Have you turned your heating back on yet?

I think ours has been off since the beginning of May and we are trying to hold off turning it back on as long as we can but it's getting pretty chilly now so I don't think it'll be much longer!

Where in the world does it cost 10p a day for heating! In our old, uninsulated house with dodgy windows by last winter we were getting through 500 litres of oil a month

MrsChollySawcutt · 24/09/2018 11:55

That's a mad amount of oil a month Fivegomad. Big detached house here but we would expect 500 litres to last 3 months at least.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 24/09/2018 11:57

I've had mine on since the end of August. I really really tried not to put it on because we save so much money in the summer but despite wearing loads of jumpers and having an awful cow onesie and a hot water bottle I just can't keep warm.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 24/09/2018 11:58

I know, no insulation in the roof and rotten windows, and could see the sky through the tiles, big old 400 year old farm house, we had been asking for the last 8 years it needed sorting, now we have moved out it's being done

liquidrevolution · 24/09/2018 11:59

Another storage heater house here. They are a pain as well as being really expensive. I expect they will go on sometime in December and we switch off by March.

In the meantime we enjoy our free stash of wood by using our wood burner lots and I have little heaters I use when working from home and at DDs bedtime.

I layer up clothes, wear a fleece jacket indoors and plastic soles slippers (we also have a ceramic tile floor which the previous owners installed Hmm)

stegosauruslady · 24/09/2018 12:01

Nope, but then we are a wood burner only house and the chimneys aren't being swept until Saturday!

Really looking forward to snuggling up with DP and a fire on Saturday night though.

Camomila · 24/09/2018 12:05

We put it on for an hour or two from 6am so DH can shower in the warm. After than it's off all day as the flat stays warm.

RedneckStumpy · 24/09/2018 13:26

We live just below the 45th parallel. It’s 4C this morning. Further north snow is already on the ground.

We heat the house with a wood stove only, we are holding off as long as we can as we don’t want to run out of firewood.

Shoxfordian · 24/09/2018 13:54

Yeah ours has been on since Saturday

UnrelentingFruitScoffer · 24/09/2018 18:13

Just put on a jumper. If necessary woolly socks. No need for the heating yet.

theboxofdelights · 24/09/2018 18:51

Competitive freezing thread .... always happens!

Miljah · 24/09/2018 19:52

Well, I would have- except the pigging thermostat in the hall won't work!! About the worst time of the year as you can guarantee the local heating people will be inundated with broken boilers/cold/leaking radiators etc etc.So there I was, torch in my teeth, out in the shed and the wood store cobbling together a fire in the wood burner, phone under my chin talking a friend through which plants she should bring inside! She doesn't need to at 4 degrees, btw! Sorry, no paragraphs, the MN paragraph maker also appears to be broken....

Rarfy · 24/09/2018 19:56

North East here, was 3 degrees in car on way to work this morning which would explain why i was freezing when got out of bed.our house is averaging 14-16degrees inside but really really trying to resist using heating as hoping to give our one months notice this week at some point. Plus it would takr 2 - 3 hours to get it up to 19 / 20 degrees.

Icequeen01 · 24/09/2018 20:24

Another one who has the log burner on tonight to take the chill off. Don't want to put on the heating and heat up the whole house as bedrooms will get too hot. Can't stand sitting watching tv with lots of layers on. I can't move and feel like the mitchelin man!

LoniceraJaponica · 24/09/2018 21:42

“Just put on a jumper. If necessary woolly socks. No need for the heating yet.”

Bully for you. I refer you to my post at 08.21 this morning. If “just putting a jumper and a pair of socks on” was sufficient we wouldn’t be having this discussion. For many people who feel the cold the ambient temperature needs to be warmer, and jumpers and socks don’t really make much difference.

Titsywoo · 24/09/2018 21:48

Mine's just gone back on! We've had carpenters building cupboards into our hallway today and they had the front door open all day. The thermostat was saying 15 so I caved Grin.

babygoatsmummy · 24/09/2018 21:50

Mine broke down at the weekend, waiting for the repair man to come tomorrow. I didn't actually feel cold until it broke. Grrrr.

LanguidLobster · 24/09/2018 22:00

Ooh yes, put it on for half hour earlier. I was surprised it still worked.

A580Hojas · 24/09/2018 22:03

Yes, put ours on tonight. Lovely!

OhTheRoses · 24/09/2018 23:23

It was cold when I left this morning 3° Surrey. Cold at work all day and cold when I left. In drawing room now drinking wine. Heating on and blissfully toasty. Gloves in car tomorrow. As dh says, there's a wide diurnal variation at this time of the year.

Notsohorriblehistory · 25/09/2018 12:49

Not turned on yet. But very close

Anyone got one of the weighted / gravity blankets? I’m considering but so pricey but I have heard lovely and cosy

DIYdufus · 25/09/2018 12:53

Just had mine on last w/e as chilly in am, but have set thermo to 18C so it's only running for short while. I had hoped to get system checked under British Gas HomeCare annual service contract, taken out July last year - but when I went online to book it, website said "we'll contact you & let you know when you can book". Isn't this a scam if they don't provide an "annual" service within the 12 months?

purpleme12 · 25/09/2018 12:54

Nope not put it on yet!
It says it's 14 in the room where we've got the thermometer. 12 degrees outside. But I don't feel cold at the minute. In my t-shirt

Notsohorriblehistory · 25/09/2018 13:02

But if taken out last July hasn’t your policy expired?

DrCoconut · 25/09/2018 13:09

Putting jumpers/socks/blankets on doesn't warm the air so heating is needed once it gets cold. DS2 is asthmatic and cold air badly affects his health.
