We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a sad shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Wine

Anyone seeing this project for the first time, wondering about joining in, make this the day you do! This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

Our previous threads are the first one here and the second one here..

We are keeping a photo album on our Facebook page.]] All welcome to join us over there too. Thanks

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection date is March 11th, then April 22nd. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

Thank you so much xx

Started trying interlocking crochet. What have I doneConfusedSad

Spindelina · 04/02/2017 15:04

Thanks for the new thread.

I'm about 1/8 of the way though my next piece. I've taught myself a bit of crochet too - it's a bit more portable.

PicardsCombOver · 04/02/2017 15:07

Found you all Grin
Spindelina what is that?!? Why are there so many dangly things? Is it crochet!?! Shock
Hello to everyone and anyone

Spindelina · 04/02/2017 15:15

Hello to you Picards. It's lace - the dangly things are the bobbins. My first square had 84 of them! This has got fewer - I'm doing a square with a hole in the middle, and I'm going to back it with a knitted square.

PicardsCombOver · 04/02/2017 15:38

Spindelina it looks fantastic but so so.delicate! I can't imagine the time, patience and skill it requires. Well done indeed Brew

Spindelina · 04/02/2017 15:42

I figure if people just wanted a blanket, they could go to the shop! This whole thing is about the love, time and effort put in to handcrafting.

It keeps me occupied (am pg, so not a lot of energy going spare) and I love the pillow and spangled bobbins - they are in and of themselves a nice thing to have on my table.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 04/02/2017 15:43

Wow Spindelina that looks amazing!

I have a daft newbie question that I need to ask, how exactly 6 inches do they need to be? I've got one at 5 1/2 ins and another one closer to 6 1/2 ins.

Thanks to Salad for that Bella Coco link yesterday Smile I really enjoyed having a go at that square last night.

Marcipex · 04/02/2017 15:46

Hello everyone Brew Cake
I love this thread but I must do my Cherobyl squares.

Marcipex · 04/02/2017 15:47

Chernobyl
I can spell it really.

SpiralArchitect · 04/02/2017 15:56

Chipping. I am doing my bit for the British yarn store industry Grin

DS pointedly looked at the new yarn, then at my stash, did the Hmm face and uttered the words that send every self-respecting knitter or hooker into a rage - "Do you really need more wool?" Shock

LollipopViolet · 04/02/2017 15:59

Oh I wish I had the co ordination and eyesight to crochet or knit - only crafty thing I can do is make patchwork blankets from fabric squares :( I will however, donate some funds when money is a little less tight, for this wonderful cause.

Bearfrills · 04/02/2017 15:59

Spiral, one phrase alongside an eye roll - "I've had this wool for ages...."

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 04/02/2017 16:29

I've finished my very first square!!! Ends sewn in and everything !

Now I'm off to try and learn how to crochet a flower to sew in the middle...

Banderchang · 04/02/2017 16:40

My yarn and needles arrived, and I've done three knitted squares so far. Thanks to MrsH for the pattern ideas for newbies on the previous thread.

Tried crochet, but ended up with a sphere rather than a square. No idea how, but think I will stick with knitting!

How do I find the address to post to, please? I'm getting into my stride now, so should have quite a few done by the March deadline.

VintageTeacup · 04/02/2017 16:40

Would love to knit some squares, I'm afraid I'm quite a beginner though so they might be a bit plain.

PicardsCombOver · 04/02/2017 16:57

Hi Raptor Grin
I can't say for sure but I believe that K+P prefer the squares slightly under 6'' rather than slightly over, the reason being that you can force a square to be bigger but you can't really make it shrink Grin I'm sure a regular will come and correct me asap x I look forward to seeing pics soon hint hint

PicardsCombOver · 04/02/2017 16:59

Teacup the organisers are perectly lovely and always insist that it doesn't matter what the squares look like, it's the love in each stitch x

MrsSippy · 04/02/2017 17:19

I've never joined these threads before, but I was always thrilled to see the fabulous Zombie on MN, she will be missed! Anyway, I can crochet, I have ordered the wool, so as soon as it arrives I'll get going on some pretty squares (love the Vibrant Riot colour palette by the way) but in the meanwhile I'll pour myself a glass and raise a toast to one and all 🍷

Bearfrills · 04/02/2017 17:26

Two squares done, just got the ends to weave in. I'll get some more done over this week Smile

FiveGoMadInDorset · 04/02/2017 17:36

I have sussed out my problem with crocheting, I can't find a comfortable way to hold the wool in my left hand

VintageTeacup · 04/02/2017 17:40

Thanks Picards, just ordered some wool so will make a start when it arrives.

bookbook · 04/02/2017 17:46

5GMiD - I hold the wool in my right hand, as if I am knitting Blush - its the only way I have been able to crotchet, but it works well for me :)

UnbornMortificado · 04/02/2017 17:47

Place marking, I'm talentless as ever but will send a new donation over with it been a new month.

We had chuggers at the door awhile back. I was out but DH told them all about Candy's Hugs and why it was a better, more deserving charity.

ElornaElephant · 04/02/2017 17:52

I've never crocheted in my life before, but I'm desperate to have a go for such a lovely cause. Can anybody tell me if it matters which crochet hooks I buy? Amazon seems to have tons and I'm baffled.
