It's day 23 and there are just 7 days of Dedicate left. Well done yogis for getting onto the mat in your own way and at your own pace. We’re here to support each other as we yoga to the end of Dedicate, through to Feb and beyond.

My diet starts tomorrow...

I'm now heavier than Ive ever been when not pg! 😩😔

I'm planning on yoga for weight loss.

quirkychick · 18/02/2019 08:16

Well, I've lost weight, but it's due to the lurgy Sad. According to my omron scales that includes losing 5% muscle, no wonder I'm struggling to do my normal yoga routines. 67chevvy I find yoga doesn't help me lose weight, per se, but it helps me tone up and complements other forms of activity by building strength and flexibility. Also, the desire to do some yoga every day filters into doing other activities every day. So helps me want to take care of myself and my health generally, I was originally only going to do some a few times a week in addition to doing weights but caught the yoga bug!

GreenHat you a right, the great thing about yoga is that you can choose a practice that fits you that day, like the yoga if you're sick, so you've still moved and stretched even if you haven't done a great big workout.

67chevvyimpala · 18/02/2019 08:41

I certainly feel more toned and people gave asked if I've lost weight..sadly not! :)

So I did care day 18 for the feet. Really didnt enjoy this one.

My knee hurts now!

I'm trying to stick to the daily sessions but I will switch for the running/cycling/climbing days!

I'll prob do core again and I'll try the weight loss one too.

I'm just glad I'm doing something every day.

My ds2 got up really early this morning so I started my practice at 8am which I've enjoyed.

Now the mornings are lighter I might set my alarm and try early morning yoga :)

Spudlet · 18/02/2019 09:01

My mental health has improved immensely through making this time for myself - DH now actively asks if I've practiced each evening and sends me off if not. I don't think I've lost weight (don't own any scales to check anyway) but I am definitely stronger and bendier, and more toned. And I have a valid reason to change into yoga pants and a comfy bra every night which is marvellous Grin

Did some freestyle last night as I just couldn't decide on a video - still under the weather so stuck Day 30 on for some company and did my own thing. Might just do the bedtime yoga again tonight, DS and I both had nasty coughs all night so none of us slept very well in the end. Roll on the end of cold season! 🤧😷

AugustRose · 18/02/2019 11:24

I enjoyed the yoga for the feet today, it's funny how we like different things isn't it. I felt really relaxed afterwards and added a Five Parks Morning session which really complimented the Adriene one and I feel good - very much helped by the warm sun shining in my window while lying in shavasana Grin

I haven't lost any weight either but it is making me feel more comfortable and I am adding extra bits. Since I started yoga about 3 years ago (with gaps in the middle) I have noticed that I am more aware of how I move about. I am much more careful when I am lifting/moving things to avoid injury.

I won't get to to much tomorrow as I am having a day out in Manchester with my 2 DDs (17 and 12), we're going on the train and it's a treat/present buying day for DD1 whose birthday it was on Friday and I am really looking forward to it.

quirkychick · 18/02/2019 14:52

Well, I take it back my energy must be returning. I managed a Shiva Rea Heart-Air flow, which isn't fast but has lots of backends and twists, then added a quick forward bend flow, as my back feels a lot better but it's moved into my hip, so wanted a good stretch. It felt good too, I was happy to manage a vinyasa flow without giving up part way.

AugustRose and others, I agree about yoga making you feel good, I really find it sets me up for the day. On a superficial level, it rid me of any spare tyre round the middle too (though, actually, that is beneficial to my health as well!).

Gumpendorf · 18/02/2019 15:17

Hi all! My silence/yoga abstention has been because it's been horrendous. I was told I needed surgery and was on today's list only to be told it may be too risky to operate (flaky bones post cancer and menopause) and I needed a CT scan first. So I'm out of the cast, in a splint (which is where I started), had the CT scan and will find out at the end of the week whether the consultant thinks the benefits outweigh the risks. I've already decided they don't.

So I'm hoping to start some gentle hands free yoga tomorrow (right now I just need a drink) to get my body working again after the constraints of the cast.

It's worth saying the NHS has been brilliant and I'm in awe of the patience and skill of the staff.

I rue the day I stepped out of the house last month.

Oh grumpendorf!!

What a roller coaster.

I hope your wrist continues to improve and thank you so much for starting this thread. Xxx

Spudlet · 18/02/2019 16:21

Oh my, Gumpendorf! What a time. Hope you are on the upswing again very soon Flowers

quirkychick · 18/02/2019 18:22

Flowers Gumpendorf how awful! I hope things get better soon for you.

GreenHatHacker · 18/02/2019 21:43

Poor gumpendorf! hoping that things get better for you very soon. You were our original inspiration in this, so sad that you are struggling.

Yoga for feet didn't really feel very yoga-y tonight - although liked the chance for my first pass at full supta virasana in a very long time (knee injury 18 months ago & still recovering).

