Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

Backwardsbinn · Yesterday 20:33

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

Some of her posts are unkind and make fun of the worst examples of trans delusion and I don’t like that but I don’t judge her because she’s been on the receiving end of a torrent of hate and disgusting insults and threats for years now. I do think the tra insistence that she and others who question the concept of transgenderism want all trans people dead is more harmful than anything she’s actually said.

I’ve got War and Peace, the entirety of A Dance To The Music Of Time and - obviously - all seven Harry Potter novels.

Do you think that will fill the time sufficiently or shall I add the works of Shakespeare?

absolutely this. Adult TRA are happily indeed enthusiastically telling vulnerable young ppl that anyone who doesn't agree with them wants them to die and their parents that if they don't go along with everything their child says, they will kill themselves

yet somehow ppl who believe sex is real and sometimes matters a great deal eg in health care, in providing support to survivors of sexual abuse, in sport are the bad guys

Good job I wasn’t holding my breath.

The question was asked because everyone knows she is not transphobic. Even the people accusing her of it. OP wants to know why people would incorrectly call her transphobic. We are yet to see an actual reason for it other than lies and hyperbole which the majority posters on here will always respond to. Not shout down, just respond. So, please show actual proof of her transphobia instead of hoping the accusations will stick.

If everyone knows she's not transphobic then there is no need to ask the question.

OP and others want to know why certain people are lying about her. Are you able to answer the question?

We are no more lying than you are. It's a difference of opinion. No more, no less.

This obsession with it and other issues related to is weird.

You've made a good start but I'd add in the full works of Shakespeare, the entire Charles Dickens collection and a remake of the Bayeux Tapestry, just in case you get bored of reading.

It’s not a difference of opinion. We can say that we do not believe her to be transphobic because she has never posted anything transphobic and her other posts and actions support her stance on retaining female single sex provision. You can not provide any evidence of her transphobia and won’t even tell us what it is you actually disagree with her about her support for female single sex provision. So again, please provide evidence of her transphobia or you are proving our point that her detractors only have lies and hyperbole.

What is the black mould thing all about then? Such a hateful idea.

Isn't it called the mandala effect. A thing that is widely believed with no factual basis whatsoever.

I agree. Although I understand her fuck it attitude, nutpicking benefits Elon Musk more than anyone else.

I also think there is a sense of betrayal because there is a huge overlap between people who were heavily invested in the Harry Potter universe and are vulnerable and neurodivergent and people who identify as being in the queer community.

They wanted her to be their mum, but she is acutely aware of the toxicity of fan culture (you just have to read her books) and declined the role.

Gengha · Today 09:08

It might be more to do with her opening Beryl’s place, a refuge for female victims of rape that don’t want to bump into any males no matter how they dress.

That’s not transphobic though?

Gengha · Today 09:10

Even if she is “transphobic” I don’t really care. I’ve been called “transphobic” as well. I don’t really care about that either. The opinions of people who parrot on about “transphobia” mean nothing to me

Apollo441 · Today 09:16

The context of this discussion is JKR's transphobia. And she's transphobic because she is using harmful stereotypes that effectively smear & demean an entire group….you know the thing that you're supposed to be against.

It isn't stereotypes you buffoon. Males are responsible for 99% of sexual crimes against women. This is the reason they are excluded from spaces where women are vulnerable. Transwomen are male and are excluded from single sex spaces for exactly the same reason that other men are excluded and that reason isn't 'harmful stereotypes'. Transwonen are not a sacred caste. They are male with atypical male behaviour. Feel free to post evidence that proves otherwise..... (you won't).

BackToLurk · Today 09:17

She was labelled transphobic, like many of us, for not believing TWAW. For a long time accusations of transphobia weren’t questioned. Now they are. So TRAs have to go back and try and find transphobia.

Every now and again a TRA will declare “her problem is she hates men”. Thus giving the game away.

Her entire Twitter account is transphobia.

All of it. Calling trans women fetishists, claiming trans guys are all autistic mentally ill survivors (!!), taking the piss out of individual trans and nb people, pushing the 'trans away the gay' lie...only someone who is themselves transphobic refuses to see it.

She's also made some absolutely hateful, repulsive comments about asexual people.

Dismissing her behaviour as 'standing up for women' is deeply disingenuous. That doesn't explain why she reposted a thoughtful article about how a nb parent defined themself with nasty, disparaging comments, to give just one example.

All from a woman who employed a domestic abuser, refused to fire him, defended her decision and ignored the DV groups who asked her to reconsider.

Her attitude towards trans people is extremely consequential when they are suffering very real violence - particularly in schools.

She has reposted Islamophobic content, replied approvingly to obvious fascists and denied that trans people were killed during the Holocaust. She hasn't distanced herself from KJK or any other Islamophobic, racist anti-trans people.

She even defended that hateful, racist danger Linehan.

I'm aware asking 'what JKR has said that's so transphobic' is rarely done sincerely, but just in case: read her own words. Read, if you can stomach it, what she and her cronies (inc that worrying bloke who runs a trans woman parody account) say about trans women's bodies.

Read what she said about Imane Khelif, a young Muslim woman in whose country it's illegal to be trans. Look at how she publicly treated her, based upon little more than rumours and Khelif's appearance.

Khelif is a massive inspiration and fantastic female role-model for young girls in Algeria. They love her for that.

JKR's targeting of a brown Muslim woman has been noted by people normally uninterested in her anti-trans comments. She isn't a doctor, or on the Olympic Committee. It's horrific what she's put that young woman (who's lost plenty of matches to other cis women btw) and others through.

The evidence is all there. Bigots don't get to say they aren't bigots, that's for their targets to name.

[she] denied that trans people were killed during the Holocaust

I'm particularly interested in this bit @TransParentlyAnnoyed
What are you basing this on?
Not the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft again is it? I know that's a particular fave among TRAs.

I some what agree. She is a very clever writer so can deliver words that hit hard but she has been subject to such abuse that I'm surprised she is so restrained.

She is also the main focus for TRAs whereas Ricky Gervais is never targeted. It's very obvious that she's a target because she is a woman.

Ah, the "transgender people were killed in the Holocaust, as well as some Jews" line.

Did you know that the top Nazi doctor was one of the pioneers of gender reassignment surgery? How does it make you feel that sex change surgery is heavily linked with the Nazis?

JustEatThePizza · Today 09:30

JKR is targeted because she's basically a mother figure to many of these outraged teenagers and young adults.

Yesterday they announced Hogwards Legacy 2 video game. I saw online activists losing their minds over it, with accusations that it will lead to murder of trans people etc. Don't they learn that they tried this with the first game and no one listened.

ninesparrows · Today 09:32

Gervais certainly is targeted - he is beyond the pale for TRA's - but his stand- up routines are so efficient at puncturing the illusion eg:

"Her penis, you bigot!"

SidewaysOtter · Today 09:34

DialSquare · Today 08:43

Don’t forget Strike.

If JKR would stop transphobiaing all over X (in between the eugenics and other unspecified crimes against humanity, honestly I don't know how she finds the time), she could have written the ninth by now.

Honestly, is there no end to the suffering she causes?!
