Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Peony general advice is to use Vit C in the mornings because it's an anti oxidant and will help protect your skin from free radicals during the day. I use it in the morning after a gentle cleanse. I use retinol every other night (LRP Redermic R). If not using that I use a moisturiser with niacinimaide. Do share your routine when you're ready, even if you feel it's not complete. I found it really useful, getting advice here on when to use certain things.

botemp · 13/05/2018 09:32

Yes, meant to point that out as well, thanks Pupsie, brain not as cooperative at the moment.

Vit C for general ageing/brightening purposes is preferred in the AM as it boosts the efficacy of your SPF and the low pH formulation often doesn't play well with other actives. If you're using it at a high concentration (usually over 20%) for pigmentation issues it's usually used at night as they're really difficult to use as they're quite gritty and don't allow for much layering and makeup sits terribly on tip. There's not much point to using Vit C in the AM and PM, the body can only absorb up to 20% concentrations per 24hrs and most on here use a Vit C with at least a 15% concentration (which is plenty for most, anything over 10 is good, below is arguably pointless).

Thanks for the more technical explanation Bo. Good you're ok x

HausMaus · 13/05/2018 10:52

Have just been reading through botemp's excellent summaries on sunscreen and wondered if anyone could recommend a good mineral sunscreen to use while breastfeeding? If it exists, one that sits well under makeup would be nice but not essential. If it's maternity pay friendly even better!

botemp · 13/05/2018 11:03

Haus, I generally rec the SkinCeuticals Sheer mineral defence but it wouldn't meet your budget requirements, I'd wager.

A good second choice is the Bioderma Photoderm Mineral. It's a spray which is not so handy, especially when gauging how much to use, so easiest is to spray it into your hands, then apply to face. It's cheaper if bought directly from France (especially in the giant packaging) but escentual often runs promos on French pharmacy at around a 1/3 off.

I had no idea that Vichy and Skinceuticals has the same parent company - interesting snippet Bo.

I would like to start a vit C again in the AM but think I need to finish purging first and then get approval from my derm. I have a few scars that I would like to start tackling.

SophieLion · 13/05/2018 13:49

Lonesurvivor · 13/05/2018 13:51

Hi all, I'm just bookmarking so I can catch up with you all later when I've time to have a read.
Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

miffy2 · 13/05/2018 15:48

Sophie no I have not used the Vichy C. I was tempted by it when my first DE ran out but I couldn't find it locally and ended up buying the Skin Actives instead.

Speaking of which - I have an area on my temple that has some raised and textured skin and has some discolouration. It bothers me but not hugely and I have it on my list of things to discuss with my Derm on my next visit. However for the past week or so, when I squirted my Vitamin C into my palm, I have dipped my finger in it and applied directly to that area and then the rest of my face. It really has made a difference to it; I am very impressed. I will continue to do this and see if it improves further.

TantricTwist · 13/05/2018 16:51

So I finally cracked open my Frezyderm spf30 today and I love it. Such a lovely consistency which sinks in beautifully.

I wore it without moisturiser underneath or any makeup over the top. My skin isn't oily or greasy. And happily my skin is looking like normal skin should.

I also really like the TO Vit C powder so far.

HausMaus · 13/05/2018 16:59

Thanks @botemp, will give the Bioderma a go.

JDSTER · 13/05/2018 17:13

Tant frezyderm is definitely better without moisturiser underneath. I was only using toleriane fluid but I found the combination of the two made me oily as the day progressed

SophieLion · 13/05/2018 17:49

Thanks Miffy.
Tant, I also wear frezyderm without moisturiser or anything underneath.

Does anyone use a niacinamide serum? Or (if using niacinamide) do you get your dose from a moisturiser? Thanks.

