The small community of Millport is to have an LGBT+ pride. Thoughts?

Millport is on Cumbrae (don't confuse with Cumbria)- a small island on the West of Scotland coast, population not much over 1,000 with a lot of elderly. It's the only town on the island so most people generally just say Millport. As one of the more Southern islands and its small size it is popular for tourists and cycling.

So they are going to have their first ever pride on Sep 12th. Pride events usually happen in cities so it's unusual for one to take place in a small island with a lot of elderly and Christian residents. Some on social media are complaining the "ideology is being pushed on small island communities" whilst others are saying Ayrshire is a decade behind Glasgow in terms of LGBT acceptance with men or boys being targeted even for discreetly holding hands.

How did it go then @Womensacuriousarticle ? Was it celebrating LGB or was it just about T+ and did the locals pretty much ignore it? I have distant relatives on millport plus lots of closer family connections, I don't imagine they'd have been pleased with men parading about in chains, leather and puppy masks (like at Glasgow pride). If it was genuinely to celebrate same sex relationships as just like everyone else, then fair dos. It sounded from your previous posts though that it wasn't going to be...

I saw a video of the parade.

There weren't any "puppy masks" or "men in chains" (sorry to disappoint) but there looked like a lot of happy locals waving pride flags- including the progress flag with the chevrons and the trans flag.

I saw one too, they all looked a bit bored.

When did a 12 year old become a young adult?

Having seen photos and video on local Facebook groups this pretty much sums it up. Didn’t spot any of the nasty fetish/furry folks, just lots of rainbows and an EIS banner. A couple of blokes in wigs. Pride like this is fine, if only it had stayed that way everywhere and didn’t now represent the issues we have seen in recent years more than it’s original intention which means many of us cannot support.

Furries were there, So were walking sticks, gigantic men in frocks, rainbow dressed toddlers and young kids, grown men carrying small dogs like babies - and those carrying the front banner were all young teenagers. I couild add more of what I saw but it wouldn't get past the censor.

The amount of oblivious women supporting this is really depressing.

Any idea how many had travelled to Millport specifically, and how many were locals?

As Ricky Gervais said, you don't hear a lot of gay 16 year olds calling for a lowering of the age of consetn. You only hear it from a certain kind of grown man...

Closely guarded official secret by the organisers I would imagine, but it was clear the vast majority were not locals.

Disappointed to hear this - I’m no fan of the TQIA+ movement and clearly the photos shared online are selective. I did see a photo of a preteen with a banner earlier that saddened me - something about “being straight WAS the phase” - why this need to define and parade any sexuality at such a young age?

for what it’s worth there has been very little promotion of this locally that I’ve seen. I’ve only seen it mentioned on Facebook and mumsnet.

It's been all over the local paper's fb pages for weeks and weeks. The organisers have been really rabid in their nonstop promotion of it. But every time anyone points out who and what underlies and drives Pride now on the newspaper's fb page, comments get closed or their specific comment is removed d.

A friend of mine has been banned from umpteen threads about it on the local fb pages. Provided evidence of wrongdoing and wronguns within the movement, asked them to prove her wrong about anything she was saying. Got pelters and insults from every side... and then, of course, when she challenged them to prove her wrong, she got banned. They can not tolerate truth.

She's been inudated with messages from locals supporting and thanking her. They now know a lot more than they did previously, they've had a lot of suspsicions confirmed and they're not happy.

The vast majority weren't local.
The organisers had got made specific Millport pride flags given out to everyone, and of course the stolen and adulterated flags that represent nothing at all to do with adult same sex attraction were there in great numbers.

I’m not gay…. But if I was I would go to/ support a pride event, regardless of location or where I live. Ditto for many friends of mine who are gay.
Given that some pride events no longer happen it’s odd to me to see new locations hosting them.

Out of interest @Womensacuriousarticle , are there other photos of the less savoury elements of the parade you mentioned seeing on the day, that are up on the Facebook page? I just think if there's no proof then we unfortunately can't point out the issues and fight for safeguarding as it will be a case of he says she says. For what it's worth I think a pride parade to celebrate gay, lesbian and bisexual men and women is great - but furries and overly sexual fetish/leather gear shouldn't be displayed in front of children during the day. I mean, is leather/fetish sexual activity really something to represent the lesbian, gay community?

My lesbian and gay friends aren't really into that at all, they are just married with their kids getting on with their lives. All the fetish/BDSM folks (and believe me, they like to talk about it, that's why I know) have largely been heterosexual and male. Tbh I'd find it quite insulting seeing these blokes there as if they are part of the parade as it implies that this sort of paraphilic sexual preference is what the gay community is only about. Sorry, I'm probably not articulating myself well. Just my head trying to make sense of it all. Anyway, that sort of stuff shouldn't be paraded in front of kids.

Some big Pride events were cancelled and so nearby towns saw an opportunity. My town had one forvthe first time. Itcwas a pretty tame affair from what O saw - mostly teenage girls in rainbow colours.

I don’t see why I should even have a view on it. If they want to hold a pride event there why would I have an issue with it. I don’t see how it’s forced on anybody.

Maybe she's missed the point of what pride is about? It's not an invitation for homophobes like that guy who got shot last year or gender criticals to have a "prove me wrong" debate about how sinful homosexuality is or whatever.
