the discussion needs broadening and more viewpoints and protected characteristics being represented in it if it must be a school issue

Indeed. Gender reassignment is a protected characteristic.

Hercisback · 15/04/2023 17:09

No one is doing this. You are reading into things and getting it wrong.

These generalisations are from one page of this thread:

I think teachers have lost their way.

So why have so many teachers decided it’s ok to change the name of children who declare a belief in gender identity?

Teachers are going to have to accept responsibility for their part in this. Schools have been worse than the internet.

Floisme · 15/04/2023 17:09

Like I said, interesting that there's no coherent position here.
You're using the word 'coherent' but from your posts, it seems more that you're expressing surprise that there isn't 100% agreement about how to tackle it? If that's so then I'm not sure why that should come as such as surprise to you. There's regular disagreement on here - we don't even agree on how we're going to vote.

swallowedAfly · 15/04/2023 17:10

Fgs do you think teachers get a say in this? Do you know what would happen to a teacher if they ignored an order to use a pronoun and name?

The most we can do is avoid it, not actively call them by their real name and pronouns.

Yep. Trans identity isn’t but has been being treated as if it is from the very top. Hopefully the clarification on the Equality Act that sex means biological natal sex not identity will make everyone’s lives easier in terms of policy and approach instead of feeling like they’re walking a tightrope over the Grand Canyon

There doesn't seem to be any particular agreement in how to tackle it, let alone near 100%. Given the years of discussion on here, and the ever imminent publication of the schools guidance, I kind of expected a bit more thought to have gone into the details of what people want to see in it.

Hercisback · 15/04/2023 17:17

It has to be a comprehensive change and everyone- all staff, pupils and parents, need to know it has happened, at the same time.

So let's wait for the DfE and accept a nationwide approach.

swallowedAfly · 15/04/2023 17:18

I suspect clarification to the equality act has to get through first in order to be able to write solid clear legal guidance to institutions that is enforceable.

That may be why they’re focusing on this now. Much as I’m loathe to attribute strategy to politicians.

No but people in their rushing to point out that sex is a protected characteristic seem to miss that gender reassignment is also a protected characteristic.

Gender reassignment is pretty nebulously defined. It also doesn't appear to exclude children.

Which would cause issues for schools refusing to use preferred names that they considered 'trans'.

swallowedAfly · 15/04/2023 17:22

I think we’re getting there 🙏. I think the escalating violence and madness of tras is speeding things up and making the issues more mainstream and therefore more pressing. The Scotland debacle too.

we definitely don’t need to be attacking each other now.

MarshaBradyo · 15/04/2023 17:22

People don’t need to use this board for advice at work it’s a discussion on politics and what they are doing

The division between Labour and Cons is clear

swallowedAfly · 15/04/2023 17:23

You sound like a party political broadcast Marsha. They all got captured.

As deleted

I stand by it. People have lost their way with this

Labour supporters especially.

swallowedAfly · 15/04/2023 17:30

I’m not a labour supporter btw.

MarshaBradyo · 15/04/2023 17:31

Yeh of course not 🤷‍♂️

swallowedAfly · 15/04/2023 17:37

Eh? I don’t understand how you jumped to that conclusion or cast doubt when I correct it. Do you mean that I’m lying?