Those of you aiming for weight loss - have you seen the Team RH guys? They have a public page on Facebook, plus a support community & app on subscription. Straight talking Geordies giving the no nonsense low down on nutrition and exercise. I'm following the eating guidelines, but instead of their exercises I'm doing our daily yoga plus two runs per week of couch to 5k (just can't fit in the recommended 3 runs). Lost about a pound a week since the beginning of the year and really noticing the combination of yoga, running & eating properly doing good things to my short, fat, 50 year old body!

67chevvyimpala · 19/02/2019 11:45

Day 18.
Head and heart.
Blimey this got me warm!!
I did manage better transitions though.

Spudlet · 19/02/2019 15:36

Went to a class again today. Felt all stretched and relaxed at the end, then made the mistake of calling dh to see if we needed anything other than milk, to be told ds had fallen off his bike and possibly cracked a tooth, then had to wind my way though 40,000 possible slight exaggeration sets of roadworks so it took twice as long to get home as usual. Ds seems fine, I am a wreck. I foresee an extra session of yoga for stress relief tonight 🙈

eurochick · 19/02/2019 22:02

I did an Adriene core session last night and it was pretty hardcore. I have serious DOMS now!

GreenHatHacker · 20/02/2019 07:59

Did the ' Yoga for Head & Heart reset' this morning (was only 24 mins, not the 34 on the chart). A slow start then as 67chevvy warned, warming up well to some active flow.

GreenHatHacker · 20/02/2019 08:01

I find the Core sessions tough too eurochick - have made a resolution to get at least one a week in, as I'm sure they do me good - all that pain must have some effect, right!?

67chevvyimpala · 20/02/2019 08:04

I’m doing yoga for paoas again today. I’ll do core again on Friday.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who got warm yesterday!

Haven’t got much time tomorrow so I’ll do one of the short ones.

67chevvyimpala · 20/02/2019 10:48

Blimey.

Pigeon pose is HARD!

AugustRose · 20/02/2019 11:05

Oh Gumpendorf poor you, I hope things improve for you soon.

I did yesterday's Head & Heart session followed by the quick 7 minutes yoga boost from earlier in the month. Enough to get my heart going and head into the day.

67chevvy I used to really struggle with pigeon pose and hurt myself by trying too hard. It is easier now but I have to take is carefully and stay more upright to avoid hurting my hip and lower back.

67chevvyimpala · 20/02/2019 11:21

Yes I'm quite upright and use my fingertips.

I cant imagine ever being able to put my hands to my heart!

I have fibro and my shoulders, hips and back are incredibly painful.

I also have Achilles tendonitis in both ankles.

Doing yoga has REALLY helped.

quirkychick · 20/02/2019 13:00

I really struggled with pigeon pose (and cow legs) when I had hamstring tendonitis, and pretty much substituted a forward fold with crossed legs. You can do pigeon on your back and also sat on a blanket/block/cushion (or 2). I still need a foam block, as my back leg is slightly bent still, I can't put my hands on my heart but can do on finger tips. I can forward bend in pigeon now and even rest my head on my hands on the floor. I now enjoy it as it's a lovely stretch, but it's taken me a while!

My current nemesis is gate pose and seated wide-legged forward fold. Stiff hips.

GreenHatHacker · 20/02/2019 20:26

Just done the 7 min yoga for runners, having dragged myself out of bed where I'd collapsed after one of my long couch to 5k runs. Still too much for my knee to do the bent knee-foot grabby pose (mermaid variation?) but did enjoy the shoulder openers - it's amazing how hard the arms work when running!

67chevvyimpala · 20/02/2019 21:17

I'm planning the 5 min morning yoga tomorrow as I'm busy all day and ds2 has just told me he wants to do it with me! :)

quirkychick · 21/02/2019 09:45

I did the Head and Heart flow again today (I did it earlier in the month), I have to say I found it easier this time, so must be getting some of my strength back Smile. My back twinge has just turned into upper back stiffness, so any heart opening poses and stretches feel good.

GreenHat I can't grab my back foot either, my hamstrings protest in pain. I can rest my foot against something (a chair) so my foot is in the air, in a working towards it kind of way. I think you can cushion your knee too.

Spudlet · 21/02/2019 09:51

Did the first half of a stress relief one last night then switched to a beginners one as dh has been suffering from stress and generally feeling low, so persuaded him to give some yoga a go. I think he quite liked it? Hoping he will keep with it as I think it will be of benefit.

It does add a degree of challenge as our living room is a bit small for two adults to practice in and we only have one mat between us. Grin Had to skip downward dog as I just didn't have enough grip on the carpet to be safe! I'm planning on getting myself a new mat soon though so dh can have my old one then, then if he gets right into it, he can upgrade as well.
