Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

I got some cold pressed castor oil for my lashes instead of rapid lash as it was a lot cheaper and heard lots of people saying they prefer it but how on earth do u apply it to ur lashes without making eyes blurry???

TantricTwist · 09/06/2018 19:20

mint I would probably use and old clean mascara wand

TantricTwist · 09/06/2018 19:33

mint you've reminded me to re-tint my eyelashes

Nofilter · 09/06/2018 19:44

Hello,

Please can I ask how I get a proper diagnosis of whether I have Rosacea or not? I’ve been told this by a therapist who did me a facial and it looks the same as what is listed on google basically.

I spent two weeks in the Maldives in 2014 and didn’t wear ANY sunscreen I literally ruined my face, nose and neck - horror!

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2018 19:52

Tant that's what I just did but it didn't go to well! 🙄

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2018 19:52

Nofilter a gp could diagnose it, failing that a dermatologist.

miffy2 · 09/06/2018 19:55

mint I sometimes use castor oil. i dip the mascara wand it in, then apply to my brows and then the excess to my lashes - this way I don't overload the lashes. I only do it just before bed too :)

SallieSallow · 09/06/2018 20:11

Nofilter I'd start with your GP, I've heard other posters here on S&B say that their GP prescribed products that really helped their rosacea.

If the GP isn't much help you could go to a dermatologist if you can afford to pay privately, I don't think the GP would refer you unless yours was a very severe case and you had already tried various prescription products which hadn't helped.

I definitely would not add any actives/acids/exfoliating products though. If your cleanser is perfumed I'd move to a milder unperfumed one, I don't know much about embrolisse (and I've massacred that spelling!) but it looks quite mild. La Roche posay toleriane is a good range for sensitive skin so you could try one of their cleansers and moisturisers, it's reasonably priced in boots but a lot of us here use easyparapharmacie (EPP) where it's usually cheaper.

TantricTwist · 09/06/2018 20:13

mint in that case I'd probably use a small eyeshadow brush and just brush it along my lash line as that where its going to grow from anyway.

mintmagnummm · 09/06/2018 20:23

Thanks miffy I'm not applying it to my brows, I am going to do my lashes right before bed in future though!

Good idea tant i'll try that thanks 👍🏻

Nofilter · 09/06/2018 20:38

Hi,

So I’ve dived right in and bought all of these recommended products... and am going to start the 6-8 week suggested routine when it all arrives.

I must say, what a kind bunch you are! Thankyou Bo for sharing your wisdom freely it’s most appreciated!!

I chose:

La Roche Posey Cleanser
La Roche Posey Thermal water
Superdrug simply pure
Cerave PM
The Ordinary squaline

And I plan to use the Frezyderm I bought yesterday as a primer after everything else and avoid makeup where I can. I quite like being bare faced anyway, I’m a stick hair up in a bun and go to the stables kind of girl haha!

Quite excited to start this and see the results.

I have a couple of really annoying blocked pores on either side of my nose, it’s like the skin has grown over them so it’s bumpy. I did have them zapped a few years ago but they just came back.

Does anybody have any experience with these / know how I could fix them for good?

I’ll use my Embrolysse as a body moisturiser I think when the new products arrive.

I did also buy The Ordinary AHA peeling solution as I was planning to start off with a peel... should I wait on that now?

I’m pretty confident I do have Rosacea so the above routine is the right way to go...

I'd really recommend seeing a dermatologist/GP for your skin texture issues, Nofilter. It's not an easy fix.

Assuming you do indeed have Rosacea, I don't recommend using the AHA peeling solution, ever. Return it, and actually, I wouldn't recommend the TO Squalane either, it's probably too heavy for you.

I also don't advocate radical changes, so make sure to introduce things gradually and one at a time with plenty of time in between. An entire new routine is not some miracle worker, you need to understand what product is doing what, whether you're reacting to something or not, etc.

Apologies, everyone, didn't realise linking a Wayne Goss video was so controversial Blush, I always thought he catered to teens Confused and never pay much attention to him but these type of videos seem to always come up on my suggested feed, along with sad girls crying about their breakup Hmm

Thanks Sallie I’ve just cancelled my rip off amazon order and saved £30!!

EPP is an amazing find!

SallieSallow · 09/06/2018 21:03

Based on people I know with rosacea Nofilter that looks like it to me but please do see your GP for a proper diagnosis.

I agree with Bo massive NO to the peeling solution. Which la Roche posay cleanser did you get? And where did you find cerave PM?? It's been out of stock in the U.K. for what seems like forever now though supposed to be coming to boots soon.

I've just used the LRP hydrating cleanser and loved it, lovely and gentle but still left my skin feeling really clean and (for JDSTER) no oily film Grin

Nofilter · 09/06/2018 21:04

Thanks Bo - I will definitely take my time. Would you suggest starting from the top of he list in that case? The cleanser first followed by the thermal water a week later and so on?

I’ll return The Ordinary products.

Would you suggest for the extra layer I get La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baum B5?

Nofilter · 09/06/2018 21:09

Sallie I got the La Roche Posay Tolerian Dermo cleanser, I’m working off the “Barrier Repair Protocol” linked at the top of the thread.

I bought the Cerave PM on Ebay £25 including postage... it’s £27.89 for 3oz on Amazon though is available...

I shall book in with my GP to get a diagnosis - never even knew there we possible treatments for this red skin!

Grin
Shop · 09/06/2018 21:18

Sallie is this the Cerave pm but without having the pm in the name? Timeless Uk have started stocking some Cerave
www.timeless-uk.com/products/new-arrival-cerave-facial-moisturising-lotion-no-spf-52ml

botemp · 09/06/2018 21:19

Nofilter, I prefer not to 'diagnose' anyone as it is really best left to a dermatologist or GP and they will have a better grasp of the type of medications suitable for you. The proposed routine would not interfere with that, but definitely seek out a GP or dermatologist for a proper diagnosis and access to medications.

Why do you think you need an extra layer on top of the Cerave?

I don't count thermal water as a separate product, so you can start on those two first. I'd then introduce the Cerave and then the superdrug serum. Generally allow two weeks between each product, cleansers are quicker, usually within a few days you'll know whether it's working well for you or not.

Last time I looked on amazon the cerave PM was £80 or something daft Shock your price is much more reasonable Nofilter but it used to be about £13 on amazon prime so I'm still miffed about the price hike.

shop the one you posted is in different packaging but looks like it will the same as the PM as it says ceramides, niacin and hyaluronic acid - I think I'll give that a one try as even with the p&p it's under £20, thank you Smile

SallieSallow · 09/06/2018 21:49

Sorry niacinamide not niacin!

miffy2 · 09/06/2018 22:19

You know you can get Cerave PM on iherb, right? I’ve mentioned that here before. It’s around $15 and they ship everywhere! I’ve bought it from them before.

JDSTER · 09/06/2018 22:26

nofilter it’s brave of you to put up your picture (I mean that in the nicest sense). Your skin looks very like my friends, who has rosacea. Definitely see you GP. Isn’t there something about a skin mite that can cause rosacea? There are other causes, my point being if you get a diagnosis you can discuss options for treatment. Personally, I’d do my homework on rosacea before an appointment then you can talk about your options.

sallie pleased you are without film Grin

SallieSallow · 09/06/2018 22:26

Miffy you did indeed and I looked on iHerb but the shipping was pretty expensive, so I parked it in the hope it would appear in boots soon. I think I'm being such a miser about it as it used be £12/£13 with free p&p on amazon prime and it's cheap as chips in the US so I get all huffy about paying more Grin
