Married, two kids, stay at home mother and functioning alcoholic. Both my kids are happily playing with toys in front of me while I sip on my second vodka and sprite and wrap gifts for nieces birthday tomorrow

Please get help OP. I’m a recovering alcoholic (over 5 years sober) and I know how impossible it seems but my life is unimaginably better in ever single way now that I don’t drink. For your own sake and that of your children please seek support. I was “functioning” at one point too, until I wasn’t. You don’t need to reach absolute rock bottom before you make the changes you need.

As the child of a " secret functioning alcoholic". They know. They will always know. You aren't hiding it.

Get help now or pack and leave.

You're going to crash and burn at some point.
Do you drive? What if you were needed right now to drive your dc somewhere? You'd either have to do it to maintain your secret and risk lives or admit you can't.

By the way there’s no such thing as a “functioning alcoholic”. It’s a delusion fuelled by the alcohol.

You are abusing your dependent children right now. Please get help. It will only get worse.

How horrendously sad, your poor children, are they safe? You need to tell someone

25 years ago I knew a woman like this, she was the mother of a child in my child's class. I expect she thought she was functioning, but everyone could smell the alcohol on her breath and see her slightly glazed eyes at school pick up time. She's dead now, choked on her own vomit while sleeping while her children were in school.

Go on then, bitey, bitey... How many drinks do you generally have during the day while caring for your children?

This was my mum. Everyone knew and ignored it and my siblings and I are deeply traumatised 30 years on.

How long have you had a problem? Did you drink during pregnancy?
I bet people in your life are aware to a degree but don't want to mention it.
Please seek help before something happens to your children whist you're under the influence.
