Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

Because they believe everything they see on social media 🤷

aliasfrog · Yesterday 20:35

She wrote an essay saying women should have single sex spaces, and she calls trans identifying men men. And she hasn't backed down when under fire.

BirdLandedonmyHead · Yesterday 20:35

The TR Bullies have pronounced it to be The Truth.

CassOle · Yesterday 20:40

Is that prize still available (for finding an actual transphobic quote by JKR)?

Pingponghavoc · Yesterday 20:41

Seems creating space for women who have been sexually assaulted is transphobic. She was caught thinking about women for while and not about the men.

WizardCat · Yesterday 20:41

According to a friend JK assumes all trans people are bad people. Didn't have any evidence for it though

There’s absolutely no back up to their views though. It’s totally illogical. I thought the essay she wrote was quite generous. ‘Dress how never you want to dress’ etc (personally I think the way trans women parody women by dressing as them is quite offensive). It’s just a scientific fact that people can’t change sex. Sad but true. Is pointing out facts that they don’t want to hear so terrible?

Because they don't bother to read what she actually said. They rely on 'everybody knows she said this blah blah' when she said no such thing.

A lie is half way round the world before the truth has got its boots on.

It might be more to do with her opening Beryl’s place, a refuge for female victims of rape that don’t want to bump into any males no matter how they dress.

Is that offensive? Is it offensive to take the views of traumatised women into account? Seriously?

Because some people don’t read what she wrote for themselves from the original source and make a decision without the influence of others seeking to discredit her for their own prejudiced reasons?

Or maybe too, some people don’t ever look further and decide that they will support the people that are, upon deeper review, her abusers or abusers of other female people rather than understanding that she is reacting to her abusers or abusers of other female people (collectively or individually).

It seems to be deeply offensive to TRA's that JKR opened the only rape crisis services to offer single sex services in the Edinburgh and Lothians.

The other rape crisis services in Edinburgh and the Lothians offer only mixed sex services. In the case of ERCC, after an excoriating employment tribunal, they were found by an Independent Review to 'have failed rape survivors'. These services are funded by the taxpayer. JKR's service doesn't take away any funding from those services as she funds it entirely. But the idea that rape survivors should merely have the option to access single sex spaces is just terrible for men who believe that women should not be allowed their legal right to single sex service services as per the EQA 2010 and seem almost gleeful that women are harmed.

The independent review if anyone is interested -

Because she supports KJK who has said some of the most repugnant garbage I’ve ever seen.

Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?
Seethlaw · Yesterday 21:07

I suspect the vast majority of people are just like I used to be: they don't read what JKR says, only what other people say she said. I used to be heartbroken that she'd written a terrible transphobic essay. Then I read it for myself and discovered I'd been outright lied to by the TRAs.

Theeyeballsinthesky · Yesterday 21:07

Goodness how long do we give it until the monitors send out the batshit signal and the Redditor's appear with their usual fact free frothing (I do like to get a frothing in early) about JKR?

Well that does not prove what you claim it to prove give us a tweet where she supports what PP says that is actually transphobic

Do you have proof that JK. Rowling supports that particular statement?

It is perfectly possible to agree with some things that a person says, and disagree with other things that they say.

Not just possible, but usual. I don't think there's anyone out there about whom I would say, "Oh yeah, I agree with everything they might ever say or have said."

They lie about changing sex, you really expect any of them to be decent people?

So that other person is transphobic so she is too? Is that the biggest argument? Is there nothing else?

Honestly it’s a huge mystery. I look at her X feed and I have no idea.

Helleofabore · Yesterday 21:26

So, like an adult who isn’t prone to tribalist politics, she can agree with some things others say while disagreeing with other things someone says.

Has she ‘supported’ KJK or has she said it is unacceptable to abuse or violently attack a women and girl’s rights campaigner ?

The difference is important.
