On 6 August 2026, BBC Three Counties local radio station, which covers Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, ran a half hour current affairs chat on the Jonathan Vernon-Smith Show. The midday item was posed as a question: “Do you think it’s right to tell transgender people which toilet to use?”

The first contributor put on air to talk about that question were Robin Moira White, a male barrister who claims to be a woman. Robin advocates for men to be able to use women’s toilets and does so himself. The next guest was Nora Padilla, a full-time policy officer at the campaign group TransActual, which also advocates for men to be able to use women’s toilets. Then we heard from “Michelle” from Watford. Like Robin, Michelle is a man who claims to be a woman and – surprise surprise – advocates for male use of female facilities....

And the story goes on. And gets more and more damning for the BBC. The useless, ridiculously activist, taxpayer-supported BBC... Still.

Pointing to a horrific crime that happened in a park does not prove that a park and an isolated, unlit carpark carry the exact same risk profile.

So how come men don’t modify their behaviour around women when it comes to murdering, raping and assaulting them? So what would you say to a woman in this mixed sex space who gets raped by a man who is perfectly allowed to be there? “It’s ok love, you were doing the Lords work cos we let men in there so other men could feel safe? Thanks for taking one for the team”? Why do you think we have single sex toilets to begin with? Why did women campaign so hard for them? Why are Oxfam actively campaigning to have single sex toilets in India, Nepal and Pakistan? Are Oxfam wrong to do that? If so. Why?

Oh there is a real person yes. But they didn't write the reply, they just prompted the AI. There's no genuine apology there. No human had to consider whether and how they wanted to apologise, nor how much regret to express.

I was specifically answering your question around why a trans woman could be unsafe in a single sex space and safe in a mixed sex space. I wasn’t even arguing for universal mixed sex spaces like the original commenter. I was just making the point that environment and people can change behaviour. Do I think mixed sex spaces are safety than single sex spaces for women? No. Do I think a mixed sex space is safer for trans women? Yes. Do I think we should force mixed sex spaces everywhere? No.

Obviously not all men will be put off from committing a crime, but a busy space is still going to put most people off. If it didn’t we wouldn’t have street lighting and CCTV everywhere

It wouldn't be a problem for me - it would be for some of the more vocal 'GC' voices who have turned it into a money-making venture. (I don't actually believe they are GC in actual fact - I think they think they've found a grift to earn an easy crust from a captive audience. I think had it been financially necessary 15 years ago they'd be fully paid-up members of the no debate society.

So you are admitting mixed sex spaces will not always be safe? So why are you advocating for them? Why do you want to put women in danger? Why do you think the toilets will always be busy?

It's so, so frustrating because in practice the question is completely irrelevant.

Sex can be objectively quantified, but identity can't, so the only question worth asking is whether toilets should be single sex or mixed sex. If you have decided that they should be mixed sex, you then need to ask how that impacts safety, for all the reasons detailed at length on this board by keeptoiletssafe.

You’re the one who said you didn’t think some GC people were pretending to be GC didn’t you? I suppose that’s nothing to with the fact they’d make mincemeat out of any TRA pitted against them. Don't you find it odd that Stonewall, Mermaids, GLP, Pride et al have raised many millions to support trans people yet haven't funded any additional unisex provisions? Don't you find it odd that their focus has all been on the much less practical, less popular and frankly less morally justifiable tactic of demanding the use of women's spaces?

So if men can’t be trusted to behave well in hospital wards and prisons, why are you expecting them to behave better in toilets? I mean, TIM will obviously have to use male wards and prisons now, so surely they’d be unsafe there? So by your logic, we should make prisons and psych wards mixed sex as well.

And of course the eternal question - given that lots of men face risks from other men in various ways, why is it only the ones who claim to be women that anyone is suggesting have to get a pass to hide in the ladies bogs? Are the others not as important or something?

So if you believe mixed sex toilets and spaces are unsafe for women, why do you think we should implement them? Just to protect TIM. In that case, no. Male on male violence is nothing to do with women. If some men feel unsafe in male spaces, that’s on men to solve.
