Absolutely, and that’s what I struggled with when my niece asked me her questions.

For example, if in one room there were two lesbians, performing oral sex and digital sex on each other, to some that would be classed as them having sex with each other. But if in the room next door there was a heterosexual couple doing the exact same sexual activities with each other (and that’s all they’d ever done with each other) why wouldn’t they be classed as having sex with each other?

Would you say that a heterosexual couple engaging in foreplay with each other are no longer virgins even though PIV has never taken place between them?

In my eyes, and probably a large part of societies eyes, there is a difference between sexual activity (all means of foreplay), and actual sex (PIV), which is separates a virgin from a non-virgin.

And this is what I stumbled over when trying to answer my niece’s questions.

I.e why when two girls are engaging in foreplay together would it be classed as them having sex (and so they wouldn’t be viewed as virgins), but a male/female couple engaging in the exact same foreplay (and who’d never had sex) would still be classed as virgins?

Where is the line between how a lesbian loses her virginity compared to how heterosexual people lose their virginity.

I’m probably not explaining myself very well and sorry again for any offence that may have been caused.

I absolutely agree with you though that different people have different ideas about what sex actually is.

Women can also have penetrative sex with each other using toys. It's not all foreplay, although some may not like penetrative sex and that's also OK. The problem is you are trying to answer a question with a like for like mentality, it's how hetro couples define virginity-penatration with a Penis. Lesbian sex is not the same. Even the word virgin is kind of strange anyway. Anyone who has been intimate with another and enjoyed sexual pleasure is not exactly virginal even without a Penis involved. What about gay men? Do they only define it by anal sex? What if they prefer only oral or touching. The word is less important than the context.

Long thread do I haven’t read the whole thing so apologies if you’ve already been asked, but as it’s AMA,
how does scissoring work? Are you lying with heads at opposite ends of the bed just rubbing?

Kitkatcatflap · 06/04/2025 16:58

Aside from sounding like a 90's indie band, is Lesbian bed death a real thing?

I think it can be yes but I’ve heard a lot of similar stories from my straight friends too that sex just kinda stops

Really? How is it different from hetro couples? When one or both has an orgasm surely and both decide its over?

Because usually men have one, then takes a while to recover to go again, so this often becomes the natural end. But women can have them again and again so no natural ending point!

I've never had a multiple orgasm so I guess this never occurred to me. Once I've had an orgasm it's relatively over for me. My wife is similar. It's still a funny question to me, it sounds like most people need a sign for the end! It's over for any couple when they both want it to be!

That sounds a little bit predatory. Is it?

Yes it is - triggered an awful memory of a lesbian who refused to take no for an answer in a night club once. I’m totally, 100% straight and don’t have an ounce of interest in women. She refused to leave me alone and it frightened me. Never have I had that experience with a man. The only predatory sexual encounter I have had is with a woman.

Gattopardo · 14/04/2025 22:40

@NorthernGirl1981 i mean, the whole idea of virginity is like something from the dark ages.

I don’t think the issue is a difference between gay and straight definitions of virginity. I think the issue is foregrounding some man wanging his dick around and penetrating a woman.

Let’s just ditch the whole notion that this is the most important event in anyone’s life.

Sexual activity is sexual activity. When you engage in it, you’re sexually active. That’s it,

obviously PIV has the potential to cause a pregnancy and that does feed into the virginity narrative, but it’s increasingly irrelevant now we have birth control and abortion available (at least in the UK :( )

I’m sorry to hear that. Predators can come in any guise. The absolute majority are men, but that doesn’t diminish your horrible experience :(
