Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

Backwardsbinn · Yesterday 20:33

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

In itself no, but when you have a megaphone pointed at 14million people everything you say has a disproportionate impact. Honestly if eugenics isn’t a dealbreaker for her what is?

What the fuck are you talking about?

Summerlovingtheraspberries · Today 07:52

She speaks the truth.
Same as Ricky Gervais but Ricky is male which means they let him off the hook.

6ate9 · Today 07:54

JKR speaks the truth which we ALL know. It doesn’t matter how many hormones or surgeries someone has, or what clothes they wear, Men and women CANNOT change sex!!

OP: Why?

Answers: Because...

OP et al: You're wrong (on repeat).

WHY ask a question when the only thing you want to do is shoot down those who disagree? Unless it was purely rhetorical, for JKR supporters?

Because we haven’t seen any proof of her “transphobia” other than “Because she says things we don’t like and she isn’t always kind”.

In fact, I think JKR herself offered £1m to anyone who proved she was transphobic. AFAIK the money is still unclaimed.

Clusterfuckular · Today 07:54

Her entire Twitter account is transphobia.

All of it. Calling trans women fetishists, claiming trans guys are all autistic mentally ill survivors (!!), taking the piss out of individual trans and nb people, pushing the 'trans away the gay' lie...only someone who is themselves transphobic refuses to see it.

She's also made some absolutely hateful, repulsive comments about asexual people.

Dismissing her behaviour as 'standing up for women' is deeply disingenuous. That doesn't explain why she reposted a thoughtful article about how a nb parent defined themself with nasty, disparaging comments, to give just one example.

All from a woman who employed a domestic abuser, refused to fire him, defended her decision and ignored the DV groups who asked her to reconsider.

Her attitude towards trans people is extremely consequential when they are suffering very real violence - particularly in schools.

She has reposted Islamophobic content, replied approvingly to obvious fascists and denied that trans people were killed during the Holocaust. She hasn't distanced herself from KJK or any other Islamophobic, racist anti-trans people.

She even defended that hateful, racist danger Linehan.

I'm aware asking 'what JKR has said that's so transphobic' is rarely done sincerely, but just in case: read her own words. Read, if you can stomach it, what she and her cronies (inc that worrying bloke who runs a trans woman parody account) say about trans women's bodies.

Read what she said about Imane Khelif, a young Muslim woman in whose country it's illegal to be trans. Look at how she publicly treated her, based upon little more than rumours and Khelif's appearance.

Khelif is a massive inspiration and fantastic female role-model for young girls in Algeria. They love her for that.

JKR's targeting of a brown Muslim woman has been noted by people normally uninterested in her anti-trans comments. She isn't a doctor, or on the Olympic Committee. It's horrific what she's put that young woman (who's lost plenty of matches to other cis women btw) and others through.

The evidence is all there. Bigots don't get to say they aren't bigots, that's for their targets to name.

Thank you, genuinely and sincerely, for partaking in discussion.

Its very helpful to have it all laid out so we can see the TRA arguments.

I also wholeheartedly support this:

'...read her own words. Read, if you can stomach it'

We are, mate. We are. 😊

Imane Khelif is a man. Not sure what that fact has to do with proving JKR is anything.

Clusterfuckular · Today 08:05

TRAs (and many others) have turned JKR into a hate figure. She stands as a cipher for the issue. At this point, it probably hardly matters what she says, has said about any of it. Her name is used as a flag and a weapon, a test and a declaration.

I dont like this tendency to use people, it seems reductive and dehumanising. At the same time, it can be a useful shorthand for showing whether someone is an extremist on 'gender' issues.

A lot of it has fuck all to do with her and what she says or does.

I have a well educated friend (male) tell me she's transphobic because they have vulnerable trans mates (female) and that's what they say. No further details.

I am yet to have it out with him. I will.

One of his friends is already in a wheelchair. She's in her late twenties at most. And very obviously female.

Clusterfuckular · Today 08:09

For example, Harry Potter merch has become a way to silently resist genderism. And for a lot of people, the majority, who just like the books/films/games, a shrug and ignore the furore.

TRAs tried to turn it into a witch burning exercise, and cancel Harry Potter. It's been quite amusing to see how effective that's been for them.

Witch doesnt burn, lads.

If anyone is MRA its the sex realist movement in their snuggling upto & enabling the far right's exploitation of this issue as a cudgel to gain power. SRM has proven by their allegiance to the far right that they would happily burn down everything feminists have worked for all for their sick demented obsession with a group that barely exists.

So don't you dare act as if you're an authority on leftist purity given you clearly don't even know that being anti-transgender opposes the core principles of the civil rights movement in seeking to deny equal protection, bodily autonomy and freedom from discrimination to a marginalised groups.

You’re forgetting that people who claim to be the opposite sex DO have equal rights to all other people. What they don’t have is the right to force others to see them as the opposite sex. But then again, nobody has the right to force people to see things from someone else’s point of view.
Regarding bodily autonomy, people can do whatever they want to their own bodies - tattoos, piercings, chemical changes, amputations etc, but none of those things should be state funded. We don’t pay for people with anorexia to have their stomachs stapled FFS!
Discrimination as a concept is threaded throughout civilised society - adults are discriminated against by not being allowed to take part in sports designated for children, people without disabilities are discriminated against receiving a Blue Badge for parking, children are discriminated against from not being allowed to have tattoos, but cigarettes or alcohol.
What TRAs want is to not be discriminated against in terms of a person of one sex being prevented from accessing things designated solely for the opposite sex. In reality, that is absolutely the type of discrimination that SHOULD be happening.

I'm genuinely interested. Show me something transphobic she's said. I've looked at her words, and I've found nothing. So when people say, "Just read her words and you'll see," what else can I say but, "You're wrong" ?

No thanks.

I just wonder why the question has been asked when none of the pro JKR/GC posters aren't interested in ANY answers that don't agree with their world view?

Why ask? It's pointless.

Because none of them make any sense.

It’s either overblown opinion (“She’s made comments I don’t like” and somehow upsetting a trans person is “transphobia”) or just plain bullshit (cf claims about eugenics).

Come up with an “answer” that’s calmly substantiated and properly cited and we might listen.

Yep. Still can't see what that proves though.

Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?
NotBadConsidering · Today 08:21

It’s mainly pointless because being labeled “transphobic!” Is a laughably empty criticism. It’s like being called a blasphemer or having other fundamentalists tell you “you’re a sinner and you’re going to Hell!”

It’s been rendered meaningless, now it just means you’re a non-believer, not that you hate anyone.

People who scream “transphobe!” at others still seem to believe we care about being labeled as such. Nobody cares 🤣

Good job I wasn’t holding my breath.

The question was asked because everyone knows she is not transphobic. Even the people accusing her of it. OP wants to know why people would incorrectly call her transphobic. We are yet to see an actual reason for it other than lies and hyperbole which the majority posters on here will always respond to. Not shout down, just respond. So, please show actual proof of her transphobia instead of hoping the accusations will stick.

Because she supports KJK who has said some of the most repugnant garbage I’ve ever seen.

I do find KJK unpleasant. She isn't a feminist and is not actually in favour of women's liberation. However I haven't seen anything anything from JKR saying that she fully supports KJK's views - have you? Obviously there will be some overlap to their statements as both believe, quite rightly, that men can't be women and I expect they have shared a platform but has JKR actually endorsed KJK's more extreme views? I would be interested to see evidence of this claim if it exists.

I’ve got War and Peace, the entirety of A Dance To The Music Of Time and - obviously - all seven Harry Potter novels.

Do you think that will fill the time sufficiently or shall I add the works of Shakespeare?
