We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Morning!

A woolly retreat sounds wonderful - I think I'm in! Will there be peace and quiet, no mobile phones, no distractions of work and oodles of wine (but not so much that my edges go wonky)? WineBrewCakeWineBrew

The edges are a little 'alternative' but here is the Dahlia square from the Jan Eaton book. I quite enjoyed making the bobbles and will have another attempt this evening.

Count me in for the Woolly Retreat!
I'm very taken with the idea of the yarn room which gives me ideas for our guest bedroom

VittysCardigan · 22/02/2017 14:00

Woolly retreat sounds wonderful. Sea views, all rooms ensuite, chef, cleaner, fully stocked bar....oh, and wool of course...

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 22/02/2017 14:12

Another one for the Woolly Retreat, please! I've only just managed to do a little bit of crochet due to real life getting in the way! Angry

RedGrapeCornSnake · 22/02/2017 14:58

Apologies for my recent absence, real life and work got in the way.
K&P asked up thread if any wool has arrived my way - not yet. I may have accidentally ordered some from the Internet to keep me going though. First squares now completed. I'm not 100% on the green one though as it has an extra treble crochet which I didn't notice before I finished it and is now driving me bonkers!

A woolly retreat sounds good. I have done 4 Candy squares and 4 for the home blanket. I am practicing on the home blanket squares. I did a bobbly one which proved 2 things 1) bobbles are easy to crochet and 2) I can't count. I mananged to lose a stitch at the end of one of the rows and didn't notice for a couple of rows. In the end I cheated and worked a second stitch into an end stitch and carried on as I couldn't face frogging. I figured that when I join the squares together there will be enough stretch to make up for the missing stitch in those rows and only I will know (oh and all of you and anyone else on the internet reading this Wink).
I will start on another Candy square tonight as I've just finished a granny striped one for the home blanket.

AmethystRaven · 22/02/2017 15:15

I picture the Woolly Retreat as a log cabin with a real fire, lots of blankets (obviously), comfy chairs, cushions and a well stocked bar!

I need to go and get some new needles tomorrow as my bamboo ones are splitting and catching the wool. I have some 4mm metal ones but I just can't get on with metal needles - too heavy and slippery. Might peruse the wool while I'm there too, be silly not to.

Stuff this, it's half term here and the DC are already entertained: I'm starting a Retreat Pinterest board.

I'm in for a woolly retreat! Sounds like heaven

SpiralArchitect · 22/02/2017 16:09

A Woolly Retreat sounds fab...

I'm sure there's been something in the air lately - so many of us with depression seem to have hit a bump in the road. Flowers to everyone.

I have kicked myself up the backside and finally done the C2C tutorial. Very impressed with how quickly it hooks up.

HappyAxolotyl · 22/02/2017 16:48

So many beautiful squares! I love looking at them.

LEM and Spiral, I am impressed with your c2c squares; I have never tried that. I looked at the tutorial once but it seemed a bit tricky in places. I will put it on my enormous to do list!

Woolly Retreat? Yes please, count me in. Sounds blissful.

I have been joining squares on my first ever blanket, but have also managed a few Hugs for Candy.

I Pinned whilst making the DC their tea, so there's a lot of, um, catering on it.

This is the UK summer version, not the alpine winter version some of you were after.

Marcipex · 22/02/2017 17:34

HappyAx, your squares are exquisite. I very much hope no one puts them next to any of mine.

Marcipex · 22/02/2017 17:36

Can I join the Woolly retreat?
And are there hot springs?

WitchDancer · 22/02/2017 17:42

Oh a Wooly retreat sounds heavenly. Will we have a massage person on tap to ease any muscles that have ceased to work through sitting in one position for too long?

MadisonAvenue · 22/02/2017 17:53

Mrs H! It looks fabulous!!

VittysCardigan · 22/02/2017 18:02

MrsH - that looks just right to me - blissful Smile

VittysCardigan · 22/02/2017 18:03
