Zombie and Woolly Hugs. ALL very welcome to join us, come and find out about her legacy of Candy’s Hugs.(1000 Posts)
We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.
Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.
So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X
Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together
Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.
Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..
We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page. All welcome to join us over there too.
Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.
If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.
The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...
Vibrant Riot Palette
Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.
All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.
If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits!
If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.
Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.
We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.
Thank you so much xx

Morning all - managed three and a half squares yesterday! <proud>
Can you do pics MrsH? Love seeing them on here, makes the place a fitting vibrant riot!
just signing in from sunny and warm hollibobs so I have saved this thread - thank you K&P - having a lovely time, I will use all my willpower to waft some sun and warmth over to you .
I got sidetracked, so didn't get any more crotchet done, but am going to get some done today hopefully!
Yey I found the new thread
My pack of crochet hooks arrive this morning so I now have enough to add 2 more children to my 'learn to crochet with mother' group!
Signing in, just waiting for the wool to arrive to get cracking
I may have had another yarn delivery this morning...and was also thrilled to see a couple of my squares on the under-construction Hug.
Zombie's legacy is beautiful and vibrant
Looking forward to get stuck in.
I've been through some pretty awful life stuff recently and concentrating on this has been so cathartic.
Here's looking at you, Zombie
<Waves gin bottle at fellow hookers>
Still busy on Chernobyl squares but I'll be back hooking for Candy soon.
Found you, will do more knitting tonight, today I have to make stuff to sell and then it's the annual village panto time this afternoon
Nice 3D work there, MrsH and HathCat2 is gorgeous
HathCat2 is lovely as are your squares.
<Wriggles ample arse & makes a comfy space on the new thread>
bookbook I'm glad you're having a lovely time! Soak up all that vitD & enjoy the sun. It's grey here!
RedGrape. Hmmm, would you notice an extra sitting at your knee? 😬
Banty. Sorry to hear you've had such a terrible time 💐 I'm glad you've found a little outlet for some of it.
MrsH. Love your cat photo bombing!
Costa. Hope it arrives soon!
Spiral. It's good that you're single handedly keeping so many people employed! 😁
HathCat2 is in the dog house (pun intended) for leaving DH a gift by the front door - the kind of gift your gut makes. He and his brother have been bringing us bluetits and robins all week so 💩 was a final straw for DH!
I've been in hospital so hadn't seen the update about Zombie's passing until this thread. It was always nice to bump into her on the boards and what a wonderful, colourful legacy she's leaving.
I'm sure I have some Tomato and Meadow in my wool box and can do some squares. DH will be sent to the wool shop with a list of colours to keep me busy
Checking in Off to Bristol today to see Susan Calman, hope to be back hooking tomorrow.
So happy to spot a couple of my squares in the latest hug
Signing in. Trying a bobble stripe sqyare from the 250 squares book. Mich frogging and swearing - am sure Zombie would approve! Saying a big FUCK YOU to cancer.
This truly IS a wonderful legacy and i am proud to be part of it.
My Candys wool arrived in post yesterday and the colours were so lovely that I had to start knitting last night. Did a whole 6" square, using all 3 colours in a sort of offset block/stripe thing (made it up as I went along) It is lovely if I do say so, but I now have LOADS of pesky ends to deal with. I may not repeat this pattern!
Knitting for Cernobyl and Candy, so I will do a Chrnobyl square tonight, Dd wants me to try the owl that Mrs H linked to up thread so I am going to do that.
Can't post pictures easily, when I finish the owl I'll try.
Hi there, I recently delurked after many years, but wanting to wish Zombie a peaceful onward journey gave me the push to finally do it. I've always admired the skills and selflessness of the Woolly Hugs contributors so when I read about the Candy's Hugs project I got on YouTube and have taught myself to crochet (just about!), I've done a couple of scarves for my DC to practise. I've ordered some of the wool (in Pomegranate) and I'm looking forward to joining in when it arrives.
Marking my place. Very excited to see the hugs taking shape, and spotting my squares.
I'm missing seeing Zombie around the boards. Just doesn't seem quite real.
