Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort.

Seven blankets already with women on the rocky road of cancer treatment in Candy's name. Love in every stitch we say and it really is true. Together we go on, Candy is with us every step. Star

For anyone joining us, and please do, this is an ongoing project, just jump right in, this explains what we are doing and all crafting info. Thank you EVERYONE! x

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here.. and third here

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. ALL welcome over there.

Thank you so much Thanks

Morning!

My current library book is this:

Mandalas to Crochet

But as I'm running low on colours I haven't done any (and I'd have to work out how to make them into a square). I've already renewed it once, and I'm planning on scanning the pages that are useful to me before I take it back........ There's a really good section on standing stitches and how to make it look uniform etc.

Jux · 18/04/2017 13:58

Book that square's so pretty, someone's going to look at their blanket and jump straight to that as their favourite square of all time!

Spin that's just brilliant.

bookbook · 18/04/2017 16:11

aw, thank you Jux . thats kind of you to say.
Not done any today, and am out tonight, so will have to see if I can get one started when I get back ( not a late do)

AmethystRaven · 19/04/2017 08:34

I've been wondering why you start a new round with 3 chains instead of a treble. I found out last night by accident - it looks dreadful! I only realised what I had done when I got to the end and it was all wrong. It was only round 3 so frogging wasn't so heartbreaking.

I love all the flowers book, Norman and DoubleR I'm going to give it a try. I can do a heart so I'm hoping a flower will be manageable.

bookbook · 19/04/2017 09:54

Morning!
well, I set off a square last night, so have been lazy and sat and finished it this morning. Its actually the middle of a bigger square, and could really do with another round to square it off more successfully, but its already a bit big at 6.5" with a made up round to solidify it. This is #2 in the Lavender/Meadow/Boysenberry set
Its a nice pattern, so I think I may do it up to a 12" another time

Amethyst - its certainly worth a go :)

That's beautiful book, the Meadow and Lavender combination is so pretty.

MadisonAvenue · 19/04/2017 10:15

Just noticed that we've almost filled this thread up!

bookbook · 19/04/2017 10:31

better warn them then Grin
@KnottyAndPistey - help!

bookbook · 19/04/2017 10:32

I am really liking the meadow/lavender too Madison - its a nice calm backdrop.

CraftyGirly90 · 19/04/2017 12:42

Been lurking for a few weeks but finally been able to send off a 'batch' of squares today and am slowly working my way through some more. Sort of put them on hold for a little bit as my friend has just had a beautiful baby girl so trying to finish off a blanket for her xx

bookbook · 19/04/2017 15:41

well, dropped off a parcel at the Post Office today. It is for Candy's. but with a note to say divert to Chernobyl if needed. I didn't quite send them all , have kept the last couple to finish off a set. They can go for the next posting :)

Jux · 19/04/2017 15:42

Yes, the meadow makes the lavender kind of glow. [glowy squares!]

DropZoneOne · 19/04/2017 19:05

Evening everyone. I've been admiring everyone's latest creations, some really beautiful squares, I love the flowers!

I've lost my crochet mojo since sending off chernobs squares. The deadline for candy and then chernobyl had me hooking like crazy but since then I can't get into it. I've tried starting a couple of new patterns but they've gone wrong and I end up frogging back and giving up.

Anyone else ever lost their way?

IAmNotAUserNumber · 19/04/2017 19:58

DropZone I've had a bit of a break too, from knitting. Sent off my Chernobs and 3 for ZLad's blanket, and then nothing for a week. Am now in middle of a Candy square which I started during a long car journey on Sunday and finished a Refugee hat. I think I need to do a few 3D items for a change, interspersed with Candy squares. Am planning to do more refugee items and start on twiddlemuffs. The muffs aren't part of the WH "stable" (yet? Wink ) but I know a lot of hospitals ask for them.

VittysCardigan · 19/04/2017 20:34

What are twiddlemuffs Iam? - not sure I want to google GrinGrin

IAmNotAUserNumber · 19/04/2017 20:42

These are twiddlemuffs Vitty - safely googleable 😀 www.whh.nhs.uk/_store/documents/twiddlemuffsknittingpattern.pdf

Basically knitted hand muffs with lots of bits and pieces on them for people with dementia to twiddle.
As well as a really good idea and apparently very effective, they're also a good way to use up leftover yarn.

bookbook · 19/04/2017 21:04

I think we all get there some times Drop - you need time for rest and reflection. I'm lucky in that I have an allotment , so I go and dig and plant, which is a nice balance to sitting doing squares. I also keep interested by different WIP - Little Hug/ Refugees/ some knitting for a relative, and am thinking of doing the premmie octopuses when I am ready for a change

bookbook · 19/04/2017 23:20

Dare I post? Grin
Just finished #4 of the Lavender/Meadow/Boysenberry
I did an easy granny spike this afternoon for #3 , but had a go at a trickier one tonight, with bullion stitch. Not quite as tidy as I would like, but a pretty design .
I may just go and do some textured knits for a while :)

Jux · 20/04/2017 00:05

I love all those squares book, and yours too, flutter. You're both very talented.

I've had a break from squares and have been doing a cardigan for dd (the one I have been desperately trying to find wool for!). DD eventually chose the Drops wool recomm for the pattern, but in a different colourway. I've just finsihed the body, and seeing the discussion about lavender and grass got me back in the mood.

I think this is lavender and grass but can't remember what colours I originally ordered, so could be variants - def Candy's colours, and is just wool I had left over so far.

(Must revisit Wool Warehouse to see my old order. I will not buy anything, I will not buy anything.)
