I assume the OP has been in that job for quite some time and is in a sector (public service?) where it is difficult to get rid of people.

I keep thinking that I would like to be made redundant too but I think my current employer is way too tight and daft to offer decent voluntary redundancy terms. Instead they try to get people to quit. I am not quitting and also currently doing as little as possible and hoping as well that they will pay me off.

Actually he’s apparently a pretty down to earth guy and from what I’ve heard absolutely hates rude people like this.

The job market isn't great out there OP. If you want to protect your future, you will need a good reference and not a history of being sacked. Apply for something else if you're not happy.
