Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Thank you for the new thread!

Now that I have some time on my hands (I did a 5k Darkness Into Light 5km walk at 4am to fundraise for Pieta House, who provide counselling to people suffering from depression, suicidal thoughts and self-harm - we do this every year) and have had a mid-morning nap, here are my thoughts on April.

I have mixed up my routine a bit now that I am tolerating more products.

AM Routine
Cleanse: dermalogica essential cleanser or image vital C
Essence/spray: vichy mineral water or Kiels first treatment essence
Eye cream: olay total effects
HA: Vichy 89 (will switch back to Pestle & Mortar when I finish it)
Vitamin C: skinactives vit c 20% (will switch back to DE when finished)
Cream: DE Protini
SPF: aus gold spf45/DE tinted umbra/frezyderm velvet touch

PM routine
1st cleanse: TBS balm/Emma Hardie balm. Bioderma micellar to remove eye makeup
2nd cleanse: dermalogica essential cleanser/cerave hydrating cleanser/LRP toleriane hydrating gentle cleanser
Acid tone: x3 per week BR P50
Spritz: Vichy mineral water
HA: hada labo premium
Eye cream: Kiehls midnight recovery/verso
Serum: TO Buffet plus copper OR P&M superstar retinol (if no BR used)
neck: rodial sculpting gel
Cream: embryolisse/ceramidin/avene hydrance etc

I still have lots of creams in rotation so I use them depending on how my skin is feeling, more or less hydrated etc. I am enjoying using hada labo in my PM routine.

EMPTIES
Avene rich compensating cream - LOVE this for winter and will RP
Hand Chemistry pro - another HG, have RP the large pump bottle form Deciem and it lives beside my bed
Bioderma Atoderm cream - lovely for when my decolletage is feeling tight and bumpy. I already RP the large pump bottle and have it on hand. Found it useful for the whole body when skin very dry
Reiss body souffle - I have this a couple of years so was just using it up. Gorgeous fragrance that unfortunately fades quickly.
PawPaw hair serum - meh, I used this and loved it at first but by the end of the bottle I found I was reaching for other things instead.
TBS hand cream almond milk & honey - lovely fragrance and sinks in quickly; perfect in the small tube for handbag or car. I think I bought 2 together so will look for the backup :)
Image Vital C body lotion - lovely citrus fragrance but nothing special and not worth the €€ price tag. Will not RP
Shay Blue blood orange 10ml from M&S beauty advent calendar - yummy citrus fragrance, I have RP'ed in 30ml and carry it in my handbag.
Garnier gentle eye mu remover (not the shake and mix version) - this has been my HG for years but it is hard to find, so I bulk order from Superdrug. However I have now started using my Bioderma micellar water after seeing others talk about it here and it is brilliant.

PLANNED PURCHASES
Nothing much really; I recently received DE Protini so am introducing it in. I am looking into a more hydrating spray for the AM as the Vichy kind of tightens my skin. Maybe Pyongyang Yul mist as recommended by (I think) Gothamista among others.

PRODUCTS ON TRIAL
Frezyderm velvet touch spf 50 - like it so far (using about one week) - still working out which of my foundations work best over it
Australian Gold spf30 - using this about 6 weeks, like it a lot. Quite fragranced but it disappears quickly. My foundations work well over it
DE Tinted Umbra spf50 - I am quite surprised as I expected not to like this. It is quite tinted so best used alone on non-makeup days with just a bit of powder, but it doesn't make my orange and it doesn't pill.
P&M Retinoil - liking this; the oil texture makes it hard to spread on dry skin so I am applying it after a facial spritz.
NARS TM in Groenland - some days this feels perfect; other days it appears to go darker, so I need to work out how best to layer it. Love the texture and the finish.
TO Buffet plus copper - only started using this recently. I was not sure how to use it but after some reading, I will probably apply it earlier in my routine than I am currently.

SPECIAL MENTION
I tried a bit of dermaplaning, first just doing a patch on my jaw and then a few days later doing the rest of my lower face. That was 2 weeks ago and I have not noticed any regrowth issues. I didn't do a terribly thorough job though as I was too afraid :) The only place my face feels like it has regrowth is actually my chin which I had previously waxed. I will do it again next month and keep notes on how I progress. For now, happy enough.
I also may have mentioned this last month but I am adding a drop of marula oil to my moisturiser occasionally and it is working well.

EnidButton · 12/05/2018 15:50

bo the disappointment with the hourglass foundation stick was the texture and finish of it rather than the colour. The colour (Blanc) is actually brilliant. It makes a good concealer for any marks on my body as it's such a good match. It's worked well as a concealer actually. I'm definitely cool toned, I think me and Olli use the same shade of Lancôme teint idole (008). Smile

Pupsie That sounds like loads of fun! Was it just the two of them there?

Mint Have you ever asked a pharmacist about it? They're more knowledgable about drug side effects than gps. As it seems to be a reaction to the anti-biotics. Flowers Does it go white when you press it? Is it flat? Looked a bit like a petechiae rash from the pic.

