Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort.

Seven blankets already with women on the rocky road of cancer treatment in Candy's name. Love in every stitch we say and it really is true. Together we go on, Candy is with us every step. Star

For anyone joining us, and please do, this is an ongoing project, just jump right in, this explains what we are doing and all crafting info. Thank you EVERYONE! x

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here.. and third here

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron

Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. ALL welcome over there.

Thank you so much Thanks

had a shitty day at work today :( now sitting with my woolly hug crochet and my faith in humanity is starting to get restored

bookbook · 28/02/2017 21:13

Evening !

You lot have been busy today
What gorgeous squares !
I have been at DD's looking after my lovely DGS ,-my mind ( and eyes) have been totally boggled by Lego......the bits are tiny , so no squares today.
I am actually doing Chernobyl stuff atm , but noticed the call for knitting patterns. I will try and make sense of my files, and see if I can make any of them readable/useable..... Grin
Witch - I have done that nosegay pattern a couple of times , its not so hard, you just need to concentrate in truth!
Crafty - The Bella Coco 'willow square' on youtube is pretty , and not too tricky :)

SaladDressing · 28/02/2017 22:34

Jux and Furry I hold you both entirely responsible for another evening where nothing got done at home! I managed the spiral, can't decide yet whether I enjoyed it or not but very satisfying to have done something different. I may have a go at a 12" version, watch this space...

Lovely squares from everyone, I really love seeing what others are doing. Zing that patten is beautiful.

All the lovely yarn but no crochet tonight. Have been having a few drinks and laughs with very good friends. It was very much needed as life is not easy at the moment. Being able to come here on a day to day basis & feel the huge warmth & encouragement is wonderful. Making squares for a good cause has really helped me in many ways.

Yarn pushers - keep on keeping on! You never know where or when your kindness and positive vibes might be helping.

VittysCardigan · 28/02/2017 23:52

Ps 8 minutes left to vote! Fingers crossed

Lucysdiamonds · 01/03/2017 00:09

Thanks Smile

I'll knit a few more before I send them off.

FurryLittleTwerp · 01/03/2017 06:58

Ooh that's a nice one, Salad Smile

I'll be crocheting on the train & in cafes today, so plain squares on the agenda, as I don't need a recipe or multiple balls for those Grin

Been browsing the new Woolly Hugs web pages and FB link ( not on FB myself but it will let you view the photos) and thrilled to see the beautiful donations for all the projects.
Many thanks to the Fettlers, aka Construction Crew, for making our Candy squares into blankets "with love in every stitch".

Don't worry Yia, it won't stay on the plate long enough to burn cos I'm a greedy piggy

I keep checking in for news!

RedGrapeCornSnake · 01/03/2017 14:54

Beautiful stunning squares on here, I'm feeling like I need to up my crochet game! I've happily mastered the closed granny square now though so I'm going to do a few more of those before moving on. These are my latest trio, I still need to deal with the peskies

Jux · 01/03/2017 19:01

LEM your square posted at 11pm-ish is lovely, really really lovely. (I don't suppose you can link to a pattern?).

You people doing/who have done spirals - they're fab! I'll be trying again when I have a bit more energy. sticking with plain atm.

Hoping Stylecraft are sensible. I got a few votes in - people who were here, visitors etc - when the link was first up, but the recent one just took me to a page which said I'd already voted.

[crossed fingers]

TheoriginalLEM · 01/03/2017 19:23

Jux its from a book called granny squares by susan pinner. From memory, you do a 4 chain foundation, then triple crochet into the round 12 times. Then you do 1 triple one chain, , groups of 3 triples into the space , chain 4 1dc into every third triple stitch, then in the corners 3tr ch2 3tr, 3 dc into the side loops, then just rows of triple doing 1 tr 1 ch 1 tr in the corners. ish :)

bookbook · 01/03/2017 20:38
  • no news? pah! I will get doing another square, - if possible with fingers crossed :) I thought to put a link on for an easy knitting square, using a chart. It needs adjusting for size ( I took it down to 6", but could easily go up to 12"). The rays of the sun are supposed to have beads on, but I just made them a textured purl stitch instead. Knitted Sun Square
MadisonAvenue · 01/03/2017 20:46

I was just popping in to see if there was news too book

Spindelina · 01/03/2017 20:49

I've got a book waiting for me at the library :D 100 Afghans to knit and crochet. Should be some ideas in there. I'm a methodical sort, so I think I'll start at 1 and work my way through until it gets recalled.

I say "I". DH walks past the library much more frequently than I do, so it was much more sensible to put it on his card. He's not overly impressed but couldn't think of a counter-argument!