JDSTER · 13/05/2018 18:08

sophie I get niacinamide from moisturiser (LRP double repair) but unfortunately not available in UK. I’m asking DH to pick up on his trip to the states this week. Previously used cerave pm moisturiser, which has niacinamide in, but it became prohibitively expensive and hard to come by on Amazon.
I tried TO niacinamide and zinc serum but found it sticky so didn’t persist with it. It’s marketed at acne, since it has the zinc as well.

TantricTwist · 13/05/2018 18:11

I also tried TO Niacinamide with zinc and didn't like it. Too sticky and gave me a rash.

Pupsiecola · 13/05/2018 20:16

I was using a separate Niacinamide product (Dr. Traub or something similar - I can't find it online now). However, I felt it was too strong. I am using it in either Cerave or Elta MD at night now.

Can someone please link to the correct Frezyderm product, and are people buying it on the Frezyderm website?

TIA

botemp · 13/05/2018 20:37

Pupsie, I've linked where and which Frezyderm to buy at the bottom of the OP.

Sophie, I'm with everyone else that Niacinamide as a stand alone serum didn't ever do much for me. I have it in my LRP Toleriane night cream, and I might get an Asian first treatment essence with a 2-5% of it in sometime in the future but the night cream on its own seems plenty for me. I've had it in some SPFs as well and it was quite nice to have it in there too.

miffy is that the skin actives vitamin C you're impressed with?

their agave lip balm is divine

This is one of my faves! I have it in Smashed with a back up tube. Lovely in summer. Love Bite lush lip tints too. Quite pigmented and they smell gorgeous and taste like sugar

miffy2 · 13/05/2018 21:09

Enid, yes, the Skin Actives 20%. I will definitely RP it, although I have an unopened DE waiting for me in the meantime. It is not half as elegant in terms of packaging (the label was a bit sticky and the bottle feels cheap) but the pump is great and the product works, so that is what counts, right?!

I adore all the Bite Beauty stuff. I have two tubes of the plain agave balm and will pick up a tinted one when I go to the US. I have a couple of their lipsticks too and they are lovely to wear (and smell/taste great!) - can't wait to check out the full range when I go as I have had to buy online up till now.

Pupsiecola · 13/05/2018 22:10

Loops. I missed that Bo. Thank you.

peonylover22 · 13/05/2018 22:19

Thanks Bo and Pupsie. I will hunt down the Vichy C!

Tsmummy08 · 14/05/2018 07:11

Hello all! I've bookmarked your empties Miffy as I think we've got similar skin and you've given me some ideas :)

Frezyderm AND retin-A users - I've been using mine for a week or so and I'm not sure it's actually working very well as a SPF for me.. My skin is basically a light shade of pink at the moment Blush and I had a similar issue last year when using Biore, then a series of physical sunscreens including Bareminerals Prep Step. I apply Cicabio or another SPF first thing before gym and school run then apply Frezyderm after my shower. I reapply if I'm going to be out in the sun in the afternoon but generally I'm indoors all day. I can't reapply if I'm wearing makeup so would use a spray in that case.

And still the pinkness. Is it retin-A? Is it other actives like acids? I don't know. Anyone else experiencing this? Last year I stopped using retin-A from June to September. I know it's not advised but I'd rather that, than damage my skin further.

So any recommendations for less irritating vit A products given I react badly to strong retinols? LRP Redermic? I had my eye on Medic8 R-retinoate but the price!

And anyone else feel that Frezyderm isn't enough for them if they are also using vitamin A products?

Thanks all

Pupsiecola · 14/05/2018 07:35

Tsmummy I've tried a couple of more pricey/stronger Retinols but had to come back to LRP. I was using it twice a week but I'm up to every other night now. I'm wondering whether to go to every night before upping my game to a stronger product.

When you go out for a run do you actually cleanse after and reapply SPF? I do, but I worry about over cleansing...

JDSTER · 14/05/2018 07:54

pupsie I got frezy from chemists direct (I think it was called) ‘another seller’ via amazon as it was cheaper than amazon itself
