Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Thanks JDSTER, Pupsie, Tant and Bo for the Niacinamide info. I checked my (still unopened) LRP tolerance ultra nuit and that has Niacinamide - it's about the 5th or 6th ingredient if I remember correctly. I'm curious about Niacinamide as Dr Sam never mentions retinoids without saying they should be paired with Niacinamide.

Tant - I use tret 0.05% (twice a week) and Frezyderm and not had a problem. I generally use a lot of any SPF that goes on my face and reapply quite frequently throughout the day (but you sound like you are doing this anyway). I'm doing this with the Frezyderm too. I've also not really had any reaction to the tret other than purging.

TantricTwist · 14/05/2018 09:36

Tsmummy I think the above from Sophie to me is directed towards you

I was watching Dr Sam (I think) the other day and she squeezed loads of SPF into a half a teaspoon (or a whole tsp) measuring spoon to show just how much SPF is required on ones face.

I'm going to just use TO retinoid over the summer because its quite mild for me but it means I wont be stopping it.

Sophie I've never been aware one should pair niacinamide with retinoid. I might just stick a drop of what I have then in my moisturiser at tleast that way I use it up

TantricTwist · 14/05/2018 09:38

Olli I love how you apply your eyeshadow so perfectly, I could never get mine to look like that.

AtrocityNeedles · 14/05/2018 09:38

Hello everyone, mind if I join? After lurking on this thread for a while I decided to take the plunge and look after my 44 year old skin a bit better. I have dry, fine, sensitive skin. Had serious acne on my chin from ages 14 to 21 but no problems ever since except some products making my skin reactive to the sun.

I've been doing this routine for the last two months: morning (gel) cleanse, eye serum, hyaluronic acid, moisturiser and SPF15. Evening double cleanse (gel/micellar water), eye serum, hyaluronic acid, retinol 0.5 or AHA (alternate days), vitamin C night cream.

In the last couple of weeks the skin of my chin has became red, dry and flaky. I don't know if this is because of exposure to the (better weather) sun or the addition of the vitamin C night cream (only change in my routine since I started two months ago).

I want to attach a pic of my chin...but can't see any clip icon or anything similar!

Ollivander84 · 14/05/2018 09:58

Tantric - I always think mine is rubbish compared to others I see on instagram etc! It honestly only takes a couple of minutes, good brushes and a bit of blending

TantricTwist · 14/05/2018 10:23

I should invest in some new eyeshadows I think.

SophieLion · 14/05/2018 10:24

Yes sorry. You're right Tant: my response about tret and SPF was to Tsmummy.

SophieLion · 14/05/2018 10:25

Hello Atrocity Smile

MrsDOnofrio · 14/05/2018 10:47

Sophie I can see you’ve had several responses already but I use Bioderma hydrabio creme at night and it has niacinamide in it. Would like to try the Cerave pm if Boots ever start selling it as it has ceramides in as well.

Atrocity no advice re the chin but welcome.

Tsmummy08 · 14/05/2018 11:36

Pupsie I don't cleanse before my morning activities, just a splash of water on my face and then straight in with a SPF, then I cleanse with an Oskia balm/gel when I get back and shower.

Olli beautiful eye makeup this morning!

Atrocity Hello! It's normally recommended to use vitamin C away from retinol - I think most here use their vit C in the morning and retinols etc at night. Both can cause skin irritation (especially in sunnier weather) so it may be the addition of the vit C (and low SPF) that's causing issues.

You'll probably be advised to increase your SPF to at least 30 if not 50, if you're using retinol or other actives like vit C, otherwise you risk more skin damage. And it's important that your SPF also has effective UVA coverage (which isn't shown in its SPF value which shows effectiveness against UVB - there's a star system for UVA coverage). Which one are you using at the moment?

AtrocityNeedles · 14/05/2018 11:44

Thank you everyone for the welcome! Tsmummy, I think I might have given myself the skin irritation by combining the Vit C and the Retinol....that makes sense.

At the moment I'm using the Glossier SPF15 but I was thinking of getting the AlumierMD SPF40, just been meaning to go to my local beauty salon to test the different colours. For now, I've dialled back the skincare and kept to cleansing, eye serum, hyaluronic acid and basic moisturiser. I feel like a spotty teenager! Shock

botemp · 14/05/2018 12:24

Tsnmummy, I just got back from my (non-cosmetic) derm earlier this morning for an eczema flare up and was discussing some Retin-A for my body (stretch marks from weight loss, but I have used it in some form in the past for KP). He actually suggested that it might be too strong (as my KP treatment had been really troublesome and difficult to manage) and if I happened to be in France sometime soon to get some A313 as it's much milder but still effective and it's a synthetic retinoid so less of an issue to use in the summer.

Please note, my derm is not encouraging semi-illegal behaviour, A313 falls within the EU guidelines it just doesn't get sold outside of France much. I can actually get it through my pharmacy (without a prescription) but they charge an extortionate price as it's a special order. Obviously, rec was specific for me and my medical history. I was actually planning a quick weekend to France within the next month or so but have seen you can get it online through French pharmacies, a bit like the Boots/Superdrug acne clinic setups.

