We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

I'd do something clashing, like tomato & boysenberry.

bookbook · 23/02/2017 18:51

I love the boysenberry - but I bet you have already got going! Grin

So crocheted, how many stitches do you do in your starting chain stitch if you are doing a row square, was thinking 33

Spindelina · 23/02/2017 20:06

My 11.5" rolling waves square is 52 stitches. But that took a lot of trial, error and frogging!

MrsHathaway · 23/02/2017 20:12

33 is average, depends on the pattern.

bookbook · 23/02/2017 20:14

Evening!
just having a quick chocolate break .- anyone want some ?
Here is todays square, tonight I am doing a 12" crotchet c2c for Chernobyl.
Sorry -I can't help with crotchet rows - not been brave enough yet to go there....

CraftyGirly90 · 23/02/2017 20:33

book I'd love to share some chocolate with you, I'm a self confessed choc-a-holic x

MadisonAvenue · 23/02/2017 20:46

Evening book I'm on the chocolate too - Reese's Cups, my favourites. Once my fingers have been de-stickied Blush I'll start another square.
I like that one that you've done!

TheHatOfDoom · 23/02/2017 21:49

My wifi went down so I couldn't check the thread. I ended up choosing boysenberry. Taking a break to watch the big bang theory then going to finish it.

bookbook · 23/02/2017 21:59

would you believe it - DH come home early from a meet up, and he has scoffed some - I was going to hide it ! Grin
Madison - its an incredibly easy pattern - and was perfect for my tension/number of stitches HERE

TheoriginalLEM · 23/02/2017 22:12

struggling with my anxiety today which is weird as ive had a lovely day out with friends and my friend loved the scarf i made for her. Working on this 12" square i think it might be a bit small so lots of plaon rows to follow, unless im brave enough to introduce some pattern? any ideas?

RedGrapeCornSnake · 23/02/2017 22:12

I'd say yes to chocolate but I've a.ready eaten a creme egg, bag of maltesers and some chocolate brownie with clotted cream. Periods are very bad for diets - must go running tomorrow! Have added 3 more squares to my pile. I really should branch out away from closed granny squares but I can do them all alone without Bella coco now so they're making me feel like a proper crocheter!

LEM - no rhyme or reason to anxiety Flowers do you have coping strategies? Have you a pic of the square , so we can help?

bookbook · 23/02/2017 22:16

Thats lovely LEM - how short is it in terms of rows?- a row of the dark /light ( sherbet?) and dark would work I think

TheHatOfDoom · 23/02/2017 22:17

Lem that looks great. If you dont want to do plain what about a mesh type edging?

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 23/02/2017 22:23

LEM, that's beautiful.

Flowers for the anxiety, I suffer myself and it's bloody awful. Usually (for me) there's no logic to it, it just IS. Anyway, crochet helps me by keeping my mind occupied and focused so I hope it does for you too.

TheoriginalLEM · 23/02/2017 22:33

Thanks guys - i have a bix of coping strategies in the cupboard although and slowly coming off them. Crochet help so much and also runninh and strangely, work. Just a blip today i think.

am going to follow same colour pattern and see how it goes, still another two rows in the pattern so it will be nearly there i think. its 7.5 inches just now

SaladDressing · 23/02/2017 22:34

LEM that's really lovely. I would be tempted just to keep adding rows in the same colour to make the centre design stand out.

diamantegal · 23/02/2017 22:51

Another one to add congratulations to LEM - that's really pretty. Also liking bookbook's square - and highly impressed that anyone can knit! I'll pass on the chocolate though - I have Wine

My contributions from the last couple of days. Not so keen on the orange one - I prefer more solid squares.

And re the earlier next thread comment. I like the idea of a general chatty thread where people share patterns (which is what this has become). I've stuck here because there seems more chat than on the other Woolly Hugs threads, but most of the squares could fit with any kind of Hug.

RedGrapeCornSnake · 23/02/2017 23:53

Ooh that's so pretty LEM

Not sure if it's of any use or interest but when I was having a particularly bad patch of anxiety during my first pregnancy I was lent a copy of a book called 'Living with it' by Bev Aisbett. It's only a little book, and written very simply (ideal for me when I couldn't focus on one thing for very long) but it helped immensely and I always recommend it to others in case it helps them too

flutterworc · 24/02/2017 00:10

LEM my anxiety has been a bit out of control of late - counselling really helps, but I have an app that I use when I'm struggling to cope that is great - it's called 'What's Up?' on iTunes and GooglePlay - I'll attach a pic of the logo too. Great for managing acute bursts of anxiety. Crochet helps too!

TheoriginalLEM · 24/02/2017 00:33
