Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Sallie yes I think they are the same company, more or less (I think that was discussed on one of these threads but can't remember 100%). Skin Acvites is the US/international site and Active Formulas is for the UK I think. I am in Ireland and ordered from S.A. as they had better choices at the time. With my Vit C serum I can just about see where I am at contents-wise if I hold the bottle up to the light. I have about 20-25% left.

I have the brow serum and have been using it for a month or two now. Am on the fence TBH. I had previously used iGlow lash serum and was very impressed, but because i used it on both my brows and lashes it got used up very quickly. This one has much more volume in the tube and is lasting well but I am not seeing the dramatic changes I saw with iGlow (my lashes got really long and I started seeing new brow hairs in places that had been bald for years) - I think I will bite the bullet and get the brow serum from iGlow next month.

Tsmummy08 · 14/05/2018 19:38

Talking of Active Formulas, they have a vitamin A cream with retinyl acetate - Bo did a rundown of the different vit A types and efficacy, can anyone link to it? Is anyone familiar with this one?

SallieSallow · 14/05/2018 19:39

Thanks Miffy I've just been holding my Vit c up to the light Grin but can't tell, which means it must be almost empty or my eyesight is even worse than I thought!

Thank you for the serum review, think I'll give it a miss and look at the iglow one. I'm using revitabrow at the moment and I'm getting some very sparse and patchy re-growth. I'll keep going till it's used up but it's quite expensive and the results aren't amazing - though my brows may well be a lost cause.

botemp · 14/05/2018 20:28

Hmm interesting, I've just looked at the iGlow and skin actives eyebrow/lash serums. Iglow has the Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 in it, which is also in the Chantecaille mascara and brow serum that gets great results for me. That and the -12 version are generally the non drug version ingredients that are most likely to stimulate hair growth. The SA doesn't contain it. However, IIRC someone on here (I think it was Dulcimena) tried the Gosh serum which also contains it and didn't see much effect so I'm assuming it may be very individual and/or down to formulation (as the Gosh is quite affordable).

I put Niacinamide to use at night in the info sheet because most people prefer not to layer it with Vitamin C as some combinations of products can cause flushing. It's harmless but not exactly pleasant. When I wrote that sheet a lot were using TO which did have the flushing effect.

Niacinamide is a good all-rounder, can be used AM or PM. It's anti inflammatory and helps regulate skin barrier health, inhibiting TEWL, hence why it's used in combination with Retinol, to mitigate the side effects somewhat. It also has brightening properties and can help with pigmentation. With acne it helps minimise sebum production. It's a vitamin so much like vitamin c helps with free radical damage (hence why it's a helpful ingredient to have in an SPF).

All round winner, it's easy to see why it would be part of a basic actives routine. Easily remembered as the 'ABC' for a balanced routine of the different vitamins that support and enhance each other:

Vitamin A - a retinoid

Vitamin B - Niacinamide (B3) though Panthenol (B5) has some great properties too, especially in acneic skin and it doesn't need to be an either/or situation.

Vitamin C

Most of the early research on Niacinamide is from Proctor and Gamble. 5% is the 'ideal' dose as that's what the research predominabtly supports and is a concentration tolerated well by many, it's far less finicky than other actives. The entire Olay line is originally based on Niacinamide as the star ingredient.

Just remembered the LRP Toleriane hydrating cleanser also contains Niacinamide, that is specifically formulated for skin undergoing Tret and similar to soothe and minimise compromising the barrier further whilst cleansing when it's exposed to water, so it doesn't even need to be in a leave on product.

Oh, and whilst the memory seems to be cooperating, poster I mentioned previously with enviable hair and lovely temperamental horses was yongnian, of course.

Sorry, Ts, a full rundown isn't really sparking anything. Maybe it was on the beautifulwithbrains blog? Not familiar with retinal acetate myself.

Sallie if you are ordering from iGlow there is a €10 reduction using the code LAURABROWS (from a YT-er called Laura's Views - she used the eyelash serum and had amazing results so she has been raving about the products since). Not sure how long this code is valid for but there always seems to be one :)

SallieSallow · 14/05/2018 22:11

Thank you Miffy the iglow is rather expensive but from what Bo says it's typically the expensive ones that work Grin I'll probably wait until I've finished the revitabrow though. It is working albeit slowly so maybe I just need to give it more of a chance.

SallieSallow · 14/05/2018 22:14

It's actually rapidbrow I'm using not revitabrow, I always get them confused Blush

Revitabrow is another very expensive one sold on Qvc, I'm wary of it as I tried the revitalash & it made me grow little lashes under my eyes Shock

JDSTER · 15/05/2018 11:04

Lots to catch up on. I’m using these two products to get my niacinamide ‘fix’. As others have said, it works well with retinoids so I use this moisturiser at night, after differin

No further on the dress front Sophie x

Things are worse so at the last bit now. Still have to get a dress but it feels weird looking at them. Bit stunned atm. No idea what to do or what's to think. x

EnidButton · 15/05/2018 13:02

Haven't read properly but I use rapidbrow and rapid lash and have had a lot of success with them both. Interested in trying other ones at a later date as they don't seem to last long. Results are impressive though I think it really depends on how you react to them. Some people don't get any growth, some they're like bambi and Cara Delevigne had a child.

Ollivander84 · 15/05/2018 13:11

Can definitely tell the sun is here - I have vitiligo but only on my hand Confused
In winter you can't see it as I'm so pale!

Pupsiecola · 15/05/2018 13:15

Think I must have missed something Enid. I do hope you're okay xx

I've caught up now. Flowers Enid.

MrsDOnofrio · 15/05/2018 15:12

Enid - you have my utmost sympathy. I've been in a similar position and it's like standing still, mired in grief, waiting for the worst to happen while at the same time having to conduct a 'normal' life. Thinking of you Flowers

AtrocityNeedles · 15/05/2018 15:22

Enid, I know you don't know me from Adam but Flowers

I've been slathering SPF50 for the last few days, nothing too fancy, Ambre Solaire while I get a better one, and I'm happy to report my skin is starting to look better.

OTOH when did my décolletage start looking so red and wrinkly? Shock

SophieLion · 15/05/2018 15:48

Enid Thanks** and ❤️ from me (another tiny person who is here for you).

mintmagnummm · 15/05/2018 16:05

Goes without saying Enid Thanks

What does everyone here have for lunch? It's the one meal I really struggle with!

Ollivander84 · 15/05/2018 16:08

I'm obsessed with a salad at the minute
Leaves, avocado, red onion, feta, some quinoa, cucumber and cherry tomatoes
Sometimes I like ham, scrambled egg and mushrooms
Or an omelette

SallieSallow · 15/05/2018 18:30

Enid Flowers another tiny person sending love and thinking of you ❤️

SallieSallow · 15/05/2018 18:34

I'm going to plug on with rapidbrow, mine seems to have lasted me quite a while but I don't take it with me when I travel so I'm a bit stop start with it which is probably why my results are slow.

I don't eat lunch as I'm doing intermittent fasting in another attempt to lose weight. I don't mind it as I'm usually busy in work/have meetings etc so I don't really have much time to eat or think about food.
