The small community of Millport is to have an LGBT+ pride. Thoughts?

Millport is on Cumbrae (don't confuse with Cumbria)- a small island on the West of Scotland coast, population not much over 1,000 with a lot of elderly. It's the only town on the island so most people generally just say Millport. As one of the more Southern islands and its small size it is popular for tourists and cycling.

So they are going to have their first ever pride on Sep 12th. Pride events usually happen in cities so it's unusual for one to take place in a small island with a lot of elderly and Christian residents. Some on social media are complaining the "ideology is being pushed on small island communities" whilst others are saying Ayrshire is a decade behind Glasgow in terms of LGBT acceptance with men or boys being targeted even for discreetly holding hands.

I've just seen a post on FB about it.
I don't buy thst gay people are targeted in Largs ffs, which is what I read, and Largs isn't Millport anyway.

Good on them. Elderly people can be LGBTQ +as well. If not most will enjoy it im sure. Do you live there ?

If 1/10 of us are gay, then the community has at least 100 people who may wish to parade, especially the older generations who were actually discriminated against and know why pride exists.

I do buy it. Some Ayrshire communities can be rough/"hard" (a Council estate in Ayrshire is where "The Scheme" was filmed), the population is aging as mentioned and many people are actual practicing Christian, and there are no cities in Ayrshire so it's always been lacking in terms of LGBT events/parades/gay bars etc.

I wonder if the prospective attendees will be given information about the significant and important difference between being LGB and T+.

If Pride has yet to reach this island, it would be a perfect opportunity to do so.

By your description, it sounds like a grassroots event spearheaded by passionate locals. Good on them.

I've never quite understood why these "events" always have to take place on public roads. Why not hire a field? Those that want to go can go, those who don't can continue to use these public roads as they're meant to be used.

Wonder if they'll hire bikes and cycle round in their rainbows? 😂

Loads of pride parades around the west coast. There was one on Mull a few weeks ago, Oban has one also on the 12th (I think) which is fronted, of course, by a drag queen and coincides with the now annual Lesbian weekend which is, also of course, inclusive of men who claim to be women and lesbians.

Well the elderly can also be LGBTQ, and I know a lot of Christians who also are

Plus anyone can support Pride - there must be some desire for it to be happening

Your previous posts suggests that you are very supportive of Trans Ideology so why not put that in your OP?

Where is your figure from? The figure in the E&W 2021 census was around 5% IIRC.

If people don't like it, just don't go & completely ignore it. It'll probably be the first and last. A small town near me cancelled this summer's Pride shenanigans, announcing it will be bigger & better next year!!! Hurray!!! In fact, it was poorly attended (theres a big, brash Pride in a city nearby) and I'll wager it's just disappeared after the one event.

It'll be the same on the island, don't worry.

I don't see the issue. It's basically only one street anyway, and I don't see why it shouldn't have a pride event if that's what someone wants to arrange.

This is the sort of thought that makes small places unattractive. So you think it's ok to be LGBT or any other minority so long as you live in a city? The event is likely to bring visitors and income to the islands.

I'm none of these things and have no time for the trans ideology but I find this outlook really mean.

I've never been there at the right time to observe it, but having spent a great deal of time on Arran over the last quarter of a century I'd be amazed if everybody participating was resident there. It's a small place with a lot of elderly people but also a lot of slightly alternative types, a huge number of visitors and a fair number of high profile businesses run by gay men. In many ways it's not surprising that this has been set up. I see they've lent their equipment to the Millport Pride and encouraged their followers to go. I hope everybody has a lovely day.

(I would feel differently if it was the kind of Pride event that had some of the unsavoury fetishes on display and inappropriate things happening/celebrated in front of children, but from the few pictures I've seen that hasn't been the case on Arran.)

I was interested in what Mumsnet would think of a small, rural, Christian community having an LGBT pride event so asked neutrally without saying too much of my own views.