I'm looking at Soin et Nature, shipping seems reasonable too, the site's a little clunky though as it's all literal translations, so am still checking that it's actually legitimate. My derm also recommended getting Laluset gel with it to combat any flakiness should it occur, though he didn't think there'd be any in my case. It's a hyaluronic acid gel without any occlusives, it does contain fragrance. SeN seem to sell that too, also saw they have a 313 version for the eye area as well which could be of interest for anyone looking for an affordable eye cream with an effective retinoid, however, I do remember someone whose username is escaping me at the moment (but she's got gorgeous hair and lovely temperamental horses and I'm sure the name will come to me once I've hit post) using it occasionally due to sensitive patchwork skin and it being quite strong but effective, so probably only for the hard weathered to use around the eyes.

Atrocity, welcome and please use a higher SPF sunscreen. 15 is barely scraping by, and that's assuming you're using the required amount (which almost no one use). 30 really is the minimum but this time of year 50 is preferred and you need to be reapplying it every two hours if outdoors.

Without knowing what you're specifically using, I can only theorise that I find it unlikely it's a Vit C issue. Vit C in a cream form lacks an adequate delivery system to deliver high doses (that are usually the cause of irritation) so it's a cream with either an effectively low (and less likely to irritate) Vit C dose or more likely a derivative that are also less likely to irritate or have issues working alongside retinol. I think the lack of sunscreen protection is more of a concern and possible culprit. Equally it could be another ingredient in the cream, eg. they often include citrus essential oils in Vit C products for the smell and they're highly irritating.

Frezyderm has gone down in price on amazon, just ordered more

Ollivander84 · 14/05/2018 13:03

I am being v bad and only wearing Cerave moisturiser with SPF 25 today. However I'm in the office 9.30am - 6pm and not using retinol etc so...
tomorrow is a day at the stables so back to Frezyderm

SophieLion · 14/05/2018 14:49

Tant, IIRC Dr Sam says that niacinamide helps the skin better tolerate retinoids.

Atrocity - I will also join the "spotty teenager" club Grin

Enid how is the dress search going?

SophieLion · 14/05/2018 14:52

Sorry forgot to say thanks MrsD. A lot of people seem to use and like CeraVe products but I haven't come across them here at all. I think they're a US company, right? Obviously not filtered down to Greece yet.

TantricTwist · 14/05/2018 15:11

Sophie are you meant to use the Niacinamide the same time as the retinoid ie both in the Pm or one in the am and the other in the pm Confused but happy to acquiesce Grin for the greater good of my skin.

Hi atrocity I can't help other than you definitely need SPF30 or over

mint when I looked at frezyderm yesterday it had gone up in price !!!

SophieLion · 14/05/2018 15:27

Tant, I'm starting with a caveat that I'm not sure what I'm talking about! Plus I'm not using anything really on my face apart from the tret so no personal experience.

However, from what Dr Sam said and the responses I got on this thread I assume people use moisturiser with niacinamide after they've applied their retinoid in the evening (perhaps waiting a bit first?)

SophieLion · 14/05/2018 15:30

Bo's anti-ageing info sheet has niacinamide in the evening after retinoid or acid.

TantricTwist · 14/05/2018 16:12

Sophie thanks, I'll start using the niacinamide then after my retinoid

mintmagnummm · 14/05/2018 16:26

Tant have a look now it's definitely gone down, just over £16

Tsmummy08 · 14/05/2018 16:50

Bo Thanks for the recommendation - it looks like the A313 is basically a 0.2% retinol, is that right? It seems to be available on Amazon for about £20 or cheaper the French sites - that makes it a better bet than something like SC or Medik8 0.3 retinol.... which are £26-45 ish.

I just want something that I can use with minimal irritation over the summer. I used TO 2% retinoid last year which did nothing as far as I could tell!

SophieLion · 14/05/2018 17:35

And one annoying thing about the Frezyderm is that you have no idea when it's running out. You can't tell a thing from the packaging and it just suddenly stops pumping.Angry At least I had a new one waiting!

mintmagnummm · 14/05/2018 18:00

Sophie that's why I ordered another one when I saw price had gone down, just gives me peace of mind!

SallieSallow · 14/05/2018 18:12

Good point about the frezyderm Sophie though I've got other spfs to tide me over and mine only takes a day to come with amazon prime. I might try the tinted one next time.

I'm another one that used TO niacinamide and zinc, didn't like the texture and didn't think it did anything so ditched. I really want to get my hands on cerave PM, wish boots would hurry up with it. I have friends over from the US next month so wondering if they might bring me some though they like to travel light so don't want to put them out.

Miffy do you think Skin actives and active formulas are affiliated? As the websites and packaging look similar and even the product blurbs sound the same. I'm getting on fine with active formulas Vit c, I'll need to repurchase soon I think - that's another one where you've no idea how much is left. I notice skin actives have a very reasonably priced brow and lash serum that I'd like to try once the revitabrow is finished which won't be long either now.
