This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

There is going to be a lot of media hype about this storm, it has already started. Wether that is justified or not remains to be seen. Some of the models are showing some quite extreme scenarios, others not so much and severe winds are forecast from anywhere between the north Midlands through to the channel, depending on which model and which model run.

Exciting stuff. Typically I am doing home visits on Exmoor that day (NHS).

There's the possibility for a lovely last couple of school runs before half term then Hmm

When the lunchtime forecast was on, there wasn't a weather warning for Friday but when they showed the wind gust chart, I'm not surprised the metoffice issued one this afternoon.

(I did say to DH that Dudley and Eunice sound like an elderly married couple in their 70s!)

Oooh placemarking, have horses and chickens and always worry about extreme weather, plus dh goes from sheffield to Manchester every day across woodhead.

Why have the recent and upcoming storms appeared in pairs?

I hate it, you put up with one and then can't breathe a sigh of relief because its buddy is on the way.

No sleep for me from Wednesday onwards as my area is forecast to have the wind overnight.

Thanks for the heads up. Wednesday looks strangely warm too - 16 degrees in London.

It is unusual to have named storms quite so back to back, but given they are associated with a very energetic jet stream, of the circumstances are favourable to generate one, then it isn't uncommon for them to remain favourable to generate more.

It's rather handy having names for storms this week when trying to talk about and discern risk impacts from each of them. Storms are named when they have the potential to warrant amber or red warnings.

It can be a bit of a mess when a storm affects more than one country and thus named by a different country. It causes some confusion sometimes.

I'm slightly worried that I will have created some confusion by creating separate threads for each storm, so to reiterate this thread is
fridays storm which looks to be more midlands/southern england oriented than
weds/thursday affair which will affect northern england, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
I was trying to reduce confusion.

There may be a little model consensus this afternoon evening that focuses the worst of the winds on Friday through northern Wales, Midlands and East Anglia.

In saying that, some models are still keen to shove it along the channel.

My bit of Edinburgh isn't in Friday's wind warning, by about 1/2 a mile Grin
It just seems to have been almost constant wind for the last 3 weeks.

Morning all, generally some less extreme solutions than last night, though one model is still showing silly numbers. Nevertheless gusts of 70-80mph are showing across a wide area of densely populated southern England as well as across southern areas in Wales. Higher gusts possible in places. Exact location still to be determined and we may not know until the storm actually forms on Thursday. But generally the main core of very strong winds is being modelled to lie somewhere between the midlands and the south coast.

There is still potential for the storm to be less developed and for it to slide further south I think. But as it stands, I'd expect amber warnings to be released sometime over the next couple of days.

There is still a snow risk on the northern edge of the storm.

I'm continuing to update Storm Dudley in the other thread. I'll be back at lunchtime to update both threads with latest thoughts.
