@Jakadaal

Advice on what to wear for a 50th party - I'm - hopefully - a youngish 56 year old, 5ft 4, size 16-18 and I struggle with high heels. My usual go to is jeans/bistro trousers and a nice top. I love colour and kimonos!
Should have said I'm trying to break away from the nice top and trousers and possibly wear a dress but don't want to look either frumpy or mutton dressed as lamb!
AlGorithim · 01/07/2021 20:33

@frillseeking I just wanted to thank you for your help. I bought the dress you suggested from SilkFred but sadly it only comes in one size and the chest was too tight. However, I did also buy a few other things and am super pleased with a couple of new shirts I got! They are flattering and I feel more confident about dressing for the occasional office day.

There are loads of other things on there too which I like so I’m bookmarking it for when I’ve lost more weight.

Thanks for doing this thread.

Thanks so much for the feedback. Shame about the Silk Fred dress but I'm so pleased that you have found some new pieces! :)

I'm really uninterested in clothes, and was sceptical, I have to say.
You are so amazing at finding the exact right thing though, that my head has been turned, and I'm really invested in this thread now.
Thank you. Smile

@Jakadaal. it can be a little daunting when stepping away from your usual style so I think something simple and elegant would be a good option for you so that you don't feel too far out of your comfort zone. You mentioned you like colour and the kimono style so I wondered if something like this might work for you

www.jdwilliams.co.uk/shop/yumi-curves-kimono-flared-midi-dress-in-green/LR660/product/details/show.action?pdBoUid=3156&optionColour=Green&optionSize=26&promo=6202&cm_mmc=GOOGLE--JDWilliams--na-_-PRODUCT_GROUP&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=CjwKCAjwz_WGBhA1EiwAUAxIcWttbwR-8Jz5hndg7xrNR_bzwiFdglX0rFC2hBH1Q0xJdlsi4tTGURoCCPEQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

This is also a gorgeous style without being too over the top: www.johnlewis.com/phase-eight-mylee-belted-dress/coral/p4859175

www.jdwilliams.co.uk/shop/strappy-heeled-sandals-wide-e-fit/RM673/product/details/show.action?pdBoUid=2094&optionColour=Gold&optionSize=7&promo=6202&cm_mmc=GOOGLE--JDWilliams--na-_-PRODUCT_GROUP&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=CjwKCAjwz_WGBhA1EiwAUAxIcTijaEmFj_OUST7Ief7JDMCE9Ni1h2og_hjMviAl8LOw3eapP8VJShoCFakQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Then Id go for a gold low heel sandal to add a bit of glamour as it's an occasion www.jdwilliams.co.uk/shop/strappy-heeled-sandals-wide-e-fit/RM673/product/details/show.action?pdBoUid=2094&optionColour=Gold&optionSize=7&promo=6202&cm_mmc=GOOGLE--JDWilliams--na-_-PRODUCT_GROUP&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=CjwKCAjwz_WGBhA1EiwAUAxIcaSBOxNh7y_eislzrH88zv-pMS1W-cWHpyHXR7JcKbctpXhAWzdMZBoCI_YQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Hope that helps!

@LegoCaltrops

Where us the best place to buy trousers & jeans for men who are built like Vikings? By which I mean, over 6ft tall, & naturally heavily muscled & broad of shoulder. And a bit of a belly! I'm fed up of seeing DH in scruffy old clothes - he hates clothes shopping as anything in his length is usually for slim men with relatively slim legs.
I had to look into this one as I don't usually do mens but it seems like it's the same problem as women have - its big OR tall, not many brands combine the two so the offering is limited. M&S do a big and tall range and they have some nice smart casual styles such as this chino www.marksandspencer.com/big-and-tall-cotton-rich-stretch-chinos/p/clp60431215?color=DARKNAVY#intid=prodColourId-60463499 and for jeans, Levi's offer a big and tall range www.levi.com/GB/en_GB/shop-all/514-straight-jeans-big-tall/p/005141267

I don't know how the fit actually comes up so if he tries them, please report back!

Oh thanks, we don't live near a M&S with a clothing section so I've not managed to drag him in to have a look before now, as it requires a train journey, but I will. Will report back when I can. Will probably be a while though!

