On 6 August 2026, BBC Three Counties local radio station, which covers Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, ran a half hour current affairs chat on the Jonathan Vernon-Smith Show. The midday item was posed as a question: “Do you think it’s right to tell transgender people which toilet to use?”

The first contributor put on air to talk about that question were Robin Moira White, a male barrister who claims to be a woman. Robin advocates for men to be able to use women’s toilets and does so himself. The next guest was Nora Padilla, a full-time policy officer at the campaign group TransActual, which also advocates for men to be able to use women’s toilets. Then we heard from “Michelle” from Watford. Like Robin, Michelle is a man who claims to be a woman and – surprise surprise – advocates for male use of female facilities....

And the story goes on. And gets more and more damning for the BBC. The useless, ridiculously activist, taxpayer-supported BBC... Still.

Wow. Way to totally fail to understand what it is to be a woman in a sexist culture that uses exactly that type of manipulative shite to keep us down!

In practice, it's not that simple.

People require more privacy in mixed sex toilets so you need fully enclosed cubicles which require more space.

If you can find more space, you still have the problem that a fully enclosed publicly accessible lockable room creates opportunity for crime and makes it difficult to help somebody in distress.

It doesn’t matter. Women are saying no. They don’t even need a reason. No is a compete sentence. TIM can use the men’s there. They’ll be perfectly safe. Even the ones who are convinced they “pass”.

This was certainly an eye opening experience. You say you want someone to explain the argument, but then respond with personal attacks of wilful misinterpretation or inane circular logic. I enjoy a good debate, but this is like wrestling with a pig. We both get dirty, but you enjoy it.

You still haven’t come up with a benefit to women to giving up their single sex spaces. You still haven’t explained how allowing men in will make women safer. All you seem concerned about is how TIM feel and what they want. It’s almost like women are just not worthy in your opinion to their own rights, wants and needs.

Does it not occur to you that there are reasons why they need single sex spaces in some circumstances? That this is why there are exemptions in the Equality Act that specifically allow this?

Of course! But no more than any other group. And certainly I don't as a woman feel any particular obligation to support trans women in particular over anyone else. I don't think trans women have some sort of special claim or moral right to female protections, rights or resources simply because they choose to use the word "woman" to describe themselves, or think trans women are objectively any closer to female people than other male people are.
