Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort.

Seven blankets already with women on the rocky road of cancer treatment in Candy's name. Love in every stitch we say and it really is true. Together we go on, Candy is with us every step. Star

For anyone joining us, and please do, this is an ongoing project, just jump right in, this explains what we are doing and all crafting info. Thank you EVERYONE! x

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here.. and third here

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. ALL welcome over there.

Thank you so much Thanks

I love seeing the squares, but I am always very nervous that mine are "wrong". Blush

Too big, or too loose, or too unfinished. I can see some of mine on the latest photos - just hope they are usable. Not like me to be insecure, but I feel very wobbly seeing them online!

bookbook · 24/02/2017 17:54

Afternoon!
well, only just nicely got in, tea is cooking, so a quick sit.
Sitting - I'm the same, and I am normally pretty happy with what I have done, but then I see others and wonder - so it goes with wanting to make them as good as you can :) don't panic!
I did buy a couple of balls of wool, ( for Chernobyl) but I mainly went to get baby wool for another cardigan for a relative . My nieces and nephews are producing at a rate of knots atm Grin
Hopefully will get down to knitting later :)

WhoKn0wsWhereTheTimeG0es · 24/02/2017 18:32

Marking spot, ordered new supplies of wool yesterday.

TheHatOfDoom · 24/02/2017 18:39

My friend and I are going for lunch and then cocktails tomorrow. It's our tradition to sit in the bar with some crochet ignoring any weird looks. Will be working on a square most likely.

MrsCoyote · 24/02/2017 19:24

Hello, I would love to join in for Zombie.
I haven`t crochet one square yet and have a question - how many squares you get from one ball?
I will order yarn from UK to be sent to central Europe so need to think about the postage. Thanks.

I tried some small samples and I found out I was actually able to do it Smile.

SOGS! (Save Our Granny Square)

The foundation chain was 6". This square is not. Is it without use? I can't add a border as there's not really anything to attach it to?

Argh!!!!

Confused

Evening all 🍷🥂🍺🍸🍻🥃

These were for Tunnock's blanket, but I thought I'd share here as it's the first crochet square I've done for a blanket.

I have all 21 balls of the Riot yarn. I talk more, & faster, than I knit/crochet. It's going to take me quite some time to get anywhere near using it all. So WHY do I have this overwhelming urge to order MORE? Admittedly in NON Candy Hug colours for Chernobyl, but it's not like I can't use what I have for that.

But on the plus side, I completed my first CTC square today. It had much much much much more frogging than a pond, but I got there eventually!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 24/02/2017 20:07

Photo would be handy

idiot

The squares are actually straight, but they were acting up when I pointed the iPad camera in their direction, little buggers!

Spindelina · 24/02/2017 20:12

MrsCoyote, I've just weighed two 12" crochet squares and they are 48g and 56g. So a bit less than two per ball I'd say.

RedGrapeCornSnake · 24/02/2017 20:17

Ooh new thread. Parking myself, wool and hook - time to crack on, I've only managed half a square today.
The Facebook wall looks gorgeous with so many amazing squares

Seven I bloody love your conga line of colours!

SpiralArchitect · 24/02/2017 20:30

Chipping Welcome to the wonderful world of yarn addiction. Buy more colours. You know you want to...Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on!

Bearfrills · 24/02/2017 20:50

Checking in and placemarking on the new thread. Fab squares everyone Star

FireflyGirl · 24/02/2017 21:11

Just checking in.

Only done 2 squares in the last 2 weeks #slacker.

Sent them all off today, though Halo

TheHatOfDoom · 24/02/2017 21:16

Anyone know if John Lewis stock stylecraft? I'll have some spare time tomorrow and would like some more yarn. But the lift to their habadashary genuinely scares me and I don't want to brave it if they probably won't have it.

pterobore · 24/02/2017 21:24

Here's the blanket that I joined that should be with woolly hugs hq soon. So many lovely squares and you can see how plain and patterned work so well together

Ah, well, the thing is, I've been in the Wonderful World of Yarn Addiction for a long time, it's just that I don't have much Stylecraft (just the 21 Riots).

However, given how much yarn I can use crocheting compared to knitting...maybe I do need more really not, but you know...

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 24/02/2017 22:24

TheHatOfDoom. JL don't online, so I doubt they would 'in store'. Sorry. If you order from Wool Warehouse tomorrow you'll probably get it Sunday though. Don't forget to use of the discount codes. I believe SC28 is still working or CHARITY. I think a couple of others have good prices/discounts, but I don't know how quickly they deliver.

pterobore. Lovely job 😊

bookbook · 24/02/2017 22:31

Evening!
a bit of a slacker here too - only one 6" done tonight - a bit slow :)
Now flutter ( DD actually) - how big is the square so far ( ignore the subtle bump for help!)
pterodore that is just wonderful

sittnginthesun. I've just realised tonight, when looking for something on an old thread, that the reason it used to feel less stressful was that it was before we could post photos on MN! We all just did what we could & posted them off. We only really saw them when the blankets were completed.

I 💕 seeing all the squares, but it can be a little intimidating. For me it's more the sheer quantity others manage, but I figure every square helps! If your squares are made with love, then they're perfect 💐

Flutterwoc that's a lovely square! Just send it. K&P or a Construction Crewer will be able to work their magic with it.

Vitty. I'm very glad I learned to drive as a teenager when I knew everything & I was immortal 😂 However, if my 74 yo Aunty can learn, so can you! 🚗

MadisonAvenue · 24/02/2017 22:43

Hat I don't ever remember seeing Stylecraft in John Lewis, but then I've only looked in the one in Birmingham.

flutterworc · 24/02/2017 22:53

Wowsers pterodore I am in awe!

My flawed attempt has wound up 7.5" wide by 6" high. Gr. Makes me think of dragon scales, which I thought might be a sort of armour for whomever ends up with it!

TheoriginalLEM · 24/02/2017 23:15

omg that blanket! i love it.

I finished my square -really happy with it Smile Bob likes it too