EnidButton · 12/05/2018 15:52

Miffy Congrats on doing the walk. Flowers Really wonderful thing to do. Hope it helped raise lots of money and awareness.

EnidButton · 12/05/2018 16:00

Triple post alert 🚨

Just a quick mention for the Essie apricot cuticle oil. Very impressed with it.
Comes in a polish type bottle with the same brush. Goes on orange tinted so you do need to massage it in quite well. Works on dry, peeling skin around the nail and on cuticles. Highly recommend it.

I still massage moisturising cream into the nail area and put the oil on after that's sunk in. Also use it just before going out as a quick fix.

Loved reading your monthly round up Miffy

Pupsiecola · 12/05/2018 16:35

Enid, Sali Hughes, Carline Hirons and Hannah Martin (one of Bobbi Brown's top make up artists).

Pupsiecola · 12/05/2018 16:38

I need to buy an SPF and am obviously looking at the FrezyDerm. Is this what everyone is using? Has anyone tried the tinted version?

mintmagnummm · 12/05/2018 16:59

Enid yes I've shown a pharmacist and they are just as clueless about it and say try antihistamines or speak to gp 😏. I've never heard of that rash u mentioned??

mintmagnummm · 12/05/2018 17:02

Sorry I meant to add that they often have tiny whiteheads on top too, they aren't flat you can feel tiny raised spots when you touch them

TantricTwist · 12/05/2018 17:29

miffy I have Nars TM in Alaska which is a shade lighter than Groenland and I could also swear that sometimes it goes randonly darker Hmm interesting. I don't really use actives in the morning though so not sure why, could just be my imagination.

I still havent cracked open my SPF 30 Frezyderm but as my skin is losing its redness (it's a miracle 🙏🏻) I'm going to use it make up free esp as the LRP I'm using successfully under makeup is too white to wear alone.

Amazingly my healthy eating and exercise has actually paid off already in that I can now fit more comfortably into my current clothes, next stop is to go down a size.

TantricTwist · 12/05/2018 17:37

My Nars TM stayed true to colour today over LRP antihelios matt fluide SPF so it's def not that.

SophieLion · 12/05/2018 17:40

Miffy and Sallie - I haven't used the tinted version of the Frezyderm but I know loads of people here who do and all are very happy with it. Apparently it's not too dark - this was my concern but I think I got confused with an Avene tinted one I tried a while ago - and matches well with most skin tones. I've only tested the tinted Frezyderm on my hand and it was ok. I'll try a bit on my face when I next go to a pharmacy and let you know (I'm
pretty white though).

Well done on doing the walk Miffy and for getting up that early to do it! Thanks and you emptied post was so thorough. Interested to read your experiences with products. Seems the DE vitamin C is really liked by everyone!
Is it only available in the US?

SophieLion · 12/05/2018 17:41

Tant, good to hear the exercising and healthy eating is going well Smile

TantricTwist · 12/05/2018 17:53

Thanks Sophie it slipped a bit today as I had a ribeye steak followed by a chocolate bombe Grin but it had to be done Grin so worth it, yum.

Pupsiecola · 12/05/2018 18:12

Which Bioderma Micellar water do people recommend? My TBS eye make up remover is almost empty and it doesn't quite remove my Bobbi Brown mascara...

EnidButton · 12/05/2018 19:08

Chocolate's good for ya. Anti oxidants or something. Grin

Mint it's a completely flat rash caused by bruising under the skin. Your description doesn't sound like that.

Pupsie Ooh I love Hannah M's instagram. Really like the way Bobbi Brown make up artists do make up. I think I saw a few pics of the evening. Caroline is very tall!

EnidButton · 12/05/2018 19:14

Oh my days, anyone who follows Sali H on insta, go and look at her drag makeup post! 😮 I have no-one here to share my amazement. DH is pretending to be interested in taping faces up but I know he's no idea what I'm on about.

JDSTER · 12/05/2018 19:20

pupsie this one
What did CH say was the one thing you should use? I’d love to go to an event like that Envy.

Tant your meal today sounds gorgeous!

My OH is off to US next week. miffy what do you normally get? I’ll adk him to get LRP double repair moisturiser I’m already using and maybe the cerave night moisturiser. Should I be investing in DE Vit C? Which other Vit C have you tried as a comparison? Any other ‘gems’ I need while he’s there?

Enid I like the sound of that nail oil. I usually use cnd one that smells of almond. I love Essie nail polish. I used to by in US myself before you could even get it here. ‘Mademoiselle’ is the best pale pink nude ever.

JDSTER I am waiting to crack open my second bottle of DE C serum.

I used LRP Redermic C for years (back when it was called Active C) and loved it.
I did not get on too well with TO MAP (It was ok)
I am currently using Skin Actives 20% and yes I like it, it kind of spurts out of the pump and is very very liquidy and transparent. It is working though, so I would happily RP that at some stage. V simple (cheap?) packaging.