Poodlesarecool · 01/07/2021 22:58

Thank you @frillseeking! Appreciate your advice. My boras shoulders seem broader lately and feeling quite self-conscious (think it’s beginning of putting on middle-aged weight which I’m trying to resist). I read somewhere that you shouldn’t cinch in your waist as that makes broad shoulders look bigger, but I feel so tent-like if I don’t define my waist. Thanks for advice - I’ll shop for V-necks x

Poodlesarecool · 01/07/2021 22:59

*broad!

I'm not sure if it would be available in store, it might only be in the flagships or online but hope he finds something!

@ittakes2

What's in fashion please for a slim 14/15 year old. thank you
This is another tricky one because taste is so personal at that age, it's all about experimenting and trying to find your own style as you come out of adolescence. I think on the whole the look that most teens seem to be wearing is very casual and sporty - think 90s cycling short vibes - and what teen girl doesn't own a pair of denim shorts, it's like a uniform! I'd go and have a look around Primark and New Look as they tend to cater for the younger market and just have a browse together and have fun

@IaltagDhubh

Are there any brands that pre-shrink their fabrics? I’m so sick of finding beautiful clothes that fit perfectly until the first time I wash them. I got the perfect jumpsuit from Seasalt recently and felt amazing in it the first time I wore it. Washed at 30 degrees and hung it up to dry and the next time I went to put it on, it was too small. Had the same experience with a dress from Oasis a couple of years ago too. I’ve always believed that I can’t wear dresses or jumpsuits because I’m quite long waisted. So it’s so disappointing when I think I’ve finally found one I can wear, only for it to shrivel up in the wash.

Thanks op, great thread Smile

Thanks! So yes you can get washed fabrics or washed garments and whilst not 100%, they are much less likely to shrink. Have a look for garment wash or washed cotton. Unfortunately, cotton is one of the worst fabrics for shrinkage whilst polyester is one of the best but a lot of people don't like it. I remember I bought a pair of viscose trousers from Oasis and I loved them but I had to steam them every time I washed them to try to stretch them back out again! Toast seem to do a lot of garment washed styles

@frillseeking thank you so much - a lovely shape and my favourite colour!!

I've found these other 2 dresses - is a round neck a complete no no for big boobs?

I love NFD and their curve range is amazing isn't it! Love both of these but the first one will definitely be the most flattering. Gorgeous print

Best jeans for a C-section overhang? 😭🙈

MinnieJackson · 02/07/2021 00:19

@mussinboots, I'm not OP but I've had three and high waisted skinny are my friend lol. I guess anything high waisted really, for me i just feel more pulled in and together!

Yes absolutely! High waist holds everything in Smile if you can get out and have a feel of the fabric, go for something that feels stretchy but has good bounce back if that makes sense so you know it will hold you in

@frillseeking and @MinnieJackson - thanks but any high waisted jeans I've tried highlight the overhang and give me painful bloating. To give you an example, my legs are a size 14 but my stomach and the ridiculous state of it means, I've had to go up a few sizes- like an 18. I look horrendous 😭 viva leggings and tunics atm. Are there any particular brands you'd recommend or styles?

MinnieJackson · 02/07/2021 00:59

I have the same, quite slim arms and legs but I look pregnant all the time! @mussinboots I was wearing a couple of months ago, massive t-shirts and smock dresses but my tummy still poked out and I looked like an egg on legs lol. It sounds strange, but I wear my high waisted jeans, (m&s have a bit more elastic i think, and I think the shaper type ones are good) but I wear a shorter top. I know it sounds mad and I honestly used to live in long sleeved and long tops. I might look horrible but I feel more confident. The tops just kind of skim where the c section pouch is Flowers

Maybe try a high waist jegging as they'll be softer on your scar. The M&S ones have cult like status, they're amazing!

Also try wearing a tight fitting vest as an under layer to give you a smoother silhouette. I always found that helped

@frillseeking off topic but I got a free hayu month or something, and kourtney Kardashian's outfits are amazing in the take new York episodes! I think it said it was filmed in 2011 or something, but I would still wear every piece! Do you know who their stylist is?
