We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Hi just checking in.

I've said I'll do a whole blanket for the Chernobyl project so my Candy squares are on the back burner for now but I'm still lurking.

I'm definitely in for the Woolly Retreat if there's space Grin I can bring my cat, he's usually very good around wool and doesn't try to join in. He uses my peskie cut offs to express his woolly creativity. Speaking of which, can we have a dedicated peskie team? Where we can pass our creations so we don't have to deal with them ourselves?

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 23/02/2017 10:00

Well, thank you very much, MrsH - I am holding you personally responsible for my wasting yet more time in a never-ending loop of Pinterest, then Ravelry, then Pinterest again...😂

Oh, and now I seem to have somehow stumbled across something called 'Sophie's Universe' which of course I am now going to HAVE to try...

I am now on first-name terms with both the Wool Warehouse and my DPD driver! Blush

Please, someone, keep me away from Pinterest!!!!!!!!

Woolly Retreat looks fab, btw and exactly what I had pictured!

MadisonAvenue · 23/02/2017 10:03

I'm going to have to bring my dog, my husband always comments that he's never more than 2ft away from me. And he's used to guinea pigs as we used to have three who lived in our kitchen for the first two years of his life.

@KnottyAndPistey Us little Chatter Boxes seem to have nearly filled up the thread Blush. I hope we aren't making it too frustrating for you to keep up with the thread. If we are I can start up a chatter box thread if you like, but it's nice to have it mixed in with the squares.

SaladDressing · 23/02/2017 11:03

SevenTillFour - I think I need to do that, the trouble is that it just inspires me to buy even more colours when I haven't got close to getting through the last delivery. It might be a job for this evening whilst watching the Pottery Showdown Smile.

I'm a little worried about your 'naked peg' though, he needs a face or clothes or something!?!?

MrsHathaway · 23/02/2017 11:11

Maybe we should have a general WH chat where we can share all the squares we're doing as we go along - surely a pattern that's good for Candy is good for other projects too.

SpiralArchitect · 23/02/2017 11:17

MrsH Perhaps we should revive the ancient Woolly Hugs Woolpack thread for general chat, Gin and Wine (or start a new one) Grin

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 23/02/2017 11:22

I agree, MrsH, I have got several patterns for Chernobyl that I'm intending to use for Candy's Hugs when I'm done.

Be lovely to be able to carry on the crochet/knitting/crafting chit chat and see pictures of everyone's pets.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 23/02/2017 11:37

I like keeping Zombie's thread active, so I like us chatting here. I just don't want to annoy K&P 🤔

Plus keeping it in Active Threads means people will see the original post by K&P and hopefully new people will join us all the time, wherascifvits just a chat thread we will lose that.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 23/02/2017 13:05

I CAN CROCHET!

That is all

FurryLittleTwerp · 23/02/2017 13:06

Grin Five !

I can crochet in rows better than I can in rounds, I've realised - never tried rows before last night. I'll put up a picture later...

Weirdly I crochet tight in rounds but loose in rows - what's that all about?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 23/02/2017 13:41

Only rows at the moment, I did have a go at a round but need to practice some more, but it just clicked and I really did need to go and have a lesson and spend some more money, watch out world here I come

Marcipex · 23/02/2017 14:02

Beautiful dog Madison. Of course bring him everyone will love him.

Marcipex · 23/02/2017 14:03

FiveGoMad, well done you.

CraftyGirly90 · 23/02/2017 14:35

Is it just me or do all or most of us have a very cute, lovable, adorable animal helper of some description? X

flutterworc · 23/02/2017 15:18

I have a 4yo - does that count CraftyGirl?

CraftyGirly90 · 23/02/2017 15:34

Of course they do flutter x

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 23/02/2017 16:06

Five - yay!!! So glad you had fun, was there cake involved too?

I think maybe we should start a Crochet and Knitters Anonymous....!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 23/02/2017 16:08

Me too -flutter, except they are nearly 2 and 9 months. To be fair, they are definitely more of a hindrance than a help, but they do love the yarn!

I have older children too, but they know better than to mess with Mum's crochet - although DD1 is using the wool to knit some squares for Candy's Hugs.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 23/02/2017 16:11

Crafty, I can't wait for when I can have a foggy helper too - we're going to get a Labrador, but not until the babies have grown up quite a bit!

Sorry - I realise I've added three posts to this thread when I could've combined it into one. I just read everything more carefully before I reply!

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 23/02/2017 16:26

Well done Five it's great when it finally clicks isn't it Smile

I left the house briefly this afternoon and of course missed my Wool Warehouse delivery by THREE MINUTES! Now I have to wait until I can get to the sorting office tomorrow to pick it up, what an embuggerance!

Mummylin · 23/02/2017 16:32

Have now finished a second lot and will post them off tomorrow. They aren't perfect but hopefully will be useable !

Zombie and Woolly Hugs. ALL very welcome to join us, come and find out about her legacy of Candy’s Hugs.
PeaceOfWildThings · 23/02/2017 16:35

Mummylin They look wonderful! :)

WitchDancer · 23/02/2017 17:21

You bunch of boozers! They are definitely squeaking and are therefore not cans of Guinness I have inadvertently caged! Confused

TheHatOfDoom · 23/02/2017 18:03

Anyone want to decide what granny square I'm working on at stitch and bitch tonight? Leaving in 30 minutes.

I have claret, tomato, magenta and boysenberry left to work with. Single or two colour.
