The small community of Millport is to have an LGBT+ pride. Thoughts?

Millport is on Cumbrae (don't confuse with Cumbria)- a small island on the West of Scotland coast, population not much over 1,000 with a lot of elderly. It's the only town on the island so most people generally just say Millport. As one of the more Southern islands and its small size it is popular for tourists and cycling.

So they are going to have their first ever pride on Sep 12th. Pride events usually happen in cities so it's unusual for one to take place in a small island with a lot of elderly and Christian residents. Some on social media are complaining the "ideology is being pushed on small island communities" whilst others are saying Ayrshire is a decade behind Glasgow in terms of LGBT acceptance with men or boys being targeted even for discreetly holding hands.

True. The Kingston one was a very mild affair by what I saw on social media. Mostly teenage girls and mums with little kids.

The kids all go to school in age mainland ffs, and Largs is a perfectly ordinary town, similar to the one I live in, in the area.

We stayed in Milport earlier this year - it was lovely. There’s a cathedral and a few churches on Cumbrae, tiny though it is.

I'm on Millport, and with 20+ years connection to the island. Grew up just over the water from the island. I know the area and the people.

I can tell you this much. The native islanders - most of them families who've been here for generations, and the elderly west of Scotlanders who have retired here, most of whom have been desperate their whole working lives to get to retire here, and the most frequent island visitors - don't want this event.

But they don't want to have to deal with the people behind the event.

The people behind this are not from the island. They are seen as an annoying, hyper woke pestilence, doing the usual meddling and imposing that incomers do, and best ignored.
No-one wants anything to do with them, except the few other incomers.

The island businesses will take their money tomorrow, and tolerate them. But aside from the one pub known locally to be gay friendly, where the flags would be expected - on this night before the event, there are no flags on the streets of the town, and only a few windows with small A5 size posters.

If there are any numbers tomorrow, the majority will have been boated in from elsewhere. They will not be islanders.

On the island's facebook, eveidently controlled by the alphabet mafia, anyone questioning why this event is now suddently "needed" on this island, and anyone criricising the T+ alphabet soup, has been banned and their comments and links to information have been removed.

😅The vast majority of the elderly on Millport are there because they speciafically choose to be there.

The sudden desire for a pride event is certainly not coming from the Millport elderly!

Arran natives dind't want this any more than Millport does.

These are incomers imposing their will as they always do. Nobody who's an actual islander wants to engage with them.

It's nothing like grass roots, and it's not an event run by the community of Millport.

An LGB only pride wouldn't be a problem.

But we all know what the organisers of this event is pushing, and it's not LGB pride.The islanders don't know the half of it, and why would they - the island is a place of sanity away from the madness and evils and shit in the world and that's why it's been so beloved by Glaswegians and Clyde coasters and west of Scotland folk for so many generations. Peace and respite.

The Oban Pride this year had someone called Sister Alaska of the Haus of Nunsense leading a "moment of noise", something about to show the right wing fascists to show that they are still here. I see if I find the Oban Times report on it somewhere.
I have honestly no idea how this is helping some local gay kid.

This is much how I hear it went down on Bute, and Oban.

Glasgow marchers bussed in. In fact the Waverly even brought a load.

I know someone who travelled up to Oban. A straight person with a lanyard.

Locals just stayed clear apart from the small handful of those involved.

It's manufactured consent, I suppose. Gives the appearance of nationwide movement by reusing the same busload of people with a bunch of polyester flags and whistles.

12 to 25 is an odd age range. What 25 year old wants to hang out with 12 year olds?

There was very little on the local FB sites. In previous years several local organisations and businesses got involved and posted about it on their social media. I saw nothing this year. There is one shop that had rainbow bunting up that I saw, I might have missed some.

Anyone I've spoken to locally has just done a wee eye roll.

Ignore it and it goes away, is the general feeling I get.

It's a nice idea.

And these remote Pride marches are nothing like the big city ones. There will be mostly a bunch of rainbow flags, well meaning people, trade unions and some corporate teams, and one or two drag queens and men dressed as women. Activists on best behaviour, no antagonism. It's the lovebombing aspect of the movement. The kind of march the politicians used to go on. No furries. No arses hanging out.

You seem very interested in the sexuality of children. Is this a bug or a feature?