As for what else to buy in the US, I am heading to Chicago in October and my wish list so far has the following on it (I probably won't get it all but wand to see some of them IRL:

Sephora; Bite Beauty lipsticks (their agave lip balm is divine)
Ulta: another IT Coosmetics CC cream, and check out the new Bye Bye pores bronzer
Drigstore: LRP gentle cleanser, maybe another Cerave hydrating cleanser, Milani eyeshadow palette, maybelline loose fit me powder, Physicians Formula foundation and Jergen's Natrual Glow gradual tanning lotion.

The walk this morning was fantastic; it takes place in over 100 locations in Ireland and also others across the globe on the same day.
My SIL suffers from bad depression and she organised a group of us last year; she did not take part this year but there were 14 of us walking and many more donating - we raised over €2,600! My DD (18) and my youngest son (13) came along too. All knackered tonight so we have ordered a takeaway. Our rugby team just won the European Champions Cup too so it has been a cracker of a day. :)

Pupsiecola · 12/05/2018 20:44

CH suggested an oil. Can't wait to get another DR But C but also glad to see some love for LRP C here :)

Did I read that some people are in a health kick?

TantricTwist · 12/05/2018 21:10

pupsie me following dreadful photos at a party last week.

Seems to be going well so far actually, eating healthily, recording it on my fitness pal and doing a decent amount of exercise on my cross trainer and walking around a lot. And its actually working.

As much as I love that Bioderma JD it simply doesn't work on my mascaras so I'm sticking to my Nivea double effect.

Pupsiecola · 12/05/2018 22:02

Good for you Tantric. I'm doing the same.

What mascara do you use? I use Bobbi Brown Smoky Eye.

TantricTwist · 13/05/2018 00:05

I've started using Benefit Bad gal bang mascara which I'm loving plus its completely smudge proof and has a gorgeous wand. It seems to glide on really nicely too. Perfection really.

I hadn't eaten since lunch around 2pm but my tummy started to rumble 10 mins ago so I had a bowl of branflakes.

SophieLion · 13/05/2018 06:31

Miffy, have you tried the Vichy vit C? If so, how does it compare to all the others you've used? Thanks!

peonylover22 · 13/05/2018 07:17

Very interested to see all the Vitamin C chat as that is the next thing I want to add in to my “routine” (it’s too underdeveloped to share at the moment). What does “DE” stand for? I got a sample of the Bodyshop Vit C serum. It seems to be doing something but not sure how good it is compared to others. I realise that I’ve shamefully neglected my skin until a couple of months ago (no standalone SPF, no serums, no actives) so it’s just so delighted to have proper stuff used on it that it looks loads better but makes me a pretty crap product tester as everything makes a difference.
I’ve been applying the Vit C at night. Is that right? Should I go for the morning too? Before moisturiser (and SPF)? Worried about product overload but could give it a try on a weekend to see how skin reacts.
The body shop one is quite orange. Is that normal? Not sure whether it will give me an orange glow Confused
General improvement in skin means I’ve moved away from light foundation back to LM tinted moisturiser as seems a shame to hide it. Considering paring back further - dies anyone just wear a BB or CC cream? Is it lighter than a tinted moisturiser? Any recommendations?

botemp · 13/05/2018 07:40

I've never been a big fan of the Body Shop Vitamin C, Peony. IIRC it has fragrance and the percentage of vitamin c is very low. Horrible orange scent and smell to mask the point of oxidation too, I think. DE is Drunk Elephant, only available in the US for now. I use Vichy liftactiv antioxidant booster (or named something like that, it varies per market) which is pretty much a direct dupe (same parent company, slightly different formulation) of the Vitamin C gold standard, SkinCeuticals CE ferulic. It's only 10mls though so seems affordable but comes in about half to two-thirds of the price as SkinCeuticals depending at what price you get it at. I keep it in the fridge to slow down the oxidation rate but realistically you're using it up within 1.5 months.

I only use concealer under the eyes and a bit around the nose and chin. I find BB and CC creams to have more coverage than less IME. BB creams were originally to tackle blemishes so always were a bit more heavy in coverage (but less than foundations) and CC to colour correct (again less heavy than a foundation but it makes you look a bit flat like a heavier foundation as there's no variation in tone). LM TM was the lightest thing I ever found, though I did use it sparingly. You can always dilute the TM with a bit of moisturiser to thin it out a bit.

JDSTER, I like the idea in theory of individual doses of Vitamin C in capsules but I think in that specific product it's more gimmick than advantage as it's in a stable (and therefore possibly less or not effective) silicone formulation. Bit like that Clinique gimmick thing that never really took off. I did see in SH column yesterday that Beauty Pie are selling similar capsules with Vit C for a tenner (if a member).

Just gentle reminder, if you want to ask me something specifically @ me (within reason) because I sometimes overlook/forget it when it gets chatty on here and I'm usually quicker to respond as well. No harm done if you don't @ me, but it just means I'm not purposefully ignoring or dismissing you if I don't respond.
