Have you turned your heating back on yet?

I think ours has been off since the beginning of May and we are trying to hold off turning it back on as long as we can but it's getting pretty chilly now so I don't think it'll be much longer!

Not yet but it was flipping freezing when I got out of bed this morning so think I might set it for an hour before the alarm on a morning just to warm it up. I tend to wear pyjamas and fluffy dressing gown on an evening so not quite cold enough for heating on a night yet!

DropZoneOne · 24/09/2018 07:32

Not yet, it only went off in May and our direct debit has increased by 50% as a result! So trying to hold off a bit longer.

The underfloor heating in the bathroom has started kicking in though.

Praisebe · 24/09/2018 07:33

Our Central heating has been on since early September especially in the morning when it's so cold theres frost on the Windows. It goes off again during the day when it warms up and back on at night before bed so we aren't cold. What is the MN obsession with having it off ours only costs about 10p per day to run constantly on high its not like its expensive Hmm

BillywigSting · 24/09/2018 07:38

I've had it on for 20 minutes or so once or twice to take the chill off but it's definitely not properly cold here yet, especially if it's sunny.

I put it on for a bit when we caught the end of whatever the last storm was and was hailing but otherwise it's been fine.

We do have the proper duvet back on the bed though not the light summer bedspread

BeautifulPossibilities · 24/09/2018 07:40

Yes! Down to 4 degrees last night too. Of course it's on!

KirbyTheFirst · 24/09/2018 07:44

No! Far too bloody poor to put the heating on in September.

Socks, blankets, hot water bottles and got chocolate here instead

cricketmum84 · 24/09/2018 07:47

Also I spend every evening with a warm purring kitten laid across my shoulders which tends to warm me up a fair bit Grin

LunchBoxPolice · 24/09/2018 07:48

Mine is on, it's 5degrees here. Blue sky and sunny too though so it's good.

echt · 24/09/2018 07:54

I'm in reverse, trailing off heating as the Victorian spring gets into gear. Last night and tonight will be wood fire in the living room only. In the morning, heating on so as to dry off washing in the laundry .

I don't heat the bedroom, even in winter, but have a big fuck-off Game of Thrones throw on the bed.

Catquest1 · 24/09/2018 07:58

No not yet - mainly because the thermostat is saying 19 degs even though i think its noticeably cooler outside. I have filled up the inside log basket - we would use the log burner first to take the chill off before the heating. Im am going to change the duvets to the autumn one today.

I think it really depends on where you are in the country, your housing as well as your circumstances. What's right for one isnt going be right for another. Our house is quite old but with really big windows so todays its cool but really sunny here and that little bit of sunshine will warm up the house no end but thats not going to be case for everyone.

PoxAlert · 24/09/2018 08:02

No. Our thermostat is set to 17. So far it's not gone below 19.5.

Will leave it up to the thermostat gods.

CountFosco · 24/09/2018 08:09

Every year we have these threads. What latitude do you live at? How insulated is your house? I grew up in the north of Scotland, it's not uncommon there to have the heating on all summer, especially in an old drafty house. My brother lives in a modern flat in London, he rarely has his heating on even in the winter. Does that help?

Thebluedog · 24/09/2018 08:11

It was 15 degrees in the house this morning so I put ours on

lynmilne65 · 24/09/2018 08:20

Yep, am old and cold 🤨

LoniceraJaponica · 24/09/2018 08:21

“Just put on a jumper. It’s not cold yet !”

It might not be cold where you are UnrelentingFruitScoffer, so there’s no need to be so smug about it Hmm
It is 4 degrees here this morning. The heating is on.

“What is the MN obsession with having it off ours only costs about 10p per day to run constantly on high it’s not like its expensive”

You are clearly not in the UK Praisebe. Central heating is expensive, and costs a great deal more than 10p a day. We have just had our direct debit notification, and spread out over the year it costs £2.76 a day over 365 days. That is £1008 per year, which is unaffordable for many people, so Hmm back at you!

Exactly CountFosco. The "it's not cold yet" brigade probably live in a well insulated flat in London. We live in a detached house on the edge of the Pennines. The heating goes on when it is cold. I can now afford to not be a martyr to the cold.

You don't get any prizes for being a martyr.

AnnabelleLecter · 24/09/2018 10:30

Yes morning and evening, plus autumn/winter duvet is now on.
My childhood home had no central heating and no heating at all upstairs. It was bloody miserable. Never again.

Titsywoo · 24/09/2018 11:16

I'm in the SE and it was 4 degrees here at 7am! There was a frost too. I think I'll be putting it back on this week in the evening. Although it is chilly when I get up I find I get too hot if it is on in the morning as I'm always rushing around.

OP posts:
Friolero · 24/09/2018 11:17

Yes, we've had it on first thing in the morning and in the evening for a couple of weeks now Blush

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 24/09/2018 11:25

I'm in a well insulated new build and so am holding out till Oct, that said I had the boiler man here this morning and he put it on to check it was working okay! ! I'm cold at 18-19 degrees inside so when it starts reading at that the heating will go on. It was 20 this morning, I'm still hanging my washing out!

I have a little electric oil radiator which is cheap to run and will cosily heat one room.

TheLastNigel · 24/09/2018 11:26

Mine went on on Friday night-mad has been on morning and evening for a few hours each since. In fairness I've been laid low with a chest infection for three weeks-plus it was 2 degrees when went out on the school run this morning so we would have needed it on anyway.
Have discovered dd2's new radiator doesn't work so chance to get it fixed before it gets properly cold.

Juanbablo · 24/09/2018 11:26

Ours is on! It's cold today and was frosty last night.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 24/09/2018 11:27

Yeah. For half an hour this morning. It was freezing when I woke up so I put it on to tempt DD out of bed.

Now the house is find again so should be a while before I have to turn it back on.

DiabolicalMess · 24/09/2018 11:28

Well, I tried but found it doesn't work. Bit of a mare.

OddestSock · 24/09/2018 11:33

No, I went to test it yesterday & the clip on the boiler is broken & stuck on summer mode 😭 DH fried a DIY job on it which didn’t work, but we’ve ordered a new part so that should hopefully sort it.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 24/09/2018 11:35

Yes

And changed from my summer duvet to my lovley cosy winter duvet Smile
