometimes to avoid hitting them as you go down.

Suzyloo · 21/12/2018 18:09

If you are a cyclist, it's fine to undertake buses, particularly when they are driving along pulling in and out of bus stops regularly. It's also fine to pound on the door of the bus and scream abuse at the driver for daring to do his actual job.

If you live rurally and drive a shiny Range Rover up a single track Hill you must never reverse. Even if a tractor and trailer, a horse box and 4 cars are coming down the hill. Sit very still and they will understand that reversing is for everyone else.
That special hand signal that they all give you with one, or sometimes two fingers, means 'we realise you don't need to reverse' in country language.
